Strike King Red Eye Shad Lipless Crankbaits
Being that I only have 2 setups, I use 10-12 pound mono for pretty much everything (including lipless cranks). I've only used BPS Excel, Berkley Trilene, and Spiderwire. Of those 3 Spiderwire seems to be the most sensitive and its really hard to break. As for knots I always use the improved clinch knot. I know how to tie a palomar but for me, I feel like the improved clinch is easier.

Backlashing With Lighter Weight Lures
It's rated for 1/4 oz to 5/8 oz lures but I seem like I'm backlashing a lot with the 1/4 oz ones. I don't see why they would sell a combo with a reel that couldn't be compatible with the rod. Maybe I'll try some lighter line. The combo is rated for 8-15 pound line and I'm using 12lb mono. Like I said, the heavier lures I'm fine with. It's the lower end of the rating spectrum I'm having trouble with. I fish from the bank and I'd like to limit what I have to carry as much as possible and thus have to try and make this rod work for as many techniques as I can. I'd hate for the step to correct the problem be to just not fish 1/4 oz lures. I may try some lighter line but I was hoping that maybe someone could give me some insight as to what they might do in this situation for on-the-water adjustments like less spool tension/more brake or vice versa or something along those lines.

Backlashing With Lighter Weight Lures
Well I'm getting better with my baitcaster. I can throw heavier lures like my 1/2 oz. Red Eye Shad or my 7/16 oz. Skitterwalk pretty much without issue but I'm still having a little trouble backlashing with lighter lures like 1/4 oz. spinnerbaits and lighter weight cranks. I've watched glenn's video on setting up a baitcaster and I always re-set it when I tie on a new lure. I'm using the Abu Garcia Black Max Combo and its rated for 1/4 oz. up to I think 5/8 oz. lures. And before you suggest a different rod or reel, I can't afford one right now. Is there something I can adjust here? Spool tension? Magnetic brake? What to do, what to do...?

Bank Or Boat
I'm stuck on the bank as well with no boat in the foreseeable future. Like others have said, a boat will open up more water/spots for you to fish but it is what it is. You just gotta make the best of what you got (or buy a boat, kayak, float tube, etc.). Pretty much all of the lakes that I fish are only 6-8 feet at their deepest point and even on my longest casts, I'd be surprised if I were hitting the deep water. The majority of my fishing is done shallow. Probably no more than 4-5 feet. Fish every piece of cover you can see. Run weightless soft plastics across the tops of weed mats and lily pads, toss jigs and t-rigs to stumps, logs, and brush piles, run a squarebill crank or spook along the edge of weed lines, or fan-cast a spinnerbait or lipless crank. If you wear sunglasses with polarized lenses it will take some of the glare off the water and you can see what's on the bottom a little better. If you can make out an area that looks a little deeper, like maybe it drops off, cast past it. Sometimes the fish will be right there by the drop-off. Same thing with points. Fish any points you see. Fish both sides of it. I went out with a guy I work with this morning and watched him pull 2 fish off this point about 5 minutes apart and the water wasn't more than 2 feet deep. Also when I fish from the shore, I always fish the bait all the way back to me (as opposed to just reeling in real quick when your almost to the shore). There's been quite a few times when I've had a fish grab my bait right at the shore line. One fish followed my spinnerbait all the way in and hit in 6 inches of water just before I lifted it out. Another thing is that if you can see the fish, the fish can see you. Try not to wear brightly colored clothing and blend into the environment as best you can and walk as quietly as you can so you don't spook any fish that are right there near the bank. Hope this helps.

Black Square Bills
It does look sort of similar to a black Bandit 200 series that I have. Never fished a black squarebill before though. Give it a shot. If you catch some nice fish with it, you can thank the guy in the bass boat next time you see him.

Got Permission To Fish A Private Lake
Well, I guess you'd call it private. You need written permission from the owner to fish it but to get permission, all you have to do is ask. Anyway, the wife and I just got back from our first trip there. She caught like 7 or 8 with her T-rigged lizard mostly around lily pads and I caught 2 on a Rapala Skitterwalk in deeper water and 1 on a Wally World spinnerbait by a downed tree and we both missed maybe 2 or 3. I borrowed one of her lizards but for some reason it wasn't working for me. I couldn't buy a bite with it. The fish weren't all that big. Average was maybe around 12 inches with a few that were a little better but it was the best numbers day we've had. We even doubled up at one point. I got mine in and shouted down the bank to get her attention and held my fish up and then she held hers up right back at me. We were pretty far apart so we both ran towards each other and she held em both up for the picture (mine is the one in her left hand). I'm excited to go back again and see if the lake is always on like that.

What Technique Are You Least Confident In? Which Do You Want To Learn?
Funny you should mention that, I've been thinking the same thing the last couple days.

Zoom 4 Inch Lizard
My wife and I like fishing lizards. We usually T-rig them with a 3/16oz weight or sometimes weightless. Cast them to cover and swim/hop them slowly back to you. Or if you have any lily pads or something similar, you can use them like a topwater. Skim the lizard across the top of the pads. Sometimes they'll come up through them and slam it. You can also pause it near the edge of a pad and then let it slide off and sink a bit. A bass may be sitting right there just waiting for the something to fall in. Caught this one in a shallow/narrow creek. Tossed the lizard up under an overhanging tree and he hit it on the fall. The wife caught this one yesterday morning. Came up through the pads and hit it on top.
