Are there any good all around Medium casting rods?
In your price range you might also consider getting into the LowRider line, All 'round model. It's available in both fast action and moderate fast, depending on your preference.

How much money have you spent on your fishing addiction?
This feels like a trap.

BaitFuel
What I was doing set up for a jig bite, but I agree. I went home and pored some fuel into the bags to marinate!

The Jig Bite - What do you think?
Not sure about how long they will hold it, but weed guard can help to keep the hook pinned once you stick em.

Seaguar Fluorocarbon
Checking back in after some field testing... The 15# Basix is impressive for $10. It handles well and lays well on the spool. Did the real world break test (aka got it hung) and when it finally broke it was at the knot. Tied a jig on it and swung on a bunch will no issue. Have had it around wood, but not a lot of rock. At that, no real sign of frays or damage. Pleasantly surprised.

BaitFuel
Another small sample size here, but I soaked a couple trailers overnight and went out today. Caught 7 or 8, and every single one was pinned really well. I tried to shake a couple and they wouldn't drop it. Much like my MegaStrike, I can't say for sure if the attractant played a role in that or not, but I'm convinced with both that it can't hurt.

How can I approach a small lake?
I'm in south west PA and I'm catching them dirt shallow. Any rock or wood that I find on a bank has a chance to hold fish right now. Lots of bucks. Crankbaits and underspins are shining for me. I can't imagine the females are too far behind, and in my experience the larger ones will come up and do their thing first. The bladed jig is still a player, and if you have the patience to keep a topwater in your hand and fish it slow, the bites are few and far between but are typically pretty good quality. I've also seen success slow rolling a 3.8 on a 1/4oz jig head through any new vegetation that is starting to come up. With that bite, I always repeat the same cast at least a few times after catching one. When they fire, it can be a lot of fun!

One of The Best Of All Time!
What's your hook of choice here?

Wacky Rigs
As far as the o-rings go, it also helps to keep from depositing unnecessary amounts of plastic into the water. I've seen more than a few studies where eating plastics can have a negative impact on a fishes digestive health. GYCB Senkos are the pinnacle of stick baits, but any stick bait will catch fish. If there's money on the line, I'll throw Yamamoto. Any other time I'm throwing Stik-Os.

I hear what you're saying, and do take that into account if I were making a big financial commitment. $10 in this game is minimal risk.

BaitFuel
Searched for this topic with no success... Apologies if I've missed something. Have heard a lot at weigh-in interviews and commercials for BaitFuel. I am a MegaStrike user as far as non-dye attractants go and suppose I'll give this stuff a shot. Has anyone used it? Please share your thoughts...

Storing Garlic Scented Baits
Original bag sealed inside a money bag, zipped and sealed ?? Gambler is my favorite scent... And by that I mean I enjoy the way it smells.

How to get bait monkey off my back?
Sound advice. Avoid debt. Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of quality tackle shops/outdoor stores near me. Do others have this issue?

Ark Rods
@Mike L @T-Billy @DitchPanda I'm wanting to buy a 7'3 Mag MH (Money maker in the Tharp series) to keep down in Florida for my annual visit. It'll only see use a few days a year, but it'll be a rod I ask a lot from. Would you go with a Lancer, or a Tharp?

Small rant - trout comes in tomorrow (PA)
Don't forget about the smell. Keep them off the carpet if you have it.

Small rant - trout comes in tomorrow (PA)
Fair point, but it makes bass fishing very difficult! I buy a trout/Erie combo stamp... It's more cost effective ? And yes, I believe the right (or wrong) official could see me throwing something like a jerkbait and accuse me of trout fishing. Would it hold up or be worth the time/effort, no. Likewise, if I catch one on accident most of the hatchery fish don't survive.

SLX XT Spool Tension Knob
Good idea! I'm a QC inspector and work with fasteners all the time... But it's government work so the simplest fixes don't usually fly ?
-
SLX XT Spool Tension Knob
Once I have spool tension adjusted on a SLX XT reel (usually just beyond the point where there is no side to side play in the spool) it takes little to no pressure to turn the knob. Basically, the issue is that it's becoming looser than I would like during normal use. I have two identical reels. I've compared both and see no missing parts, nor does the pad inside the cap seem to be worn out. I swapped the knobs between the two reels and it seems to have helped, but I'm still curious what might cause this in the first place? Thanks!

No sales on Shimano?
Shimano is often included, just not advertised. If you go through the checkout process you will see it. If you're not certain, call TW to confirm first.

Small rant - trout comes in tomorrow (PA)
Just an assumption, but if they put 2,500 bass in a 60 acre lake it would defeat the reason I chase bass. Preparing and rigging, finding them and figuring them out is the fun part. Catching them is just a reward for the time I put in. YMMV.

Small rant - trout comes in tomorrow (PA)
This is nothing more than me ranting. You've been warned. Tomorrow marks the opening day for trout across PA. It's the day most casual anglers believe "fishing season" starts. They will show up shoulder to shoulder at every body of water that the Fish and Boat Commission has dumped thousands upon thousands of hatchery fish in. Though the congestion and frustration doesn't last as long as recreational boating season, I am always concerned with the impact this has on bass fishing. I'm a guy who fishes when I can. Often this means my time is limited and I need to stay local. The majority of my local bass fishing waters are stocked with trout. Typically the start of trout season coincides with warming temperatures both through the day and overnight. Here's where I have concern and some curiosity. Bass are wanting to move shallow, feed and ultimately do their thing. For the next few weeks, the amount of pressure on the waters will be the highest it will be until the fall trout stock (where we will revisit a similar situation with the fall shallow water bass feed). You may see where I'm headed... The mortality rate from this period of time is high. A lot of anglers intend to keep their trout, leaving no reason to care if their catches are gut hooked. Let them really take it, and I'll land every one that bites! Problem is, they're killing bass, too. Others don't follow (or know) the regulations, keeping anything they catch. And the amount of line and trash that's left behind is completely unacceptable. Some of the rigs I've snagged and pulled up really just blow my mind. I get it, we share the water and they bought a license just the same as I did. If they didn't stock trout they wouldn't sell nearly as many license or rent as many boats. The few local bait shops we have left would undoubtedly disappear. There are also a large number who respect the water and play by the rules. But, I fear the impact on our small local fisheries is both negative and significant and lasts much longer than the few weeks of crowd.

Max flipping weight for rod?
Sometimes I think they must be referring to line diameter and and not actually rated # test. So hypothetically we're talking 30ish # braid? Suppose I should test that theory. I'll buy that rod, spool up with 8# and tie on a 7/8oz plug then report back ??

$49 SLX
Hang on, I better go check my Ollie's!! Heck, I'd even buy lefties for $50!!
