  1. When we had cold front come thru a couple weeks ago I switched to suspending jerkbaits and did well.
  2. Joe, just curious, what will be the main uses(s) for this setup?
  3. Thanks Gardnerjigman for the support. I think comments were trying to be helpful so all good. I probably do need to get scale, truth be told everytime I try to buy a scale I find a couple lures I would rather have instead so I put scale back and get the lures I guess I'll just bite the bullet and get the scale so I have accurate info. I thiught the formula I found would be pretty close but maybe it isn't, no harm not foul. Whether it was 3 or 2 lbs not real important to me, most important thing is it was my first frog bass and it is addictive.
  4. No, I use a online Bass weight estimator, since I don't carry scale. I take pick of fish next to pole, then measure spot at home, then use estimator here: http://www.in-fisherman.com/straws-blog/bass-length-to-weight-conversion-chart/#ixzz3lXimYgzc I always wondered accuracy? Is this not correct? Ditto:) It's such an addictive hit. This is how I caught it, it took him a couple tries, I actually thought I lost him. Since I am new the biggest learning curve was learning the patience as you suggest, With a frog, the hits can be quick and explosive so natural inclination is quickly set the hook as excitement spikes. A big no-no as I am learning.
  5. It's hard for me to answer as I have nothing comparable to compare to as I am new to all this. However, reviews are fantastic and it is very comfortable to use. It has a extra fast tip which allows it to cast very far. Although I am newb, the rod is very accurate, I can cast sidearm to get under trees/brush easily and pitch to exactly where I want. Even far casts get me close to spot.
  6. Walleye, great eating fish. We used to catch them up North. Where are the Walleye in VA????? Anywhere around Richmond?
  7. Been trying for couple weeks to catch a bass on a frog. Had a dozen or more nice blow-ups but couldn't land one, most my fault. Tonight I put on a Lake Frog Trailer Hook. Well tonight luck finally visited. Stop by pond for a 1 hour limit after work and threw nothing but frogs. After 50 minutes landed the 17 1/4", 3+lb'er below, caught him center of upper lip on trailer hook. Couldn't have been more happy. About 5 minutes after the catch had another bass hit my frog three times in a row, took the frog each time but let it go. Dobyns 735C Curado 7.1:1 reel 50lb braid Scum frog Frog Trailer hook. All in all fun 1 hr.
  8. I just got the 735C for froggin', pitching and punching. Love it. Walks the dog really easy. Casts like a dream. I have 50lb braid on Shimano Curado 7.1:1.
  9. I love e6x my crankbait rod, 7'1, medium with moderate fast action. Have paired up with Curado 5.4:1 reel and rarely lose fish with it. Great action. However, I never usd another dedicated crankrod to compare it with, but its great for crankbaits.
  10. I may have chance to get to Saratoga Lake this weekend, does anyone have ideas what is currently working, good spots or general tips? Thanks in advance
  11. I went out and had 4 blowups in little over an hour but didn't catch any, but it is exciting when they take that frog. The closest one I almost landed had to be huge because with 50b braid I had to tighten drag and lost fish when I stopped reeling to do this. I had Dobyns 735c rod and thing thing was bent.....I can;t wait to get back down their, hopefully tonight.
  12. My ponds are like this, I find if I hold rod tip up high I can sometimes keep a lipless crank or suspending jerk bait out of weeds/soft bottom. Has worked for me but it frustrating how many casts come up with leaves, sticks, weeds even other peoples old lines:)
  13. Last night had the Scum Frog in Watermellon Seed on. Also use the Booyah Pad Crasher Two. For nights have a black kermy XPS from Bass Pro, haven't tried yet though.
  14. I work downtown and tried fishing Pony Pastures once, didn't have any luck but I am not smallie bass guy so not sure what I was doing even made sense. It looks like a great place with a lot of pools and rocks. Where did you end up going in mountains and how did you do?
  15. Bingo, Ozark Never thought their was fish there. Tonight spent half hour with jig and no luck. Switched to frog and 4 blowups in 1 hr. First one I yanked too quick, 2nd he spit out, third I had on line and had to tighten drag and when I tightened he got off, 4th was nice one who took it under but spit out. I am getting closer but still not landed one with frog yet. Frustrated but still happy with 4 solid blow-ups. Thanks
  16. 1911 chambered in .45, 8 round mag plus one in chamber gives me 9 rnds. I am confident this will be enough to dispatch the treat, especially in tight quarters:) Shotgun might be better choice but Only long gun we have is 10/22 and original winchester. As a side note, I collect 1911's and shoot them at least twice a week, but since starting this whole bass fishing thing my guns have been getting ignored and my range time after work have been spent at local ponds.....I need more balance in my life
  17. I don't ride but know a guy who is a serious touring biker as you describe, he and his touring buddies all had BMW's. Great looking bikes.
  18. Welcome....
  19. Bassguy, I am in Richmond Va and we have been having exactly what you are describing, I have been having success with a swimming jig with Rage Tail Chunk trailer. Up to the cold front jetkbaits were killing it but since the cold front and rains starting last week the jig moderately retrieved have worked. Cranks and jerks died off.
  20. WRB's mention of fountain is interesting because we do have fountain in small pond that feeds larger pond. I never thought of fishing pond with fountain, but yesterday thought I'd give it a try with a swim jig and Rage chunck trailer, casting parrellel to bank. Caught two bass and one catfish in about half an hour:). Nobody fishes this area so I bet fish have seen very few luresBait/line.
  21. Welcome. Be careful this get addictive and expensive quick, I am new also. 30 days ago went to Bass Pro to get bass rod and reel, had no idea of the changes in fishing over past 15-20 years. In last 30 days have bought 3 rods/reels, some new lures and having a ton of fun and catching nice fish. Folks here are great and have been very helpful.
  22. Mike I also don't have ruler or scale so I use this quite a lot to est weight. For size I take picture of fish next to rod, and measure that distance on rod at home then use this scale I found on line: I have a 15" mark on rod and use that as guide as well. http://www.in-fisherman.com/straws-blog/bass-length-to-weight-conversion-chart/#ixzz3lXimYgzc
  23. EZ, I am in central VA and fish ponds with no structures as well. Recently I have had success with Jerkbaits in deeper areas and around shore/weed lines have been using a swimming jig with a Rage Chunk trailer, Watermellon color I believe. Plastic worms have never been good for me, I think its because these ponds are heavily fished by kids with earthworms and minnows so fish are "on to them".
  24. One of my local ponds has two distinct areas, the north part can get deep and I have had all my fishing success here either on cranks, jerks, or jigs around shore/weeds. The south side of the pond is much more narrow, about 75-100 yards long and very shallow. From shore it its only 2-3 feet deep for quite a ways, drops a little than has hump in middle that probably 1 -2 feet deep. I never caught or seen a fish here in last 30 days (central Virginia location). There is a lot of matting and pond scum. In my 10 years living near pond I have never seen anyone fishing this shallow end. With cooler weather here, now in high 50* due to cold front/hurricaine blowing by, I recently saw very large fish in the shallow area, it was at least 2 feet long and I think a Pickerel due to it being pretty slender, could have been a bass I guess. With cooler weather will the bass be migrating to this more shallow area of the pond and if so what lures/presentations would you use to cover this area? Thanks
  25. I just received a 7'3" MH (more like heavy) rod for frogs/pitchin. After using this for a little while I went to my 6'6" med heavy and it seemed so small and light. They I threw my 7'1" med mod-fast crank rod and it seemed like a feather. Being new it was interesting to see how different each was. I will say the 7'3 extra fast threw the bait a mile, since I pond fish this extra distance allows me to hit the bank or edges on other side. I use muck boots to get out in the soft marshy ground or into the water which allows me to better chance to avoid back cast hitting trees/bushes etc. Prior to my entry into bass fishing all my previous was bobber/worm with kids or trout, mostly ultralight and some fly. The poles are all two or three pice and I feel a lot more confident with the one-piece bass especially since I fish a lot of weeds.
