  1. Ok thank you
  2. I'm new to the whole tournament scene and had a question. This may be common knowledge and a stupid question but I was looking at doing the Bassmaster northern open either this year or next and was wondering do I need to get a fishing license for the state(s) that I will be fishing the tournament or is that part of the entry fee?
  3. Thanks guys I may go ahead and give this one a try. That actually sounds like a great idea I usually use a swivel but if I ever run out of swivels for whatever reason or just don't feel like tying one on I'll have to give this a try. The only line I'm confident in using the palomar is braid every thing else gets the San Diego jam
  4. Has anyone used this knot? I can't find an actual name for it except drop shot knot. Was fiddling around on YouTube and came acrossed it just search drop shot knot and it's the first one that pops up with a hook and red line. just looking for alternatives to the palomar knot as the few times I have used fluorocarbon I'm not a fan of the palomar but I don't know any other knot to tie for drop shot.
  5. I have an combo I bought from Cabelas a couple years ago it's the lews laser combo and the reel is acting up. I would like to fix it to give to my son so we can fish together. The problem I'm having is it handle seems to turn in stages... the best way I can describe it is like a second hand on a clock. It will crank like an inch then slow down and bind up crank an inch bind up and so on. It seems to come and go but last time I used it it seemed to be getting worse. any ideas?
  6. Since you looking to throw 1/2 oz I would go 4 power. I would go 704
  7. Dobyns fury Dobyns Sierra st.croix Mojo
  8. I would take the 704 for more versatile then.
  9. It seems your trying to do to much with one rod. Yes people say you can get by with one all around rod but it's just not possible you can't fish senkos on a broom stick like a frog rod and you can't fish frogs on a senko rod it will snap. For a frog rod check out the 735c. I just did a review on it in this forum maybe it will help you out. as for all the other techniques you've listed I would get a 703 or 704 depending on the weights you plan to fish. As with all things fishing it's all personal preference and I'm no expert but I own quite a few Dobyns and have done my homework on them
  10. The 734 has just a touch more bend in the tip but only if your paying attention you'll notice it what weights are you trying to fish? If your gonna be fishing 1/2 or heavier go with a 4 power if it's 3/8 or lighter mostly then I would go with a 3 power The 703 is a great rod
  11. I shipped the jjs back to them and they refunded no problem. And the liquid mayhem didn't lose much so I just decided to keep it. I just thought it was funny the 2 times I order scents at least 1 each time has leaked or busted open and it's only the scents. I've ordered U40 cork seal before never had a problem it's just the scents
  12. For the Price paid: Shimano Curado I $149.99 +$25 gift card + 5% Veteran discount at Cabelas Overall best: Lews Tournament Pro G $200
  13. I recently purchased a few Dobyns rods (Fury, Champion) all of which are great and feel amazing. Very happy with my purchase the one that really is the most surprising is my Fury 735C. I initially bought this particular rod and intended to use it for what it recommends on the rod frogging, small swimbaits, and flipping/pitching. I was pleasantly surprised as to how much flex the tip had especially for being a Mag Heavy. The rod is 7'3" Mag Heavy power Fast action and is rated for 1/4- 1 1/2 oz lures. At first I thought there's no way a rod this stout can handle 1/4 oz but I was not intending on using it for lures that light anyway so I did not pay attention. After getting the rod however I feel that not only is it stout enough to get fish out of some thick stuff as you would be fishing when fishing a frog but if the time calls for it and I know the fish are in there but won't bite on the bigger baits I feel confident to size down and actually do some "finesse" fishing in the the thick stuff, not using light wire hooks or anything but a smaller bait and a small weight. This rod not only has the backbone you would expect with the Mag Heavy power label it carries but also has the tip to throw some lighter 1/4 Texas rigs accurately and a good distance as well. The Fury series has not disappointed yet with its feel and action. Same also applies to the Champion XP series. After handling the rods it is safe to say that yes the power does feel less then what it says. But I wouldn't say a whole power lower like some people have said I would say it's half a step down maybe even less then that (the champion series however feels spot on with its power rating). The rods feel good in the hand I personally added some U40 cork seal as I like the feel it gives me but the naked cork as I like to call it they use feels great, balance well, and are sensitive which the fact that the gods are comfortable and balanced just adds to the sensitivity. The actions are great not to stiff and not to "whippy" and the warranty is on par with the famous St. Croix warranty. Dobyns rods have a No hassle replacement warranty just send your broken rod to them with a check Fury $50 sierra $60 Champion $70 and they will send out a new one if they find that the rod broke because of defects in materials or workmanship they will refund the check. They also have an upgrade program to trade up to a higher level rod. The customer service is friendly and will answer all your questions even help you pick out which rods will be best for your applications. I even talked to Mr.Dobyns himself when trying to pick out which rods would be best. I hope this little review helps answer some of the questions about Dobyns rods that have been popping up lately in the forums that even I myself had about these rods. Thanks to all the forum member that kept recommending Dobyns to me I'm glad I went with them
  14. The local places around me sell the usual, spike it, bang, and if I look hard megastrike. I like the megastrike but last year I started buying different stuff online just to try what's out there. The problems I keep running into is that it seems the attractants can't withstand the ride UPS gives them. Last year I tried JJs magic (great stuff by the way) and when I received the ups guy actually told me "I don't know what you got in hear but it's been stinking up my truck all day" immediately I knew what happened one of my bottles of jjs busted open. Sent it back to TW got a refund no problem I had some other colors that made it so I could still use them. Fast Forward to this year, yesterday to be exact opened up my TW order of rods, reels, couple packs of senkos, and 2 tubes of liquid mayhem and one of the tubes of liquid mayhem the seal at the end of the tube part of it busted open, won't send that one back didn't lose that much of it I just broke out the trusty duct tape and sealed the seam. Anybody else bought scents online and had the same experience? Or is it just me?
  15. French pearl, Pro blue, and purple green apple are my favorites as well. Great jerkbait for a great price can't beat them
  16. I use braid for everything anymore. If I get to where I'm fishing and it's clearer I'll tie on a leader. This year is actually the first year I'm trying a leader. I usually just use straight braid but this year I am going to try a leader. I use to be a mono guy but a couple years ago while I was living in NC I started using braid and quickly switched every reel I had to it. Even spinning
  17. Picasso shock blade or D&M custom baits piranha II with a zoom super fluke or strike king blade minnow. No need for paddle tails on a chatterbait/bladed swim jig the lure wobbling side to side will already give your trailer enough action
  18. That line up looks really solid. The gearing on the reels don't get hung up on it. I did for a while and all it did was give me headaches. You will read some places that for cranks you should get a 5 speed reel and for flipping you should get a 7 or 8 speed reel. I my self have all 7 speed reels even on my crankbait rod if I need to slow down I just force myself to reel slower. If you don't think you can slow yourself down then I would say get 6 speed reels it's a good all around speed and it's easier to slow down then a 7 speed. That being said there are times you could use the extra speed like burning spinnerbaits or lipless cranks over beds you can speed up a 6 speed but your gonna wear your arm out trying to reel that fast. As I always say rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.
  19. @Fox408 For starters a 7' Medium heavy Fast action rod would probably be your most versatile rod (Dobyns Fury 703c) I would start there for your bait caster. For spinning I would go with a Medium light to Medium power fast action rod for weightless plastics, drop shot, shaky head. Those 2 set ups will get you started and can in reality cover all aspects of fishing except for like 8" Huddleston swimbaits. The whole ole point of technique specific rods is cause even tho those 2 set ups will work there are better tools for the job. You could use a flat head screwdriver for a Phillips head screw but there is another tool better for it.... You could use 9 iron golf club to putt the ball in but a putter will be more efficient. Depending on how heavy of cover you fish doesn't matter if you've got a 1lber or 10lber on the other end if your trying to horse that fish out of thick weeds or pads your gonna want a Heavy power rod you would probably break a medium power rod trying to do this. Then to round out your 4 rod arsenal I would get a crank bait rod. Not just for crank Baits but all treble hook lures. Medium to Medium Heavy power and Moderate to Moderate Fast action @fishnkamp North east isn't to far of a drive for me I live in Galena and elkton is the next town north of me.... besides cecilton but I don't consider them a town cause if you blink you've driven past it
  20. Haha yea that's about all we have on the eastern shore is farms, fishing, hunting, and ocean city. No ive never fished there
  21. I got out last weekend while it was nice but this weekend I had some work to do on the farm so I couldn't get out. It was hard to fight the itch yesterday. But my new rods will be in this week so hopefully weather permitting I can get out and next weekend
  22. Was just wondering what the typical size braid you usually put on a spinning reel. I bought some 30lb power pro super slick 8 because it said it's size is equivalent to #8 and I will be using and #8 Leader so I figured I should try to keep main line and Leader close to same diameter. Is this thinking correct? Should I have gone with #20 or #15? Does it matter? Sorry for the double post I pressed submit one to many times
  23. I had a hard time trying to get my rod arsenal down to 5 let alone 3-4. Other lines to look at other then the E6X are st.croix Mojo bass ($130) and the Dobyns fury line ($110). I went with the fury line after hearing all the great things about Dobyns. But to be honest if it wasn't for this forum I would of never heard of them since there's no place close to me that sells them so I would of never seen or heard or looked for them and I would of went with the St.croix. Dont get me wrong I love the decision I made to go with Dobyns. Good rods, Friendly customer service. Actually when I was trying to figure out which rods to get the owner of Dobyns actually helped me pick them out. Along with every time I had a question he was the one answering my question. Plus lifetime warranty and a no hassle replacement plan. If my Dobyns Champion ($250) breaks for whatever reason I send it to them with $70 and they send me a new one
