Kim Bain-Moore

Recommended Posts

I took this quote from the Bassmaster site Classic coverage:

Kevin VanDam, the two-time Classic champ and the reigning Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year, took himself fully out of contention with a 4-4 four-fish stringer that left him in a dismal 45th place, one slot ahead of Kim Bain-Moore, the first woman to fish in a Classic.

Does this sound bigoted to anyone else? She's near the bottom, with some pretty good company. Why single her out?

...

44      Peter E Thliveros       3       6- 0       3       6- 0

45      Kevin VanDam      4      4- 4      4      4- 4

46      Kim Bain-Moore      2      3- 6      2      3- 6

I see what your sayin. She is in the bottom, but so are some of the best anglers there. I think by day 3 most of them wil be in the top 20. Something just went wrong today....but you never know...they could all miss the cut. I would like to see Kim make the cut though.

I feel like if she was 49th or 50th, that would be singling her out. Being that she is in the very next spot, it doesn't seem so. But then again she is the only girl. How could she not be?

I think the author of that piece will shortly find himself/herself in front of the boss's desk in an unpleasant situation :-[.  I think ESPN will take a lot of flak for it too.  Open mouth - insert foot.

Why?  The author merely used Bain-Moore as a point of reference in summarizing VanDam's day.

I would be interested to see how she feels about it.  But right now I bet she is more interested in finding fish that will bite.

I'm amazed at all the negativity I see on the web about her.

I've noticed too. I thought the Bassmaster comment was especially so. Doubt any heads will roll. Just unfortunate I think.

That's the point. Pointing out that VanDam is only one slot ahead of a woman is an obvious slight, whether the author recognized it or not. What if he'd said KVD was one slot behind Peter-T? Or only two slots ahead of Gary Klein? Or... Nope, he had to single out Bain-Moore to reference how "dismal" KVD's position was.

What are ya'll, the PC Police of bass fishing? :-/

They singled out Bain because she's one of the "poster people" of BASS right now.  KVD, Ike, Bain (and a few others) are who most fans are interested in.  It wasn't a slight, it was reporting what most folks who follow the sport want to know.

If the shoe was on the other foot, and the story was about Bain, and they mentioned that she was only one spot behind KVD, would that have been bigoted?

Don't be so sensitive. ;D

I agree that singling her out wasn't necessarily being bigoted and if that quote was the only negative statement I would say that people are being too sensitive. However, I thought that the commentating took a decidedly negative tone against her as well, featuring pros saying why she shouldn't be in the classic and others saying she really doesn't have a chance. Its everyones right to have an opinion but it seems hypocritical to, on one hand, say that her presence is a milestone, and on the other hand say that she has no chance and she really didn't qualify fairly.

Not too sensitive here. Not angry and no shed tears. But, I'm not insensitive either.

If they were talking about the top of the chart, that would work. But they're not, the coverage compared KVDs "dismal" showing to "a woman", not Byron Velvick, or Gary Klein, or Peter T, ... .

I think these two...out of 51 people are the most talked about in this whole event........as it stands....in the eyes of ESPN and its major sponsors has turned into the equivalent of a Super Bowl involving the Detroit Lions and the Cincinnnatti Bengals!! (no offense intended!)

Now the question is....Who will save this Classic?

I can see both sides of things like this. My sister-in-law likes to fish as much as ANYONE. And she does catch crap, and other times might over-react a little.

Bernie Shultz was way out of line IMO. Anyone hear his comments on this mornings coverage....What a big mouth idiot.

I intend to wright a few letters to his sponsors.

You would think if you were going to act like an elitist ***** you would be something other than also ran, getting cut early every tournament.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but my point is, if they are going to tout this as some massive milestone and such a positive thing for bass fishing, they need to be consistent about it instead of sending mixed messages.

I am a woman and I feel empowered seeing Kim Bain-Moore representing all the women anglers. I know she is the underdog but I think she can rise higher. KVD is one spot above her.

I thought that the Bassmaster Classic was a men's bass tournament know knowing that a women can compete in a tournament is empowering. I feel that this has become more a woman rights thing now then ever. All I want to see is more women fishing. Sometimes I feel that I am the only one.

Even if she does not make the cut knowing that women can make it in the Bassmater Classic gives me hope. This is going to be big but it will die down, like every moment in history. I am sorry for rambling on. I cannot wait to see the second day tonight.

I don't see how she didn't qualify fairly. Why is the qualification criteria not fair? Because she is fishing in a womens series?

If anything it's MORE than fair, as she has to prove to be consistently the best for an entire tournament trail.

And she did pretty good on day two.

Best of all better than the big mouth idiot Bernie Shultz.

The NOW gang is joining PETA at the weigh-in to protest the fact that Bain did not make the 25-man cut.

Oops. Did I say "man"?

Make that "person" like in 25-person cut.

Really guys, the statement is true so who cares?

It is wonderful that she made the Classic and it was fun seeing how she did against those Louisiana bass.

Remember, you are NOT fishing against the other contestants. You are fishing against the bass.

Guys will say things like I heard on the TV as the only reason she got into the Classic was that she was a female.

So????

She was the best fisherman (fisher-person?) on her trail and she deserves to not only to be in the Classic but be held in high esteem by us guys who will never make it to the classic.

It will be fun to watch other women fishing the Classic in future years.  ;)

Do these guys just want all the qualifiers come from the elite series?  I think it would not be nearly as interesting if they did it that way.  Did Boyd Duckett not deserve to be there in 2007 because he qualified through the opens?  Does Jami Fralick not belong there now because he qualified through the opens?  Why don't they just close the doors on the Federation while they are at it.  I say let them qualify however they qualify.  Men, Women, Pro, Amateur whatever it is they should be proud to fishing in the classic.  I know I would rather be fishing the classic than watching it on my couch  ;)

I think it was interesting with Kim in the classic. I do not (hope not) think bernie and others were upset with kim, but with b.a.s.s. for letting her in. (it's not her fault) Folks put up $100g's to fish the series last year, and women fished 4 (?), so does she deserve it? B.A.S.S. thinks so.  Maybe next year they will let me in because i won 4 of 5 tourneys i had against my fishin buddy last year!

It is not fair because every other way to qualify is open to everybody regardless of gender, but the WBT is only open to women. Men can't qualify through the WBT, but women can qualify through the opens, federation and elites.

[tt]Maybe there should be MBT. That way men can  compete the same way. Maybe we should have a Men's Bassmaster Classic and a Women's Bassmaster Classic. I think that will be fair. Is there an MBT? [/tt]
