  1. I picked up a crucial spinning 6'10" med/fast which is listed as a jerkbait rod. I used a $10 coupon plus I had a $20 gift card so out of pocket I spent $64. How do you guys feel about these rods? I read a lot of bad reviews about them. I haven't fished it yet, but it definitely is tip heavy. How is the sensitivity? But I figure I can't get a better rod for this price.
  2. I'm going to get one of these but I'm not sure which one. Can anyone who has these rods give me some input? Do they fish similar techniques? How is the spinner bait special do with bottom contact and with what weights? Is the emtf tip noticeably faster? I fish from the bank, boat and yak so I'm leaving towards the shorter rod. I realize the sbs is designed for moving baits but I want to use it for bottom contact too but I'm not sure if the tip would work. Is there a difference in sensitivity between these two?
  3. How do you rig and fish these?
  4. Check a couple of things 1) spool tension or 2) the release mechanism may still be engaged so you have to take it apart again and re-engage the thumb bar mechanism. I may not be giving a good description, but this happened to me once.
  5. x2. At $159 for the combo, it's hard to beat.
  6. IMO, the penn is nice, but I'd rather have the pflueger president 3000 size or get the penn in 3000 size. I'm also not a fan of the ugly stick for bass. It would be fine for saltwater live bait, but not my preference for artificials and bassin.
  7. The pq/carbonlite was my first casting combo and I still use it every time I fish. For $160 it's tough to beat. The carbonlite is a very sensitive rod for me and the dual brakes on the pq are a bonus. I recommend a lefty if you are coming from spinning gear.
  8. When I started fishing the ohio 3 years ago, I caught lots of smallies, but nothing bigger than 3lbs. But I also used to get tons of sauger and walleye. Even last year I could spend a few hours with a grub and jighead and catch 30 sauger/eyes, white bass, and a few smallies. This year something is definitely not right.
  9. BPS pro qualifier/carbonlite combo for $159. Get the 6.4 gear ratio. If you are used to spinning reels get the left hand retrieve pq. With the carbonite try a 7' or 6'6" medium heavy/ fast action. This would be a versatile set up: jigs, t-rigs, senkos, spinnerbaits, lipless etc.
  10. Most of my reels are 6.x:1. I don't have any slower reels because I don't deep crank much. The main reason I like a faster reel is so I can retrieve it faster when the lure is out of the strike zone and I want to make another cast. My fastest reel is an 8.1 t-3 ballistic which I use for senkos and light t-rigs and it's very efficient when I want to make lots of casts and pitches.
  11. For 5" senkos I'd go with 4/0
  12. I adjust both the spool tension and mag breaks depending on the weight of the lure.
  13. I fish the ohio river in pittsburgh and I have to say this is the worst fishing I've seen. Very few smallies, white bass, hybrids, sauger and walleye. I'm not sure if the extremely cold winter did something, but it's been really tough. Does anyone else fish the ohio river notice the tough fishing?
  14. Some of these guys seem like great teachers. I'd love to learn from kvd, rick clunn and a. martens. Timmy Horton and randy howell seem like fantastic guys. Geez there a lot of guys I'd like to learn from. 3 years ago I started this addiction of bass fishing. 3 years ago, I couldn't stand watching it on tv. Now I dvr everything and ordered the world fishing network lol.
  15. Perfect combo for the price range. I have no desire to upgrade the president. A few weeks ago my champion extreme broke which dobyns replaced (great customer service and awesome rod) so I used my carbonlite. I have to say the carbonlite performed great. Sensitive, light and casts senkos a mile.
  16. With treble baits you have to either use a parabolic rod or loosen your drag. For lipless I prefer a graphite rod, but loosen my drag. I can rip it through grass better.
  17. I sold mine too and my buddy has one and he never uses his. I've heard you need to move up to an avid to really appreciate the st croix line. Some day I'd love to get my hands on a legend extreme.
  18. I fish a river most of the time and I've never even got a bite on chatterbaits. Has anyone had success with chatterbaits and small mouth? And if so do you have any tips? I did catch some large mouth in a pond the other day though.
  19. I have the world fishing network and some of the shows are based in England. It seems like all their fishing tournaments are for carp and suckers. They use some really strange gear. Don't they have bass there?
  20. Any of those are great. I would go with the fenwick or crucial. For some reason I just don't like the st croix mojo's except for the mojo glass.
  21. To get the birdsnest out push the release button and gently pull the line until you see where the loop is and use a pick or even a toothpick and insert the pick into the loop and pull it out. Then pull the line again and repeat until you get all the loops free. No guarantees, but worth a try. Fluoro is the worst for this. One of the reasons I switched to braid.
  22. I have the most success with plain black and green pumpkin. I think any dark color is all you need. There is one color that I have yet to catch anything on...I think they call it blue pearl w/flake. I thought it would be a good color because it is so bright. But nothing.
  23. Lots of options: lews bb-1, lews tournament mg, pro qualifier.
