yeah but having those patrols would keep me from worrying too much about my vehicle sitting at the ramp for hours while I'm fishing. That is true and one reason why I tend to fish one lake most of the time (the aforementioned TVA ramp/lake). The only true knock on that particular ramp is the lack of a john and the constant lingering stench of urine. And the packs of coons.

They're not so good if you leave them in the locker from the middle of October until the middle of January. Nor are Lance crackers and Bumblebee tuna and ham salad.

The thing is, even if a ramp is patrolled every 15-20 minutes, that still leaves 10-15 minutes for shenanigans. A friend's dad had his truck stolen from inside his employer's gate. People rolled in, told the guard they were there to pick up a friend's truck, he let them in. The police can't be there 24/7. Arming yourself means you are taking responsibility for your own protection.

Unless they are there 24/7, patrols don't help a lot. One of the ramps I spoke of earlier is about 5 miles from the VA/KY state line. Secluded to say the least. It is patrolled somewhat regularly. That still doesn't stop a lot of the problems that contribute to the location's reputation. I know of one TVA ramp that gets patrolled every 2-3 hours by the TVA. While I've never had any problems there, I've heard of people coming in after a night of fishing to find their truck missing.
