Slow day on the pond
I typically go 4/0 on senko... but that's personal preference... my 10 year rigs his with a 3/0 all them and doesnt have.much trouble if he detects the bite on time and doesnt get so excited that he forgets to set the hook.

Personally, your choices would be one of the three circles. The one in the middle, 843c MBR would probably the most universal of choices. But all three are sick rods I wish someone was helping my girlfriend pick me out a GLX. I agree roger.. send me the glx flipping stick... but since we dont know...why not one of the most versatile rods out there...almost all of us have a 7mh..

What rod and reel is this?
@flipflops please dont quote me, but you are looking for 1/4 to 1oz ... and all rods are different... I would generally look for a medium heavy rod. It would work better if you tell us exactly what rod series you are gonna pick and we tell u want you are looking... some of the particulars may vary from rod series to rod series and size to size

I personally would be freaking ecstatic to get a NRX. Good luck flipflops. Let us know if you need anything And dont forget after you give him his gift to show him how to get on this forum.... we'd love to have him on here too! This is one big family and for alot of us has been a great way to learn alot and pick eachothers brains.

What rod and reel is this?
If you get more info from his fishing buddy on maybe what rod he would like or need...then that would be helpful... otherwise I'd just go with the most universal rod I can think of...which is what I listed about...it would allow him to use multiple techniques No. While lews is a great company and I have more than a half dozen of their reela... there are 2 other companies that make absolute killer reels... daiwa and shimano make great reels.. But...lews top of the line reels are just that .. top of the line

@flipflops IF you go with the Loomis instead you have a couple options. There are two rod lines.. one is the Glx line. They start around 450. They are excellent rods, some of the best for a long time. then they have the NRX. They start around 530. Nrx is a dream for most guys... Both line ups have an offering in 7 foot or 7 foot 1 inch. I think both have a 6'8 offering as well. I personally would get him a MH ( medium heavy rod) it should say MBR Or JWR. Easy to find on tacklewarehouse and on American Legacy Fishing. 6'8 to 7'1 MH ROD. That's gonna be the most useful tool and most universal in my opinion and experience.

It's barely an upgrade over the hyper mag. Both are the flagship reels.

Ned rig vs. shakey head
Man I was ned rigging, long before it had national attention... I was just putting a finesse worm or robo worm on a crappie jig head.. shakey head was the same.deal for me... i really like the shakey head.. it's a bait FOR ME, that can be Bubba fished. (Up size size everything and use it on heavier gear and even sometimes huge presentations, I have used 3/8 jig heads and 9 inch worm) It's nothing for me to use larger or heavier jig head, maybe a longer or crazier worm style, and pitch it under docks on edges of vegetation and simply power fish it. That being said, that concept defeats the purpose of ned rig. The ned whole purpose of the ned is to be sublte. I personally.love a shakey head it's one of my go to baits and one of my panic baits... if I need a bite, I feel confident in a 1/8 - 1/4 ounce jig head, with a straight tail worm. Another evolution of the shakey head that's been super productive for me has been a 1/4 or 5/16 oz stand up jig head fished on straight floro, with a watermelon w/red flake zoom shakey tails worm. Its an odd combo, I get that.. but all the action is on the fall and then.you get a little action from the tail when you sit and shake it. I power fish the the crap out of it. It's a bait that I like to pitch to targets, work it, and then reel it up and pitch again... super effective on boat docks and in grass lines. Have fun with it, shakey head fishing is fun!

Got Skunked Saturday
Try punching it.... I know it seem like early in the year for it, but I had to do it Saturday. Fish got lock jaw on top of the 2 main lakes on the chain are flooded so they are constantly pumping water to the river... so the water level on the 3rd lake in the chain was down... the fish really backed up into the hydrilla and were just chillin with no inclination to feed. I starting punching the holes in the hydrilla. I had one 7'6 heavy rod and one 7'1 heavy rod. One with 1/2 once tungsten weight and rage bug, the other with 1 ounce tungsten, punch skirt and rage craw.... I ended up narrowing it down to a 1/2 ounce with no skirt and rage craw for the most bites...bites were hard as crap to detect and they were hitting it on the fall or the first bounce. I broke off twice using a leader on the first try with 1/2 ounce... went without with good success. I has more success fishing the deeper holes.. If you do start catching fish in that spot, start a mental check list.of what you did and where and how so you can narrow it down. Top water would be my second option. If not a pad crasher, maybe a toad or a something like a rat,

What rod and reel is this?
@flipflops I hope our info last night helped. If not the lews pro ti/john crews rod, then above comment about just getting him a Gloomis NRX rod or GLX rod and no reel, would be my only.other suggestion. They are very expensive but almost all of us would agree that that would be AWESOME. In bass fishing community NRX ans Glx rods by gloomis are held in the highest regards. But I think he will be thrilled to get the Lews Pro Ti and Cashion Elite John crews Signature rod.

Soft bites
Dude, it made me sick, just watching that video. I just want to cry now.

Rage Toad
It's a really cool inexpensive topwater lure. The video Glenn made was pretty cool.

5500c3 ABU or Lew's SD3H Super Duty 300
Yeah JJ, sounds like the Lews SD, night the way to go. What you can do is call Lews today and talk to someone and just look into what type of parts are available and what are some little things you need or can get if needed to optimize performance outta that reel. Lews has pretty good customer support and they have a large following... since OKUMA is a site sponsor, maybe @Glenn or @Bluebasser86 , or onenofnthenguys that have an okuma reel may know of which of their reels would fit your needs. And maybe they known how to get the most out of it. 13 and kastking both make 300 size reels but I know nothing about them. If not lews, them I'm almost instinctively looking at Daiwa or Shimano. Good luck JJ. Hope this helps.

5500c3 ABU or Lew's SD3H Super Duty 300
Man jj, that's a pretty good question. can another reel be an option? Like maybe a daiwa lexa, or a tranx? Love my lews tps but i don't know much about the SuperDuty. I have 4 c3s that I got from a yard sale..killer reels.. Edit, I don't know much about it as far as being able to turn it into the long cast machine u want.... I had one of the first ten SD reels and used it for flipping ..wasn't impressed...but.it wasnt.bad

What rod and reel is this?
Yes, the crews rods are the top of the line Cashion rods. They are all of equal quality, but they all serve a different purpose for bass fishing.. but the rod I personally would choose would be the 7'2 MH worm/jig rod. Generally those kind of rods are all purpose rods that almost all of use get alot of use out of. I dont have a Cashion, but I hear they are great rods. I would be thrilled to get it as a gift.

Gotta hand it to dad

What is the best line to use with a top water hard bait?
50lb braid is pretty much what i use across the board, unless were are talking a spinning rod. I could probably be a little more specific as far as pound strength on each set up, but it works fine for everything including topwater.. Like Blue said, you dont need to cross their eyes, I just reel down quick and just lean into it. I have baitcast rod with 12 test mono that I use for a little bit of everything... it's a good topwater line.

Baitcaster ratios
Thanks man, that's probably why I hate deep crankin. Even with the "crankin" reel i use, it's a chore. Guess i never realized how much ipt, you lose after that long cast. Def good look into getting a 300 reel.

I have $500 - this is what I decided
@MUSLENUTZ what did you end up getting? I'm all about the tatulas ans saving money, but that expride and stradic would make a SICK combo.

Jitterbugs
I still throw them from time to time. not often tho. They do work..I gave caught big fish on them... its a big fish bait. I've just been stuck on a few other wake baits... the megabass I jack, Ima roumba, and the KVD 2.5 WB.
