  1. Im curious as to your tackle making process for your cedar squarebills and crankbaits. I definitely wouldnt mind seeing a start to finish post with details and pictures to see how you come out with such beautiful work.
  2. I have a rod that I use for the exact same thing. I had Mike at DVT build it for me, it's an MHX Pro Elite series blank, with a Shimano Core 51MG or a Shimano Aldabaren 51 on it depending on the line/day. Works wonderfully.
  3. I haven't had a backlash in four years. Practice practice practice. High quality products and line help as well. I like both J Braid in the lower end market, and Smackdown in the high end market for braid. Tatsu for Flouro, and I have no use for anything but Yo-Zuri Hybrid. It also helps my cheapest reel is a Chonarch MGL. /e because I remembered the date of my last backlash.
  4. Have a rainshadow Eternity blank built by mike at DVT. ETEC72M-SS
  5. I technically only need 4 as I see most rods redundant M/XF 7'2'' casting MHX Pro, Shimano Core 51MG Light weighted plastics, finnesse jigs, light jerkbaits MH/F 7'2'' casting Rainshadow Eternity, Shimano Chonarch MGL Jigs, spinnerbaits, heavier plastics, chatterbaits, top water MH/M 7'4'' casting St Croix S-Glass, Censored reel Crankbaits, jerkbaits, lipless The next rod depends on if I'm in an up north or down south/spring/winter/summer/fall situation. Up north I'd probably go for a ML setup, for super finnesse stuff where as down south I'd go for a heavier longer rod for casting into true slop where you might pull a 3lb fish out with 10lbs of slop on it.
  6. Gam ewg hooks in the apprioriate size. Better hookup ratio for me personally.
  7. New custom rod from Mike at DVT. 360 plus shipping. New Chonarch MGL 151 XG for 250. 250 for terminal tackle and line. Now just for a swimbait order and a few plastics.
  8. War Eagle Front Runner is basically a swim jig head with a treblehook off the back of it and sometimes added feathers or skirt type material. You tie it to your main line about 8 to 14 inches infront of your moving style lure and its supposed to search slightly higher in the water and help catch additional fish.
  9. If Im using a flouro leader it has nothing to do with the bass. Its the toothy other fish, rocks, or any number of sharp things thatll ruin your day in a heart beat.
  10. Alberto knot, and downsize to 6LB flouro to have two similiar sized lines tied together.
  11. IM rating isn't an industry standard rating, it's a company standard rating. Within the own company the rating will tell you the difference in quality of the rod, but one company to the next, the IM7/8, 40 ton ETC rating means absolutely nothing.
  12. I caught a fish once on a spinner bait at midnight, 3/4th's moon, gentle breeze. So I'll throw it again every time in those exact conditions. I fished next to a guy with a spinne rbait once, I fished a crank bait and he out fished me 3/1. I never throw spinner bait's, I prefer crank bait's. I see a lot of answers like this that are completely circumstantial and situational throughout the forums and I admit I am definitely guilty of doing it from time to time. While past experiences can guide us and give is a general direction or starting point for what the fish might want they in no way dictate the new situation. For the first response, you can throw 10 different baits at that exact time in those exact conditions and that fish might have hit it. It could of been right by its head and he bit it out of aggression. For the second one, was your retrieve too fast? Too slow? Where the fish line shy and he had a lighter, or flouro line on while you fished straight braid? Was your spinner bait tuned to swim straight, or was his crank swimming a bit sideways and that's what made the fish attracted to it? And finally the preference answer. Why is it your preference? How experienced are you at throwing the one which you don't prefer? Are you even throwing the one you don't prefer in situations for it to be successful, or retrieving it in proper variations that would make fish actually interested? We have an incredible group of guys with a vast knowledge of fishing, and for the most part we are giving fairly generalized answers to fairly generalized questions. I think that's why we have so many "what is the best...?" lure/rod/reel/plastic/hard body/soft body etc etc. That and the lack of use of the search function. I also significantly agree with the concept that a lot of folks are looking for someone to validate the answer they already have in their mind and shoot down viable options. I don't think our generalizations, or the vague questions necessarily hurt the community, or fisherman. They will look at the various opinions, and try a couple of them until they hit pay dirt. In a way without being there to read the situation with them I think that's probably the best route. Every day you hit the water could be different. Cold fronts, wind differential, rain, the list goes on and on of what could change in a single day when it comes to water. But let me get off my soap box. Until we can teleport to each other to help each other in person, this is the best we can do. And thank all of y'all who have helped me over the years learning new techniques, and coming up with various ideas for storage, line tying, and just about any and everything else imaginable.
  13. Home depot 6 inch bolt and airplane cable cutters from home depot that I have a second pair for work.
  14. Thank you Glen ai appreciate it. 1/0 oz spinnerbaits?
  15. Casitas or the Citica would be the similiar reels price point wise. The lower end I still believe they're mostly comparable though I have significantly less time fishing with the middle to average price points. From what I've read on the website most people prefer the Tatula CT over any reel below 150 dollars.
  16. I've already got Mike working on this little project for me for about two weeks now. I can't wait to play with my new toy and send yall a review.
  17. 1. Do you find value in being able to fish a variety of water? Absolutely without a shadow of a doubt. 2. Would you pay money to fish private ponds that are more convenient and/or offer better fishing than what you currently fish? Absolutely, I currently do and the fishing isn't even that much better. 3. If so, how much would you be willing to pay per day, week, or season to fish this water? Depends on the size, amenities etc. Does it have boat/yak rental, or is it included, is it open to the public or strictly a fishing lake. Probably be willing to pay upwards of 50 a month for a place relatively close to my house that has biguns and is less crowded. 4. Would you use this website/app? Why or why not? Yes, I think anything you can get that helps you learn or actively go out and fish is worth having regardless of how often you actually use it.
  18. With a tatula being had for 164 dollars on the bay right now I'd probably go that route. I'm not a fan of Abu in general. Personal preference. But my favorite spinning reel is the Shimano Stradic FK
  19. I personally prefer Shimano reels. They just feel better in my hands, it's not a quality of the reel type thing so much as a personal preference for the way it feels. Respectively in their price range you can usually do a coinflip between Diawa and Shimano. The Antares being as good as the Steez, and so on and so forth down the list. It's all about what feels right and looks good imho.
  20. IMHO Shimano Stradic are the flat out best fishing reel for spinning on the market below the 300 dollar price point.
  21. Smackdown is IMHO the best, J Braid coming in at second, and Power Pro coming in at third.
  22. I'm one of those elitist pain in the ***** mentioned above repetitively. Sold all of my manufactured rods and reels, I'm planning on rebuilding everything custom through Mike at DVT, cheapest reel I own now is a Chonarch MGL etc etc. I'm an elitist because, well I have no valid reason I just love the quality rods and reels in my hands. Don't let anyone keep you down from using what you want to. At the end of the day, no one really knows what they're doing while fishing. That's why it's not called catching.
  23. Jj magic instead of the squid or with the squid scent.
