  1. I have that exact combo. The 721 is a blast.
  2. This is exactly the same problem I have. I'm going to send mine off to dvt.
  3. The magnetic brake knob doesn't seem to be engaging. Any ideas how to fix it?
  4. I use casting gear for everything except for live bait and drop shots. For light stuff like 1/8 oz I use a scorpion xt with an avail finesse spool on a loomis imx cr721 rod and it is just plain fun. I could use spinning gear but I just prefer casting.
  5. You can't lose with any of the recommendations above. For $160 you could get a pro qualifier/carbonlite combo from bps. Go with a medium/heavy rod and a 6.4 reel.
  6. The title says it all. What do you think is the most purchased rod in america? I'm guessing it's an ugly stik spinning rod.
  7. A couple of years ago I read these types of posts and couldn't believe the money people put into combos and now I'm right up there with them, lol. I will say I look for sales and used stuff. My combo would have retailed for over $1000, but I spent $550 which is still a lot of money.
  8. I've had mine for almost 2 years and I use it a lot. I've since bought omens, envys, daiwas, megabass, loomis and guess what... I still love my carbonlite.
  9. I own 1 dobyns, a dx743 and it is my absolute favorite senko/light t rig rod. They are balanced and in my hands one of the most sensitive rods I own. My advice is to wait for the holiday sales. There are a couple on the flea market too.
  10. The tdz variants are my favorite platform. I have 4 (2 r+, 105, 103). These reels in decent used condition are imo the best deal out there for the money. If I have a choice between $150 for one of these or a brand new $150 modern reel, I will take a tdz. My favorite are the r+ with 7.1 gear swap. Light, smooth and casts like a dream not to mention all of the upgrade options available. You made a great choice.
  11. Wow, how did you get those deals?
  12. 50e series shimano would be a fun reel for you.
  13. I believe that the new generation of casting gear converts will be left retrieve.
  14. I fished with spinning gear exclusively up until 2 years ago and I used every technique with them just fine. Up north it seems like no one uses casting gear. Now I use %99 casting gear, but only because it is more enjoyable for me. I do think that I can cast more accurately with casting gear though, but in the end it is just a personal preference.
  15. The mojo glass crankster is the only st croix I have left. I used to have a mojo bass worm/jig rod, but I sold it because I didn't like it. The mojo glass is actually my favorite crank bait rod and it is fairly light and sensitive for a glass rod. I use it for shallow to medium depth cranks, squarebills and lipless in open water. I like this rod because of it's parabolic action and it slings the lures. I also like the fact that I could bounce the lures off cover and the soft tip wouldn't get me hung up as easily. The parabolic action always pinned the fish just right and my hook up ratio is amazing. I had a moderate action graphite before this and seemed to lose fish after fish.
  16. Actually that is one of the articles that inspired me to look into supertuning. I also don't want to mess with sanding.
  17. I just bought a dremel and want to learn how to supertune my reels. Does anyone flush bearings by spinning them on a dremel in acetone? Would this work with shielded bearings? I've read about polishing the gear teeth and pinion with soft wheel brushes which are used for jewelry. Do you think there is any benefit to this?
  18. That sounds like a killer combo. Let us know how you like it.
  19. You picked the right reel for lighter weights for sure. I have the curado 51e and scorpion xt 1001 which are basically the same reel as the chronarch 51e in different colors. Great reels for lighter stuff.
  20. BPS pro qualifier/carbonlite combos go for $160 year around. I bought one a couple of years ago and it has served me well. I have the 7' mh carbonlite and I use it for the same techniques you intend. It's sensitive and light. Get the 7.1 pq.
  21. Can you leave the metal shields on and effectively flush them or do you need to remove them? How do you remove them? I was all set to flush the spool bearings and I couldn't for the life of me get them off.
  22. My dobyns dx743 fits all of those weights and techniques very well.
  23. I have too many and I'm trying to thin the herd soon. I have a bunch of spinning combos, but I use the pflueger president/daiwa cielo 6'11" ml/xf the most for drop shots and shaky head. Favorite casting combos: scorpion xt/dx743 and curado 51e/ megabass x7 extreme mission. Just picked up a tdz r+, but don't have enough time with.
  24. I agree, I broke 2 rods doing nothing more than casting and they were higher priced rods. I guess there is a price to pay for lighter, more sensitive rods. I've never had an issue with my cheaper, heavier rods.
