  1. when using the power pro for the brushes, what glue do you use to hold it in place? I have a bunch of basically useless spools around that have 20-30 yards maybe and I thought about brushes with them but when I tried, it was all slipping out
  2. they aren't usually spun but rather reverse tied where you flare the tips at the tie in point up so they create the bulk for the next layer to help prop the materials. The head itself is usually spun though which creates the turbulence which helps to activate the materials behind it.
  3. 4/0 EWG weedless rigged on lakes with vegetation. On rivers I usually rig them backwards with the point in the slot that usually hold the hook shank and leave it pushed all the way through. 6'8" MXF spinning rod with either 20 or 30lb braid tied direct does the trick for me. When I made the switch to braid umpteen years ago for this technique, my hookup rate went up a whole lot.
  4. I have done retail, construction, call center rep, corporate america and now teach. Being kind in no way shape or form means being weak or quiet. Over the years I have learned how to say what I need to say the right way. Everyone makes mistakes including myself. I exend grace to all that I can and if someone screws up and owns it and tries to fix it, I am all for it. I have a rule at a restaurant that if the food is good and the service sucks I'll give it another shot and if the service still sucks I will go elswehere. One of the biggest fights me and the now wife ever got into was ironcially enough when we were going to restaurants trying to find a place that we would use for our wedding reception, only like 20 people. We got to a place around lunch time about an hour after they opened and the server we had was not in the best of moods. She wasn't rude per se, at least I didn't think so but you could tell she didn't want to be there. My now wife was pretty irritated by her and when I paid the bill I gave the waitress a pretty hefty tip. Well the wife was ticked and said she didn't deserve that tip etc....i told her look, she was having a bad day and this is probably the start of her shift so maybe a good tip will help snap her out of her funk and give the rest of the customers she serves a good experience. Who knows what actually happened but I know in a few months we will be celebrating our 8th wedding anniversary so she wasn't that mad I guess A snall act of kindness can go a long ways.
  5. There are some fish that live shallow year round and docks are not an exception to that. Winter fish like the abiulity to move up through the water column easily and a dock does just that.
  6. If this is family owned and the only place, why not just leave it there and lock it up after each use? Seems like that would be the easiest thing to do.
  7. Tied up a few shad flies and a couple for largemouth. Was going for the sexy shad color scheme using one of the ahrex swimbait hooks with a piece of body tubing to provide the flared body. The popper was jsut something i was playing with..used the same hook as the baitfish connected to a short shank to allow for the length needed for the popper head. Also got out last weekend and caught a couple but this guy was hungry....the fly was half his body length probably.
  8. my normal drive to fish is 45-90 minutes for a day. I have done a 4hour one way "day" trip more than once and it was always worth it. My general rule of thumb for a day trip is more time on the water than driving
  9. A matter of preference really. I have been kayak fishing for a long time. I have no issues standing and fly fishing from my kayak and have plenty of space. I can paddle comfortably in the 3.5-4mph range and have done so on many 10+ mile days. I have also been in some pretty rough water and did just fine, took a little longer but manageable. I motorized my kayak last year and it makes it even better. I can sit back and cruise at 4mph with zero effort and should my battery die, I can still paddle with no issues. If i lived on a pond or small lake, I'd probably have a bass hunter on the shore for ease of use but for the variety of water I can take my kayak, i'll take that over a bass hunter style of boat.
  10. I'll buy wherever but usually online. I prefer to cast fly rods before purchasing but generally I know what I want and how specific manufacturers rods perform based on previous experience. If it doesn't work out, I pay a few bucks to ship it back, not really a big deal in the long run to save me a bunch of time.
  11. I hear ya. I have switched to primarily unweighted flies and sinking lines if possible but these really get down in the heavy current fast when I am wading and want to only take one rod. This is my first year using them and only been out once and I didn't have any issues casting them. Many people complain that they are rod breakers but at the same time, I haven't hit a fly on my rod in a long long time, probably because I learned to fly fish as a poor college student and only had a 4wt that I used for everything from mountain stream brookies to 20lb carp and everything in between. Now it is which 7 or 8wts I am I gonna take
  12. there are ton out there but my favorite is super simple. Cross cut rabbit, rabbit tail and sculpin helmet. Takes longer to get out hte materials than the tie itself really. Which is a good thing becasue I seem to lose them all the time.
  13. Economy is good and people who want to work, are. It will have to get a lot worse before it really impacts fishing. We still aren't near the prices back in 2008
  14. And i promise you that has zero relevance to my comment. I'd also make a guess that not many elite fisherman refer to their fishing apparati as poles either. Your skill, ability and techniques used will dictate what gear you need if you want to get to elite level in anything. Your gear will never make you elite in anything. yup but if you don't know how to use that technique and when to use it, you can have 50 punching combos of the highest level and it won't even matter. Elite guys can catch fish, period. The gear is important, sure but it isn't as important as we think it is.
  15. The mindset of what is needed to be an elite angler and have it relate to gear is what will make someone never reach elite angler status
  16. and those golfers still pay for me to go fishing by their taxes too. I guess I don't see an issue of paying a couple hundred a year on fishing related expenses/licenses etc.....It is probably more of a preference though and i recognize that. I would be more than willing to help out a study on a potentially endangered species.
  17. I guess I don't see it as dinged in any way. I am paying to use a resource that is not maintained by me. I mean i know casual golfers that spend way more than I do as a fisherman on all the fees, licenses etc...and i get fishing licenses in at least 3 states each year, and this is on just a couple rounds of golf.
  18. I know this is tongue in cheek, I hope but the guy seems like an ******* to me.
  19. Lithium has dropped in price considerably since last year when I bought my batteries for my motor on my kayak. I needed a 24v so i got 2 12v wired in series 30ah and paid right around 750 i think. Same company and same batteries i can get for a little over $500. Same company has a 12V 100ah for $700 now. Weight is a huge consideration on a kayak which is why i sprung for the lithium. Less weight requires the motor to not work as hard and extends life. If you are wanting to know how long a motor will last, motors should have specs of amp draw. Alkl you need is ah/amp draw and that will give you a good estimate of time at that amp draw. For me, I'd err on the side of a bigger battery, especially if you have to paddle it if it burns out. I have a Newport Vessels nk180s and with my 30ah i can go 2+ hours at full tilt which I never do. You also have to consider that, at least for my motor, going down in thrust has a minimal impact to MPH but battery life is extended exponentially. Totally worth crunching a few numbers and being realistic with your use and needs.
  20. I hope all this mess is done by the time I save up enough money to go Taimen fishing in Russia one day....
  21. The BMS in any good lithium battery will not allow it to charge below freezing temps. For my lithium batteries when I asked the manufacturer about cold weather use he said that was not a concern, only charging and the BMS would not allow it to damage itself. Right now I checked mine on the app and they are at 57 degrees in my garage
  22. nope, they are made in China as well. I don't think any are made in the US. Just like you would any item that is made overseas and sold by a US company, you deal with the company who is their distributor.
  23. I can count on one hand the number I have seen that didn't hit a bait thrown their way. When I target them specifically, I am sight fishing and they seem to be mean scoundrels and hit stuff just to hit it
  24. Everything in moderation. I love some fast food and am a sucker for burgers and even Taco Bell. Some days I want that calorie dense food for whatever reason. When I worked construction a triple large fries frosty and soda from Wendy's was the norm. That was pretty much my pre game meal for all my years of playing basketball through college too. never slowed me down and I even tried more healthy stuff too but the caloric intake was never enough for what I liked to do. Everyone's body is different. I rarely eat lunch now except maybe a protein bar and eat a big dinner to go with my smoothie in the morning. Seems to work for me.
