  1. Could be pan fish hitting you. Could be short strikes. Dont really have to cross their eyes on hook set. Reel into it and lean on him. Only time I miss them alot is if I get lazy and just use the existing 3/0 ewg hook for wacky and not switch hooks.
  2. Gotta preface this by saying my son had a birthday yesterday. He comes home tmw (spends weekends with his mom) went by Walmart to get groceries and my trip to fishing section. Saw the lews hank parker spinning rods had yellow stickers on them- (I have no intrest in these rods, I have powells and OG tatulas, for mine) but they were marked down to 5.00 bucks (shakey head model).....from 45. So I bought 3 of them. The also had their Shakesphere Excurrison 6'8 MH marked down from 30 to 5.00. So i got 3 of those. My son has a daiwa xt casting and 2 spinning rods... now he has 6 more rods. On top of everything we already got him, hes gonna flip his lid. I'm bot into cheap gear, but I don't think a 10 year old is gonna care. If he can take care of these, we will see if he can get an upgrade next year. Moral of this story, check your Walmart for those yellow stickers Gonna have to buy him some reels now!
  3. Looks good with that blue reel. Glad you like it! I had a short trip this evening before this storm came in. I caught 2 on the Dx 744 with 3/8 PB&J color jig, switch to the tat with a black/blue 3/8 and caught 2 more and powered them outta some brush.(pitching to lay downs & cut brush that was dumped in the lake)
  4. Dude please stoppppp. ? I've been eyeballing them for a while.. I'm getting anxious on a stupid high level. They ha e good selection and even better if you look at the jdm models.... I'm getting ready to get my toes wet.soon.... and I'm liking to get a few at once.
  5. A dot of red nail polish? Or model airplane paint? Would a sharpie work...this is probably what I would do... I dont think it would hamper the weight or action.
  6. I realize upping the ante and going after bigger 6plus lb fish and trophy hunting are different, but am intrigued by the guys who are intentionally fish for BIG BASS or DD BASS. I imagine once my son moves gets old enough and goes off to school, I'll really try to focus on trying to fish for BIG BASS season long. I imagine the style of fishing is different when you look for 9lb lb plus bass. (I'm in nc, so 9-11 is huge here)
  7. ? brain fried reading all this, if you like a thicker blank, buy one. If you like a thinner blank, get one. In the beginning, I was kinda like the OP and confused by different thicknesses. I dont care for the bigger blanks.. but with new tech, they are super light. I'm less concerned with the blank now, and more concerned with how it feels to fish. Thsts hard to find out if you order it with out holding one first. Mike @Delaware Valley Tackle and @WRBexplained it well. I think the OP was comparing apples to oranges. Different blanks made in different ways.
  8. If it's a great deal, go for it, if you cant live with it, you should be able to sell it and get your most of your money back.
  9. I have went right back in there with a multitude of lures...normally whatever is at my feet. Trick worms, senkos, baby brush hogs, and lighter jigs have been successful. But the follow up cast for me is less than 1/3 of the time successful. Almost most of the time, I'll fire back with the same lure I started with first and do like scaleface said and try a slightly different retrieve first, then I'll grab the back up rod and see what happens. Yall dont sleep on the finesse jig as a follow up lure.. one of my favorites.
  10. Just keep playing with it. I dont have a tatula sv, but like those guys said loosen the tension a hair, start with higher end brakes, then come down on the brakes gradually. Once you get dialed in you should be looking at 45 yard plus or minus easily on 3/8 to 1/2 ounce. My numbers could be off... but once I get my reels dialed in I can get 45plus... I can be pretty darn accurate at 25 to 35 yards.
  11. Like BlueBasser, I have pitched to targets and then swam it back and got bit. Do I stop and switch to a swim jig...no. I like the ones labeled swim and grass jigs mainly because the split through vegetation and cover. I've done ALOT OF SWIMMING with an ARKY jig. (Probably my favorite style, it really is the Kordell Stewart of jigs, if can do alotnof things)
  12. I'm opposite of @Catt. Only 25% of the time for me. I've done wayyyyy better with greens and browns. That being said tho, I have alot of confidence in black and blue and it's always top of the box...
  13. I CRINGED a few years back paying 259.00 for a new Mustang Survival. They are expensive. I think onyx sells them cheaper. But, I cant skimp on safety.
  14. Thanks man...gonna check em out... I like baits like that right now
  15. Good side to side action? Good summer bait?
  16. Oh yeah. I was on a tw bite last week and had black frog on my endurance and a yellow one on the tat. It did fine in the milfoil, reeds and brush. Like I said before, daiwa rods seem like they are a touch heavier than their rating. I also use a heavy trig/light punch rig on it and do just fine. I like it with 1/2 oz tungsten and a beaver pitching to holes in the hydrilla. And if course I fish jigs on it. It doesnt load great with 1/4 but it loads good with 3/8 and a trailer. No problems with power in cover. @Catt has one he stated he uses it for jigs.
  17. Nah man, that tip action is fast! Wait and see... the flex is really high in it.
  18. Telescopic flipping sticks used to be popular. Haven't seen any in a while.
  19. I'm sure the ugly stick isn't the best option for rod, but I don't it is the reason for all those miss. Sometimes a bass can miss, sometimes we pull it away too fast. When I first got into bass fishing I caught hundreds of bass on top water off of an ugly stick spinning rod that I picked up from walmart. My inshore rods have a deep parabolic bend to and I've caught several on topwater.... May just be a timing issue. Who knows keep trying and when you feel like it maybe invest in a top water specific rod.
  20. I dont think its necessary to have the floro leader. But I dont think that has anything to do with it. Ugly stick is known to have a parabolic bend, so that will help you keep them pinned, however, I dont think it's amazing at the hook set. You are just gonna have to keep throwing them and watch your timing and see if a stronger hookset would help
  21. It could be your timing, if you are missing them on the strike. Next question is what line are you using? If you had one come off after the hook set, I'd like to know what type of rod you are using.. Never mind I see it now.
