  1. 20lb power pro braid with about 6 ft. of 8lb fluoro as a leader of your choice. I like berkley fluoro or p-line. Learn how to tie alberto knot or double uni knot for the leader.
  2. There are tons of great options in that price range. I primarily use the lews line. I would look at the tournament pro. I don't own any shimano, but I'm really interested in the curado i.
  3. Most spincast rods are light or ultra lite. You might be able to use it for light cranks or weightless plastics, but throwing that stuff is tricky if you're new to baitcasters. You'll probably backlash a bit because you need more weight. There are some decent inexpensive rods out there. Get a mh rod.
  4. I have the same reel. I bought it a couple of years ago when my interest in fishing started to become an addiction. I wish I got the 30 instead, but I still use it for everything bass fishing. I go to south carolina for vacation and do some inshore. It is fantastic for pulling some reds out of murrells inlet.
  5. Does this line of rods go on sale during the presidents day or memorial day at tw?
  6. I love my mojo glass. I think most glass rods will work fine though.
  7. I bought one last year on sale and used it all summer. I like it, but it's my first yak. The only issue is it seems slow and tough to paddle. Are other 12' yaks in this price range also such a work out or is it just this model?
  8. I'll bet you need to loosen the spool tension. If it's too tight it pushes the spool out too far and the side plate gets stuck.
  9. I used to use a carbonlite medium with moderate action. I lost too many fish with it. Then I got a mojo bass glass and never looked back. Surprisingly sensitive and keeps them hooked.
  10. Taylor, I used spinning gear up until 2 years ago. The first casters I got were righty and I never felt comfortable. I started getting lefties and never looked back. Now I'm trying to sell my righties. Short answer, go with left-hand reels. My biggest regret in fishing is all of the money I've wasted on tackle and gear I don't use. I have rods that just sit there and a tackle bag full of stuff I don't use.
  11. Does anyone use 6.4:1 reel for deep cranking (12+ft)? I've heard Rick Clunn didn't use low gear ratio reels. I don't really want to buy another reel because I wouldn't be using it that much.
  12. Crankcaster, have you thought about the carbonlite/pro qualifier combos? For $160 you get over $200 worth and I think awesome quality. I love mine. For jigging you could get the 7' mh/f or 7' h/xf matched with a 7.1:1 pro qualifier. For shallow cranks, the 7'med/moderate matched with 6.4:1. For line, I use 30lb. braid with fluoro leader. Cranks, 8-10lb leader. Jigging, 15-20lb leader. It's just easier for me to put like an 8' leader on.
  13. Thanks everyone for responding. Sirsnook, I vacation in south carolina and fish the marshes for reds, flounder and speckled trout. I usually use spinning gear, but I love my baitcasters. What advantages do you see with spinning reels?
  14. My wife is going to kill me...I just treated myself too. I'm getting a dx 743. I'm hoping she's not home on delivery day.
  15. I love pflueger spinning reels. My president is on a new daiwa cielo 6' 10" ml/xf. This will be my drop shot set up. I like my trion just as much as my president too.
  16. Anyone use a lews speed spool or pro qualifier regularly in saltwater? How do they hold up?
  17. I don't have experience with the fish eagle, but I'm sure it will be great. However I would probably opt for a longer rod (7'+) fishing from shore for longer casts. The pro qualifier is a fantastic reel and when on sale is the best bang for your buck.
  18. Thanks Gator. I'm using a president too!
  19. New member here and I was wondering if anyone has an opinion about the cielo. I just got the spinning model in 6'10" ml/xf and intend to use it for drop shotting and flick shaking. I'm a power fishing guy, but I'm intrigued with finesse style and want to add it to my arsenal. Thanks
