  1. Do you shop at your local bait/tackle shops or at one of the many retail giants? I am studying business and have started to see the importance of keeping money local. Any thoughts?
  2. I like the baitball series. I've had relatively decent success with a few of them. I wouldn't classify them as a gimmick lure by any means. Just a redesign of an old favorite.
  3. Don't listen to the jealous folks. Thats a 20 pounder all day!
  4. Skeet Reese glasses from Wal-Mart work fine for me. Cheap and pretty durable. I have had the same pair all year. Just make sure you clean them regularly and keep them in a safe place. I put mine in a sock in my tackle bag, I also use the sock with some good ole breath to clean them!
  5. Makes sense. I don't even carry a tape measure! Haha
  6. Welcome to the forum! You will definitely learn a lot. If you haven't already subscribed to BassResource on youtube, you need to. Extremely informative videos that will help any angler. This forum if full of great people who all share the passion of Bass Fishing. Welcome home and Tight Lines!
  7. I am stationed at Fort Riley, KS. Breakneck Lake on post is great for bass fishing, as well as catfishing. Just make sure you make an account on isportman (google it). I have tons of success with soft plastics and spinner baits on Breakneck Lake. I don't fish at Milford much, but have heard that there are a lot of good areas for bank fsherman. One thing I would definitely consider investing in this winter, when the waters are frozen, is a kayak. Dicks Sporting Goods has some decent ones. They will allow you to access places you could only dream about from the bank. PM if you have any more questions about the area.
  8. I have noticed that a lot of people measure their catches and weigh them. I have a scale and only wiegh them though. What are the benefits of measuring the bass? I asked one guy what his biggest catch was and he told me 19'', but didn't have a weight for it. Kind of seems pointless IMO. Am I missing something here?
  9. Here on Fort Riley we have our ow personal Game Wardens. One day I was bank fishing on the other side of a large pond and he pulled up. As he got closer I saw the brass. I set my rod down and started to meet him halfway. I always leave my wallet in my car when I am fishing, don't really know why though. I asked if he needed to see the License and he politely said yes. So we both headed to the car, chatting along the way about the quality of fish in the pond. I was super respectful and he thanked me for meeting him halfway (it was a long walk). He then proceeded to point out every single feature in the pond that I had no clue about. A tree here, ledge there, couple of laydowns there. He even told me about dozens of other ponds that are hardly ever fished there on post! Moral, is to always follow the rules, and be respectful. It will help you out more times than not.

  11. I decided on an Ascend FS12T as my starter kayak. The price fits, and it seems like a good starter. Once I get more educated on kayak fishing I will get something better along the lines of a Big Rig, and keep the FS12T as a guest kayak for my friends and family. I appreciate the advice! I find myself seaching kayaks everyday online looking for that lovely $250 big rig on craigslist! HAHA
  12. I am a bank fisherman. One setup I ALWAYS have in my car is a 6'6'' M spinning rod with 6# mono rigged with a wacky rig finnese worm. This works wonders for me during any conditions. Slowly walk up to about 10' from the waters edge, and start fan casting it and let it sink all the way to the bottom. Once it's done, twitch it a couple times and let it fall on a slack line again. Paying extra attention to pockets and points.
  13. I will be learning a lot more of everything. I have been a bank fisherman all year, but I am getting a fishing kayak early next year, so I will probably stick with working the shallows like I have been and getting smarter with that before I try any new stuff. Being ON the water instead of BY the water will open up tons of learning opportunities.
  14. This is pretty neat, too bad I don't have enough active posts. Next year for sure though!
  15. Being in the military has taught me many things. One of the more important ones is the importance of PCCs (Pre-Combat Checks), and PCIs (Pre-Combat Inspections). PCCs are done the day before to ensure all equipment is in good condition, and PCIs are doing just before. This got me thinking, What does your Pre-Fishing Trip Check/Inspection List look like?
  16. What kind of line on those setups?
  17. I decided to go with an Ascend FS12T. I will still get the PFD and paddle. It's all going to be more than I had hoped, but based on everything I have read and seen it will be a decent starter kayak for a while. Hopefully I can get a Jackson in the next 4-5 years though.
  18. I don't see many topics on here regarding what kind of rod and reels one should take on a trip. I know it comes down to what type of fishing one will be doing, but keeping it simple and only taking 3 setups to cover a majority of fishing techniques. The reason I ask is I have 3 combos that have given me a lot of success from the bank and also from a boat; 6'9'' MH baitcaster 6'6'' M baitcaster 6'6'' M spinning reel. What types of line would you guys recommend I use on each, and for what fishing tactic? I am looking to be as cost effective as possible by using setups that allow for versatility on the water. I know I prefer to target shallow waters (less than 15") a majority of the time. Thanks in advance guys!
  19. Yeah I will be going cheap and simple when it comes to the roof rack at first. I plan on getting a truck later next year when the year end clearance goes on! But until then, The ole accord will cut it. Thanks again for the link!
  20. I will probably be transporting this yak on-top of a 2000 Honda Accord for a few months. Do you think the FS12T will be too much for me to transport?
  21. Can you supply me with that link? I love DIY stuff, makes one feel self-sufficient so to speak.
  22. You guys are giving me some really great advice, I truly appreciate it. This is a big endeavor for me and I want to know as much as possible before I buy.
  23. I have recently decided to embark on the Kayak endeavor. I have done some research, and have narrowed my choices down to 2 kayaks, the Ascend FS10 sit-in, and the Ascend FS12T sit-on-top. I am 6' 2'' 240 lbs and will be fishing primarily lakes and ponds. I went to BPS and looked at both kayaks, and they each had pros and cons for what I was wanting. What are your opinions of pros and cons of each? What kind of rigging and customization should I look into doing? What are some of your best functionality tips for yak fishing?
  24. I am a big guy at 6'2'' 240 lbs. I want to get into kayak fishing but really don't know many things about them. I know I want a sit on, and I plan on spending about $400 the kayak itself. I am not wanting to go overboard with my 1st purchase, and I want to keep it simple yet functional until I get more knowledgeable and dedicated. I am sure one day I will be getting a Jackson Big Rig with all the bells and whistles, but not anytime in the next year or 2. I know I will need things like an oar, PFD, and some other accessories. Any advice guys?
