  1. Try the Passaic river if your interested in river fishing. Contains not only bass but pike as well. Rolo had great advice in trying greenwood lake as well. Tappan lake I believe also holds a decent amount of bass but not sure how much is actually in NJ. I can give you a ton of places and a few hook ups to some private lakes if your willing to travel to Morris and Sussex counties. PM me if you want any details.
  2. Maybe it's not the fish that are so DUM....
  3. How is this possible? He's stated that bass do not feed off the bottom.
  4. So you have your starting point. 150$ max. Now it's up to you if you want a new or used rod. Used may get you a "better" higher quality rod but could also cause a lot of heartbreak. Plenty of high quality rods in that range to narrow down. Best advice is to go to local shop and feel for yourself. Some guys like med action up to guys using heavy action rods. Sensitivity is something only YOU can feel for yourself. Too many people worry about what the masses think.
  5. It's all PERSONAL preference. Use what feels right for YOU.
  6. Looks to me as if he's trying to find a material to COVER the cork and not how to clean it.
  7. The line tangles around the PROP!!!!!
  8. I would probably choose a more productive area where you can fish to your strengths.
  9. FALSE statement!!!! And quite honestly the distance lipless can be thrown with a spinning reel is probably way further then any bait casting reel. FYI. Avid bait casting user here... Probably consists of 90% of my uses.
  10. This is the furthest from truth!!!! And burning lipless baits is VERY possible with spinning reels!!!
  11. Please post video of these 75-100 yard casts. I'm sure we can ALL learn something from anyone who can cast that far. What current setup are you achieving this with? I want to order mine tomorrow!!!!! I hope they come in lefty.
  12. Seems to me the OP asked about Clear Lale and Lake Fork. I didn't see anything about Toledo Bend. Your reasoning about fish mortality is beyond me. How are tournaments held on ANY Florida waters? Our water temps here rarely get BELOW 70 degrees at any time of year. So with your reasoning there would be a 100% mortality rate at every event held in Florida.
  13. Being a distance king is equal to girls being a size queen. Lol. Learn to control your placement before you worry about distance. Learn to cast at all angles. Backhand forehand underhand overhead and all angles in between. When you can accurately cast all these different ways then turn around and check your distance. It will have increased significantly.
  14. I grew up in Morris county. From what I know I do not believe there is a large population of bass in that part of the river. Mostly in the Resevoir above and a small amount of them in the lower part of the river. When I saw the picture it looked familiar which is why I had asked and now can give better info.
  15. Can ANYONE answer what the difference between and SV spool and a standard spool is??? Seems as if a lot of guys have these reels but not one person can explain the benefits of this particular spool.
  16. Whole downed trees??? I guess I better get some to use as a tow strap if I get stuck in the mud.
  17. Change your knot and use a drop of super glue.
  18. If your also saying the standard for setting a drag is 33%... How does YOUR conventional wisdom for 50# braid at 4# of drag work?!?!? That's a setting of ONLY 8%!!!!! Please explain.
  19. Sounds like a PM to Ck is in store. Lol
  20. The setup you have now is plenty of length if your catching most fish within 15' of shore. Heavy braid is the standard due to frogs being used in heavy cover and able to get a solid hook set. A lot of problems associated with missed hook sets is most guys have the mentality they need to "bomb" their bait as far away as possible and then wonder why they can't transfer that energy to the fish for a solid hook set. Practice your accuracy over distance 99% of the time. With accuracy and consistency comes distance on its own. Pay more attention to stealth and approach and your numbers and weights will also improve. Learn to use your combo as a TOOL of the trade. All aspects and angles. Practice backhand forehand underhand overhead and all angles in between and you will also find yourself placing baits where most people can't. I was taught as a kid to carry the mentality of... It's not the size of the hammer you use but how you use it is what counts. There is plenty to learn on here and some good advice as well as plenty of downright BS. If in doubt, try it out!!! What may not work for someone else doesn't mean it won't work for you. You'll get a lot of satisfaction when your using substandard equipment and out fishing these guys with their 1000$ combos.
  21. Unfortunately the only way to correct the problem is mono leader or wax as stated in previous post.
  22. What differentiates a standard spool compared to an SV spool?
  23. Plain and simple. Drag systems on both spinning and casting reels have washers and springs inside not only the drag material itself. Compressing these springs and washers will lessen its effect over time. If you set your reel at 5lbs of drag at the beginning of the season and don't back off after each use you will be dealing with a significant change at end of season. If reels are serviced regularly then it may happen less. In older reels a felt disk was used as the resistance material inside and was easily compressed. Even with today's composite materials used may not be compressed the springs and washers are still the same!!!
  24. So braid diameter is now the new weight rating also??? Wouldn't 1/3 of 20lbs braid be set at 7lbs????
  25. The braid being 15 lb test for example has much higher tensile properties than nylon or FC and may not start to yield until it reaches 75% of it's tensile strength or 10 lbs for example, the leader will break long before the stronger braid reaches it's yield strength Wouldn't 75% of 15lb test be closer to 11.25lbs? Setting drag at 10lbs would be 66%. How often are you using a scale to measure your drag? You would need to use a scale multiple times throughout the day to check due to mechanical changes your reel goes through during each outing due to temperature changes, drag material compression and swelling etc... Mono from what I have read can stretch up to 40%. Flouro about 25% and braid less then 5%.
