  1. Thanks for the advice. They are awfully pretty, I hope they will catch fish as good as they catch fishermen.
  2. The Sebile swimbaits I ordered came today and the hooks on the 5-3/4" Magic Swimmer are tremendous. Has anybody tried putting smaller hooks on this bait? It is the fast sinking model and I know if I put a smaller hook it will sink slower, but they just look oversized for the bait.
  3. If they will hit a fluke, I'll bet they will hit a senko too. If I get out Saturday morning I will give it a try.
  4. Re: Suspended Smallies Reply #13 - Feb 27th, 2009, 1:14pm I do this rather regularly with very decent results. I use a slip bobber with a wacky rigged Senko. Dyn-O-mite! (Posted by Crestliner 2008). I copied the above from the smallmouth forum. Has anyone had success with this techniqe on spotted bass?
  5. It's been 8 months since we saw one .
  6. I like the idea of carrying a spare hub with the bearings already in it. Much easier than changing bearings on the road.
  7. Welcome to the forum. We will be fishing Kentucky Lake April 5-11. Come join us. See the 2009 road trip message for details.
  8. From one Georgia Boy to another, Welcome. You will like it here.
  9. Weddings during deer season or spring fishing season. People should have the decency to get married when it's either too cold or too hot to hunt or fish. Inviting a man to a baby shower. Even worse, inviting a man to a bridal shower. Just ain't proper.
  10. Anybody know what size hot air balloon it would take to lift a trolling motor battery :-?. Do you have a place to keep a burro? Maybe put some oar locks on the john boat and leave the battery at the house? Buy a canoe? If it weren't so far you could rig a cable and pulley system, but 200 yards is a long stretch. At my age I would be installing an underground wire to the lake and put my battery and charger in a heavy guage locked tool box chained to something substantial or fastened to a concrete slab. I assume you do have power at the house since you didn't call it a cabin. If you do that, I would ask an electrician what size wire to run so you didn't get too much voltage drop.
  11. I'm happy when I can catch anything over 6 lbs. In fact, I'm happy when I can just get time to go fishing .
  12. From my observations which are not infallible by any means: The spotted bass will take over the deeper, rocky parts of a lake and the largemouth will be forced to live in the shallower, upper ends of creeks and bays for the most part. Back when Lanier had no spots I remember catching largemouth on deep, main lake points and the water dog trollers used to catch them (big ones!) in deep water in the summer time so I know largemouth will use deep water if they can. Both species like wood cover, but spots can survive without it. When I started fishing Allatoona in the 90's I couldn't catch a fish because I was fishing like I did on Lanier for largemouth. Some kind souls told me to use small baits and light line, I did and started catching spotted bass. If there are spots in a lake, that is usually what you will catch on smaller baits because they are more aggressive than largemouth. My 2 cents for what it's worth.
  13. You got excellent advice above. Run it yourself, take it to a mechanic, and check the NADA guides for price. Boat prices should be way down. The money you spend on having a mechanic check it will be well spent. And don't forget - buying the boat is just the start; be prepared to keep spending on it.
  14. My lake has very few largemouth and I would rather fish for spots than catfish, bream, or crappie. A 12" spot can be a lot of fun on 4lb line and a light tackle rig and they are more aggressive and easier to catch in cold weather than largemouth. So, I am thankful to have Kentucky Spotted Bass to catch. By the way, that is a 4 lb 7 oz largemouth in my avatar that came from Marben Farms PFA on 4 lb line, so I will fish for largemouth if offered the opportunity. Triton Mike is a first class bass guide, and if you want to have a fun day and catch a lot of fish, book a trip with him this spring on Allatoona.
  15. It looks like it is unanimous against letting the fish hit the carpet. Why not start a BR online petition and let Glenn send it to B.A.S.S. once everyone has had a chance to sign up. They might not listen to us, but then again they might.
  16. Why? The author merely used Bain-Moore as a point of reference in summarizing VanDam's day. I would be interested to see how she feels about it. But right now I bet she is more interested in finding fish that will bite.
  17. I think the author of that piece will shortly find himself/herself in front of the boss's desk in an unpleasant situation :-[. I think ESPN will take a lot of flak for it too. Open mouth - insert foot.
  18. Oops, sorry about the rotated pics. I'll try and do better next time.
  19. I second that. I fished with Randall last year and caught one over 7 lbs. My son and I fished with him last week and a 6+ lb bass was caught by Randall trying to locate fish for us. If anyone can put you on a good bass it is Randall. His rates are very reasonable too. If it's just you and your dad, why don't you save motel bills and camp in one of our campsites in Georgia.
  20. Siphon it out and burn it in an old lawnmower after checking it for water.
  21. I just bought a couple of pairs of military style wool glove liners. A lot of guys around here are evidently using them, and I think I read where one pro recommends them as well. Haven't got to try them out yet myself but I have worn them for gloves in the past and they don't give a good grip on something slick. It will be interesting to see how they work.
  22. At 63(nearly 64) I consider myself fortunate to still be able to hunt, fish, and work. I would be miserable if I couldn't do all three. A bulging disk and resulting leg pain if I drive too long or lift too much has forced me to modify my lifestyle somewhat. I also don't hear real good out of my left ear even with a hearing aid. I still do pretty much everything I want, I just suffer for it afterwards. I fished 8 hours today with my son and I am feeling the effects of it right now. It will be worse in the morning. I have a good wife, good children who are married and either raising or starting families, wonderful grandchildren, and I can still hunt, fish, and work. I guess I am a blessed man.
  23. Does this mean I need to replace the 8 and 10 lb line on my reels with something heavier? I was planning to respool soon so it would be nice to know now.
  24. Wife and I have a private joke - "It's not a real date unless we end it by going to Walmart". I guess we are just getting old and boring. Anyway last Friday night found me at the fishing section in Walmart and it happened to me to. The baitmonkey was there waiting on me. When I die she can have a yard sale and sell my unused, unopened lures for a small fortune.
  25. Thanks for the info, Mike. I ordered the Hotspots map last night. It was $15 with shipping.
