Drop Shot Question (Noob)
My leader goes from the first eye at the tip to a little past the last. I tie the hook and then use a 7" leader from there to the weight.

What's My Rod Good For?
Medium action rods are a very good general rod for fishing. You can use it for shake head, drop shot, weightless senko, swimming a grub, light Texas rigged worms, smaller jigs etc.

Best Soft Plastic Baits For Northern Fishermen
Not for nothing but you may be thinking about this the wrong way. I believe any/all techniques can work no matter where you are. A lot is dependant on how you use them. Soft plastics like senkos, finesse worms, dream shots, roboworms, craws etc. are technique specific and not region specific. I am fortunate to travel a lot for work. That means I get to sneak a line in a ton of states. My "go-to's" have worked everywhere. Those include finesse swimbaits, finesse worms, senkos, and spinnerbaits. good luck.

Energy Drinks.
On fishing mornings I prefer drinking the Muscle Monster. Non carbonated shake with protein, just a touch of caffeine and it fills me up for most of the morning.

Looking To Buy A Life Jacket...
I have used the BassPro/onyx auto/manual PFD for 3 years now. At the end of the season it was due for a new rearming kit so I discharged it. Works great!!! If you watch your local BPS you can get these well under $100. They normally retail around $120.

How Do You Gain Confidence In What Color To Throw?
There is nothing like time on the water to learn and gain confidence. IMO they are NOT one and the same ... Learning - Take the time on the water with a particular lure and focus your efforts on what you are doing. You many not catch fish initially but you are learning how to work that bait. Maybe it feels different as you vary the retrieve. Maybe at a certain rod position you feel bottom more ... whatever it is you are learning how to work the bait. Confidence - If you are paying attention and get around fish you will eventually catch something. If you then repeat what you did and catch more confidence will eventually begin to build. What you did that day/time/place worked. The next time out it might be a different variation but when you catch again the cycle of confidence begins. Colors is only a portion of the equation and can make a difference at times. Presentation is more important normally. Be creative, be persistent and have fun. Good luck

Baitcaster Or Spinning Rod
Learning a baitcaster is a personal preference. I have a friend who only fishes spinning gear and he does just fine. If you do choose a baitcaster then I would recommend a 7' M with a reel which is a 6x:1 ratio. Good overall combo to start. FWIW I began with the Abu Silver Max combo. 3 years and 8 more baitcasters later and I still use that combo today. Good luck.
