  1. The stern of that kayak is going to make it somewhat challenging to mount a motor, not impossible but you'll have to reinforce it somehow, depending on the motor choice. I wouldn't sell it and get a kayak made for a motor though becuase if you have to paddle a kayak that is made for a motor, you will regret it. I mcuh prefer a good paddling kayak that I can add a motor instead, especially if you do any motor up and float back river type trips. I will second the starboard recommendation above as well. I was looking for a nose mounting pl;ate for my ATAK120 and nobody had them in stock so i bought some 1/2" starboard and made my own and it worked out just fine. I have also seen guys use tracks mounted across the rear of a kayak to mount torqeedo style motors as well.
  2. lots of good kayak trailers out there. My dad has an autopilot 13' version and he has a loadrite kayak one that does the job nicely and he is able to launch just like a boat. I personally have an old sportsrig model which is sort of like the yakima roof rack on wheels and it does me well. Doesn't allow for launching directly but I am ok with that as I can tow it with my Mini Cooper Countryman.
  3. That makes more sense then and you did try and get them to just pick out some stuff and they wanted it all which I cannot blame them as it sounds like it was solid gear. Maybe I am just not as nice as everyone else lol
  4. Should've charged more given they pulled out the $500 easy. Unless you are sponsoring them and just because they are friends, doesn't mean you should get screwed out of what you spent on the items even if they were "extra"
  5. Yeah they pretty much suck. I get chewed up going into my backyard and they go for the spots right about my socks all the time. More of an annoyance. My daughter is very allergic to them so we have to be careful and make sure she doesn't get any becuase when she does, they blister and almost look like a boil. It isn't as bad as it was when she was younger and we got some prescription stuff from the doc that helps keep that at bay when we do see a bite. as far as repellent goes, https://www.rei.com/product/785883/sawyer-picaridin-insect-repellent-3-oz I am not a fan of deet for a lot of reasons and this stuff works as well in all the stuations I have been in and had to use it.
  6. I have owned a 71 wagoneer which was still AMC at the time, 95 wrangler, 98 wrangler, 2012 wrangler and my wife had a 04 grand cherokee and none had any major issues mechanically that was out of the norm so I guess I got lucky on mine. The old wagoneer had some issues with oil consumption but after reading the owners manual it said adding a quart of oil per gass fill up was normal lol Yeah I agree that replacing a turbo is not hard technically except on this vehicle as the space was the major concern which definitely increased the level of difficulty.
  7. Sounds suspension like but you never know. the sqeaking when turning the wheel could be a bunch of things unfortunately but the first thing I would check is power steering fluid and if all the steering stuff is lubricated like it should be. I am no mechanic and I never stated at a Holiday Inn express so take this advice for what you paid for it lol
  8. Yeah I actually like my countryman. I rented a car while I worked on this one and it was a new Mazda CX5 and I was not impressed at all. It had more creature comforts than mine but the performance and handling was severley lacking.
  9. Do any vehicles have drums any more? I do agree though they are the worst. I did them once on my 95 wrangler and it was not a pleasant experience.
  10. Brakes are one of those things that when you do them once you are like why do I ever pay anyone to do these.
  11. mine is a 2012 so there are some computer things but not like the newer vehicles. I did get a cheap code reader and it works for the codes and even resetting them so that is kind of nice to have. Sure, what are you trying to get done? Bring the kayak and we can go fishing I haven't done anything that drastic and probably wouldn't as I don't have an extra vehicle to use while that one would sit and no garage to work in. I'd like to get to that level at some point but I'd need to build an outbuilding first
  12. Gotcha. I guess that is where it pays to really know your kayak's initial and secondary stability oh and screw that BooneDox cart deal too lol
  13. We get it, you aren't capable of kayak fishing for whatever reason. I have been kayak fishing for a couple decades now and I haven't flipped one in probably 15 years and that was in current in a new kayak. Modern fishing style kayaks are so stable that you usually fall out before you flip them which is why I asked.
  14. I figure this one lasted 130k miles and i don't think i will have the car another 130k. I do have an issue paying someone to do something I can do though and that goes for all kinds of stuff.
  15. I am more wondering the situation as to why he flipped his kayak.
  16. I have always worked on my vehicles which primarily have been Jeeps. Easy to work on with lots of space and tons of aftermarket parts out there. Last Jeep I had I had to get rid of to make some money numbers work for a house we were buying based o nteh payment even though I was paying double the payment each month....another story for another thread. Anyways so I end up getting a 2012 mini cooper countryman ALL4S about 6 years ago which is surprisingly roomy and all around a solid driving car as it should be since it is pretty much a BMW. Abolut 15k in to me owning it, it needed a thermostat cover replaced. Not a big deal on every car i have worked one well that changed with this one...looked like an artificial heart and i needed the hands of a child to work in the engine compartment. I got it done and vowed to never do work on it myself again. Fast forward to having 125k miles on the clock and i notice a loss of power at highway speeds and a small oil drip up front. There was also a very strange occurrence of oil light coming on at higher RPM and not lower....strange and opposite of what I knew so I started researching and called a few shops that specialize in Mini vehicles. They all said it would 99% most likely be the turbo and I got quotes in the 3-4k range....well my vow to not work on it again was broken as I picked up the pars for about 1500 and fixed and did some other routine maintenance like coil packs plugs air filter oil change etc... It was one of the most difficult things I ever did on a vehicle and not because of the complexity but because of the lack of space. Took me roughly 10 hours or so and all was good until I started it and have a major exhaust leak. Then I remembered a plate that I put in the wrong spot....so I had the pleasure of basically doing about 90% of it again but this time took about 4 hours as i knew how to contort my body to access bolts. Car is running great now and the power loss was gradual so it wasn't as noticeable. One thing I will say is that them building the car is they used similar sized bolts with 10mm being the most common. I don't think, other than the O2 sensors I needed anything but a 10,11,12,13mm socket so that was nice. No weird oil leak or check engine light now either so it was well worth the time spent and I will NEVER do it again........
  17. I use spinning for: weightless soft plastics light jigs (river mainly) Shakey/Ned rigs jerkbaits Casting is pretty much anything else.
  18. smallies are funny like that because some of my best days have been brutally hot and mid day with topwater. one of my most memorable days on a small flow near me was fishing a mini buzz bait from strike king i think and targeting shade lines near the shore. Cast to the bank and as soon as it hit that shade line they would hammer it. For the creek i was on I caught some big ones too.
  19. try fly fishing in the wind with heavy weighted streamers and you will at some point take a fly to the back of the head....don't ask me how I know
  20. That hook is a gimmick to me but some people like it. I have been using the Aqua Bound Manta Ray https://paddleva.com/products/aqua-bound-manta-ray-hybrid-2pc-kayak-paddle since i started kayak fishing and haven't seen the need to upgrade. First one I left at a ramp somewhere....second one I used for 5+ years of pretty heavy use and a lot of use on rivers pushing and pulling off rocks etc and that one broke and the last one i still have doesn't getr as much use except for positioning since I have a motor
  21. Just ordered some dredge brush jigs from Seibert last night and they are my preferred jig for all aroudn use. I do prefer football style for rocks but these work there as well.
  22. Bass care about 3 things, safety, food and spawning. Taking spawning out of hte equation fish need safety and food and if those places are in the middle then that is where they will be. If that is near the bank then that is where they will be. Just like when you are hungry you go to the kitchen and when yo aure tired you chill in bed or on the lazy boy, bass are no different. Also keep in mind safety isn't just about predators, it is about sustaining life so in heat of the summer shade and cooler oxygenated water helps a lot and on my local rivers that can be anywhere in the river.
  23. I wouldn't say scared but I cannot stand ticks. If I am fishing and have a bunch that end up on me I am leaving. I think it goes back to a time fishing a spot i wasn't planning to and pulled probably 50 of those suckers off me. I guess in all my years of doing crazy stuff I have seen and done a lot of things that prepared me and made me realize, it isn't that bad
  24. Other than frogs I am setting any time I feel the bait doing something it shouldn't be doing. That varies but it also comes with experience to know what your bait is doing as opposed to detecting strikes. We all love the solid thump of a good hit but that isn't always gonna happen and like has already been mentioned, hooksets are free.....
  25. yeah they usually do but I never mess with them on my kayak but I imagine once I get a boat i will think differently but who knows.
