Fast or X-Fast action jig rod?
Xfast for large wire hooks. Fast for small wire hooks is how I personally prefer my rods.

swimbait colors for blueback herring lakes
Unfortunely both my suggestions for herring colors are expensive swimbait lures as ive never had success on budget friendly swimbaits. Bbz makes a baby shad in blue herring thats 2.5 inches as well as a blue herring color intheir 4 inch shad that ive done well with. For soft plastic I like pro blue shiner or silver shiner colors to match herring.

Non tournament guys
When fishing in a boat as I dont own a boat. I limit myself to three rods and one backpack. When shore fishing I limit myself to two rods and one backpack. I bring 1 medium power rod for worms light jigs. I bring one medium heavy to throw jigs and spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Faster taper but it just means I have to be smart about playing the fish.

What reel capacity calculators do yall use?
King Salmon. I fish for them on bass rigs with 20lb braid to make the fight last longer when they go into the piers on lake michigan.

Fishing fathers
I don't think my oldest has the heart for it, can't get his hands dirty. My middle son, plays with plastic soft baits constantly, hes a giant swimbait I got from MTB that I'll never throw (it's something like 5 oz I'll never have a setup to handle swimbaits that large.). He constantly asks to go fishing, he wants to hold the fish, reel the line in, he wants to help me clean reels, play with rods. Play with any lures that don't have a hook on it. Daughter is only two weeks old, so we will see on that one. But my middle son will definitely be a fishermen if I keep bringing him with me an encouraging his behavior. I think this year he is getting his first spincast rod and reel.

When to set the hook?
Hooksets are free, missed fish are heart breaking. Often, and carelessly.

Recommend me a casting rod for light techniques
What it sounds like you're looking for is a BFS setup for lighter lures under 1/8th of an oz. If that's the case, those tend to be the more expensive side of things, both in rod and reel because it's more of a luxury thing than something that most people actually use. You're going to be better off buying, in the 150 dollar price range. A used St Croix, or G Loomis rod that you can find on fleabay that is spinning. Baitcasting, super light weight setups are expensive to preform properly.

What reel capacity calculators do yall use?
That's normally what I do but Idon't have hands on access to either reel. I like both, and the only thing its going to come down to is line capacity at this point. The one reel calculator I tried said I could get over 267 yards of 20lb smackdown on the Aldabaren which I knew wasn't even close to right. I'm guessing it's more in the 110-115 range where as the Met MGL will be in the 130-135 range.

What reel capacity calculators do yall use?
I have no memory of which one I used to use to calculate the capacity for braid on a reel where it isnt listed by the manufacturer. I'm looking to see how much 20lb Smackdown I can get on an Aldebaran 51HG vs a Met 151 MGL XG

Legend Glass vs. Lunkerstik
The same material does not equal the same results. Two aluminium engine blocks, one in a hyundi senata is not going to give you the same results as the aluminium engine block in a porsche 911.

What would you use this rod for?
Looks to me like a weightless worm, fluke, and creature bait rod for days when the bite is tough and they want soft gentle subtle presentations. Lethargic bass rod would be a good name.
-
What would you use each rod for?
I'd use the dobyns for a moving bait lure, like a spinnerbait, or a chatterbait setup. I wouldn't use it for jigs because the reel ratio you have on it is a lower gearing and I believe firmly that you want a high gear ratio when throwing jigs especially into cover to yank the fish and not let it take you and wrap you up around anything. The kistler would be a great setup for soft plastics, worms, craws, creature baits with bullet weights on them. Throwing them in and around. So I'd find a nice reel to go with it and the great sensitivity.

strong spinnerbaits
When I lived in Illinois/Wisconsin I fished for Pike pretty regularly during mid day on flats in the shallows between the morning and evening bite on bass. For them specifically I had to start using Terminator T1 spinnerbaits. They're a bit pricey but they last a good bit longer than the rest of the spinnerbaits I've tried to use on those fish. Even now that I'm down south, I still use them and they still catch me bass and a variety of other fish as well. I strongly recommend them.

Several spinning rod questions.
1) Would you consider any spinning rod with a 1/8 oz. low rating suitable for finesse? Yes, you'd be surprised what the average lures outside of BFS sort of things weigh with line, hook, and knot counted in the weight. Throwing a genuine 1/16th of an OZ is incredibly uncommon. 2) Would you consider a rod rated to 3/4 oz. or 1 oz. a finesse rod if it had a 1/8 oz. low rating? Absolutely not, most rods load up better between 1/2 or 3/4ths of the rating range. Also do some reviews, rods like Dobyns sometimes say 1/4 to 1 1/2 OZ but you can't throw anything with them under 3/4ths of an OZ. Hands on reviews matter just as much as what the rod has printed on it. 3) Should a rod be able to cast below 1/8 oz.? Not all of them, technique specific rods should. Often times you won't cast under 1/8th of an OZ unless you're pan fishing. 4) Is rod action important? And if so Rod action is incredibly important if you have the budget to allow it to be, a cane pole works. It all depends on what you can afford to allow to matter. 5) for what techniques is action important? Extra fast for single hooks, sometimes fast. Jigs I want Extra fast rods to get a solid hook set with a larger wire single hook to really snap it into the fishes mouth. Texas rig I'll be okay with a Fast taper to snap the hook into the mouth as the wire of the hook is usually less thick than what jigs or spinnerbaits run. Moderate action helps you with treble hooks to keep the rod loaded while fighting the fish, which makes it so that they have a significantly more difficult time throwing the hook out of their mouth which is important because the treble hooks are often smaller, and can come out easier. 6) I know this is totally personal and subject to where and how you fish, but what rod lengths do you prefer? I refuse to fish anything under 7', personal preference I feel more accurate, with a longer cast in the 7'2-7'6'' range. I also don't like anything over a 7'6'' it makes it increasingly difficult to transport especially considering I primarily fish banks.

Starting from nothing
Just checking back in, hopefully you're going to move forward with your plan. Please keep me updated, I'd love to see the results and talk back and forth as you go along. Nothing makes me happier than watching someone else fall more in love with the sport of fishing, and everything that goes along with it.

The ultimate best combos for the following techniques
3/8 - 1/2 oz Jig ** Rod Name: *** Length: *** Lure Rating: ** Line 3/8 - 1/2 oz Spinnerbaits ** Rod Name: *** Length: *** Lure Rating: ** Line I'm having a rod built for BOTH of these techniques into one rod. I'm using a Rainshadow Eternity blank ETEC72MH-SS, built by Mike at DVT. Wooden split grips or Cork depending on the price difference between the two of them. With either a Diawa Steez or a Met MGL(7.x.x or higher gear ratio). Odds are this is going to be in my eyes the best possible combo having limitedly handled both of them. 30lb smackdown braid Ultra finesse applications ** Rod Name: MHX Elite NEPS86MF-MHX Shimano Core 51mg *** Length: 7'2'' *** Lure Rating: 3/16-5/8ths ** Line 20lb smackdown braid

Shimano baitcaster, which do you perfer?
I'd pick the Metanium MGL over the Antares just because I like the paint job on the Met a little bit better and I don't believe the differences in the performance are that drastic between the two vs my cosmetic addiction to rod/reel appearance.

Reel Suggestions/input
Steez or a Chonarch MGL is what I would go with, maybe if you're looking for a bit more budget a Curado 70.

Do I need a trout stamp?
In Georgia if you plan on putting a line in any river, or stream you need a trout stamp. It's better to be safe than sorry.
