Wells Beach In Maine
I usually use fake worms, but have some small crank bait and jigs.. I also have some green minnow looking things that are pretty heavy and can cast pretty far. If you can think of any specific i will go buy them tomorrow before I leave. I am staying right across from a large retaining wall. at the bayview inn. right between the OLD firestation and the lobster pound.. you know where that is?? Also what is the best time to get out there? when the tide is coming in or out? or is it a time of day thing?? Thanks and sorry for the Noobie questions.. Harpoon

Wells Beach In Maine
Hey all, I am heading up to a condo right on Well beach this coming weekend. I am novice bass fisherman at the moment but wanted to try some ocean fishing this weekend. Couple questions: Does anyone know the area and have any advice on lures and location? do I just fish off the beach I am not sure of any jetties up there but will look when I get there. Also I have two rods setup for basic lake bass fishing. What differently would I have to do to make these capable of catching larger fish? just upgrade the line? I do have a deep see rod my brother in-law bought me a few years ago when he would take me out on his boat but not sure this is a real castable setup. the line looks really thick. Ok I will stop here and see what you all have for me. Thanks as always Harpoon

Couple Catches
Hey Boston, that looks like a nice and active lake. Do you know if motorboats are allowed? could you explain where this lake is? I live in Bradford (Haverhill) MA and looking for some close lakes to tag after work or quick sessions when I can find the time. Thanks alot Harpoon

types of reels
Hey guys, I am looking to learn about the different types of reels there are. From what I can see there are two main types. spinning and Baitcasters, are there others? now my question is why/when would you use one over the other? From the fishing shows I watch I seem to see the Baitcaster used more often. I do have one of each but really never know which one to pick up. Are they made to throw specific tackle or for catching certain fish?? Thank you in advanced for the education. Harpoon

Installing a new transducer
Hey Cat, I did break the man law and read the instructions. LOL It never stated how much below the boat it should hang but stated how high above the bottom of the boat it needs to be. For fiberglass 1/4 of an inch and for aluminum 1/8 of an inch I set mine somewhere in between. ok so check this out. last night i launched the boat in a nearby lake just so I could work on my boat bunkers. ( one of them rolled over on the last retvieval) so I sent the wife and kids out for a buzz around while I fixed it. so I noticed that when she was going pretty fast ( mind you it is only a 40HP motor) there was a high spray coming from the right side. ( right about where i mounted the transcuder) It looked like a jetski driving by.. It got too dark for me to investigate but any ideas why it would do that?? Thanks all Harpoon

Installing a new transducer
hey Slonezp, I wasn't able to get a board since I am leaving for vacation today. I called a marina to discuss this and he said that my boat doesn't have any wood on the inside so as long as the screws snugged tight to just add some of the apoxy to them and I should be good to go. So I did and it looks fine. I wish I had time to snap a pic. I do see where it will be able to bend up if it hits something. I still like your idea and will probably still do it since I want to get the speedo and water temp option for this unit. Thanks alot.

Installing a new transducer
Hey Slonezp, wow thanks alot for the pictures. I didn't see them earlier. It looks like you have a new Humminbird too. Your transducer looks exactly like mine. That picture was perfect I now understand exactly what you were telling me.. what is that white connection next to it?

Installing a new transducer
Ok perfect. thanks. One last question. how low beneath the boat should the transducer sit? as I have it now it sits about 1" below the bottome of the boat. It that too much? Harpoon

Installing a new transducer
WOW, well that is a bit disturbing. I have had Mice in the boat I hope they didn't eat all of the styrofoam. So what and where would I find a piece of Plastic board? a boat shop? and it should be at least 1" thick correct?

Installing a new transducer
Hi all, I purchased a new Humminbird 570. I have a 16' Starcraft Fishmaster for a boat and am installing it on the Transom. has anyone installed one before? I did exactly as the instruction stated. It said to mark the spots for the screws, then to use a 5/64 bit and screw into the transom only to 1". So I taped the drill bit at exactly 1" but when I started screwing it was hollow less than a 1/4" in which was a surprise to me but maybe that is normal, I don't know. I was mounting it to the right of the motor very close to the bottom but not too far according to the instructions. the bottom of it was about 1/4" from the bottom. Please let me know if this is how it should be or if I should select another location to drill. Thanks so much Harpoon

Lip grip tool
Hi all, I wanted to see what you guys think of using a tool like this. I don't have one now but a few times I wish I had only because of the size maybe or the teeth. This is the one I was looking at. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0011558014820a&navCount=1&podId=0011558&parentId=cat90003&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat90003_TGP&catalogCode=IA&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat90003&hasJS=true Anyone have this? and what do you think of it. Thanks all Oh I guess I should have told you what I fish for. Mainly Bass and stripers from the local river.. Harpoon

Humminbird 570
I am soo glad someone posted this thread. I am looking at the very same unit. The specs seem pretty solid for a $200 unit. Does anyone know if they make a kit for this model where I can Mount this unit either on the Bow or at the helm? Thanks Harpoon

Advice on new Fish Finder
Thanks Blade, from all my reading I agree with you. I am trying to figure out what specs I should be looking at and the two that stick out is the "peak to peak watts" and the "beam" either single or multi... do you guys like to extra wide beams on the dual beam models or is it not that big of a deal?? Are there any other specs I should be looking at to help me make a decision? Thanks Harpoon

Advice on new Fish Finder
Hey guys, I am up in Portland Maine this weekend and staying near Cabelas. I went in yesterday for the first time. I was like a kid in a candy shop. the place is amazing. Well I saw some deals on fishfinders but not sure what is the best. I know some of you recommended the Hummingbird 565 which they do have but with a missing power cord for $140. they also have on clearance the 535 for $139 and a 580 for $200 can anyone tell me what is the better deal? I don't know enough reading the box to see what features are better or not. Is it as simple and the higher model number the better the unit? Please asvise quickly since I will be leaving hear tomorrow. Thanks alot Harpoon

My First Bass Boat
Craigslist has been really good for me over the years. Last year I also got my first fishing boat. I scored a 94 Starcraft Fishmaster for $3,000. Was in great shape and the family loves it. I wish you luck on finding your new boat. Harpoon
