If you want to hold them horizontally use your other hand to support the bottom of the fish.

I'd use 30 lb braid + 12-15 lb leader for the baitcaster 10-15 lb braid + 10 lb leader for the 7' spinning rod. Use this for weightless plastics 6 lb mono for the Shakespeare 4 lb mono for the light rod.

Braid to fluoro leader diameters do not have to match. 30/40 lb braid to a leader sounds good to me. Maybe 50 if you're fishing some thick stuff.

I may be patient enough to fish a jig in the winter but this is pushing it..

I think you answered your own question! Me personally, I'd throw a suspending jerkbait and fish that super slow. I like the smaller sizes like the Pointer 78.

It may be filling with water... give it a couple squeezes after every couple casts and see if that helps
