“Ditch Pickles” and “Corn Snakes!”

Another term I’ve heard people use interchangeably and I don’t think I fully understand the difference or if they are basically the same - in terms of reservoir fishing…. The difference between a “Ditch” and a “Creek Channel.”

@WRB and @Mike L I just watched the video Glenn posted recently with Michael Neale who I believe used the term for one of the rods he was using …

That sounds fun, but no plans right now. The tournament I really wanted to go to also was Champlain in July. But of course, a wedding that weekend. Probably can’t mail the gift in and head to NY 😬 and get away with it. Also thinking about Toledo Bend in Sept. Never been there, I bet it’s hot that time of year!

Have heard this phrase used several times - but have found people to mean different things ~ I've heard people say this rod has some tip - meaning its soft enough to cast a lighter lure far. Have also heard some people say this rod has some tip - meaning it's stiffer and you can really drive a hook deep. Opposite meanings for the same phrase - what's your interpretation??

A few years back, pretty sure I saw him in a relatively new/dugout quarry lake next to Arthrex near the town of Ave Maria, FL just east of Naples. Had to have known somebody to get access to that privately owned puddle. But then again, he’s Roland Martin! If I would’ve asked they’d a shown me the “No Trespassing” sign…

Just prior to the days of YouTube, GoPros and drones… so like 12 years ago.. I was fishing a river in late Fall in Minnesota early one morning and there was only one other boat. 3 guys in it and one filming. Steve Pennaz filming Lake Commandos. Watched them for awhile and they waved as they went by. After awhile they stopped over and asked how I was doing and they were very friendly. They usually brought a second boat to film shots from farther away throughout the episode. Not that day, so they asked if they could take a few shots from my boat. The following year they got into drone filming and wouldn’t have needed me. Anyway, all went well despite a really cold drizzly 44 degree day. They filmed from my boat for awhile then went back to fishing and so did I. About an hour later they wrapped up their show and asked me if I’d seen the water level dropping. I said now that you mention it.. Late in the Fall, the city lets the dam out and drops the water level to basically a trickle. Fast forward, a mad dash to get both our boats out of the remaining muddy bank - and almost got stuck til spring. I ran into Steve a couple weeks later at a high school basketball game. He remembered, we laughed and remembered our harrowing experience. I met his son Pierce who is a very cool, special needs guy. Just like my brother. We developed a nice friendship and met on the water a few times. He ended up inviting me twice to compete as a guest on his show. I participated several times in a charity tournament he and Al Lindner put on for many years. One of the nicest and most genuine people I’ve met in the fishing industry or otherwise. Don’t think any of this would’ve happen in today’s world now with drones and YouTubers, never know..

Ok guys - next questions: 1) What are your best times of the year (months) to fish spots? 2) Water depth - and what depth are the fish at? 3) Best lures?

Found this tiny deer tick on me 5 days after a Dale Hollow tournament in late April. The CDC testing for Lyme is at best 50% accurate, so as a precautionary I went right onto 7 days of Doxycycline. I have 2 immediate family members that weren’t diagnosed with Lyme despite being tested 2-3 times back in 2020/2021. By then the disease went systemic and has literally ruined their lives since.

What rod/reel line are you guys throwing these on? I have BFS and 10 lb braid + 7 lb fluoro leader. I do 2-3 fast twitches, pause, followed by 2-3 more twitches…

Have used it 5-6 times... caught fish only 2 of those times, but they were plus size for BFS. So like those above I have mixed feelings on it. Unique concept between a light jerkbait and topwater that goes down about 6-12 inches in the water column. Has its place (just not around cover/weeds).

I've thought many times about pound-for-pound what fights hardest: A 3 pound smallmouth A 3 pound spotted bass A 3 pound white bass I don't know the absolute answer - and need to catch 1000 more of each to render a firm decision 😉 But I will say this - at least in cold water, the white bass has no equal.

When you say the rod will be fine, I assume you mean the Lowrider 6'7" MH. Realistically, I'm throwing 3/8 oz Chug Norris, or 1/2 Giant Dog X for this rod. Sound right for this rod?

Yes, had similar issues with ALF before.. I use them because of their trade-in program. But man, their delays and "ghost" stock are happening more and more often it seems.

Tell me more about the topwater capabilities of this rod... I saw the 6'7" and in the 6'8" in the Lowrider. Looking at a dedicated topwater rod, back up floating worm and jerkbait. I like the shorter length in a kayak. I would be throwing primarily 3/8-1/2 oz topwaters... which rod will handle the heavier 1/2 oz lures better? Not only imparting action (walk-the-dog, chugging poppers, etc.), but staying hooked up with treble hooks? Thx!

Despite moving 1000 miles away from Omnia, I still got an order from them within 5 days during the holiday week. I placed 2 other orders the same day - one at TW and one at ALF - it is now 8 days and neither have been shipped yet.

Agreed on Jocasse. Went there last Fall after Helene in my Autopilot kayak. At 3.7 mph I went 90 minutes on high power and didn’t even make it to the first waterfall. Was afraid I’d run out of battery. Since then I got a larger one with a Bluetooth meter to monitor how much battery I have left. Days like that I miss my bass boat, but I definitely want to get back there!

I plan to get to Lanier hopefully soon… I moved about 9 months ago to Greenville, SC and have fished Hartwell, but not Keowee yet. Are the spots that much better on Keowee than Hartwell?

The entire body of the T-Mac is more consistent than a Trick Worm - subtle difference but if you fish it often enough I think you can tell. The Airtail Wiggler’s air bubble tail floats one end straight up the best of the three IMO.

Since switching from a bass boat to a kayak - I haven’t really changed my rods/reels much to adapt, but one I’m considering is a different topwater rod. The tip down motion with my current rod is hitting the water more than I like. Looking for recommendations for a baitcasting rod for poppers and walking baits 3/8-1/2 oz - In the 6’3” to 6’6” range. TIA

I agree, if you want to try a couple worms that look like the trick worm but float much better for things like Neko or Shaky try either the NetBait T-Mac worm or the GrandeBass Airtail Wiggler. I haven’t gone back to the Trick worm in years since switching over…

I use an ALX Zolo Dragger at 7’4”. On a regular bass boat I use 17 lb fluorocarbon with a 10 lb mono dropper. On a kayak I still use the mono dropper, but tie to 30 lb braid. You can’t take that extra step backward in a kayak to lay the lumber to them on the hook set, so I go with the no stretch braid. It frays easier than fluoro so you have to check it/re-tie more frequently. I also use a 7.1 Tatula Elite reel which is key to get maximum casting distance when throwing the old ball and chain.
