  1. Unlike Marlin, Winchester and Colt forgot about quality. Some US car makers have done the same thing. I have some old Winchesters and a Colt 45 ACP that are really high quality. Their cheap guns used to be high quality. When you forget quality, the users are the first to notice. Winchester started making junk in 1964 that is why pre-64 Winchesters have always been valued so highly. Winchester recently went back to quality in their bolt action CNC machined high powered rifles with double extractors something like the older ones but maybe it was too little to late, too many excellent alternatives. It is hard to over come a bad name. S&W sold us out a few years ago on the 2 nd. Amendment and practically went out of business until new management responded to the users. Colt did the same and dropped their quality, and down the tubes they went, they've come back with some good single action revolvers, albeit expensive. Gun companies can't make it on govt. contracts, not enough of them, and too much competition. They need the civilian market. I've been impressed with Tarus and their attitude toward the consumer, us, the USA market. They are very pro 2nd amendment. I don't have any but would give them a close look in a single action handgun for example. If I could find a deal on a CNC machined Winchester in 270, I would get one to use. Collectibles, I don't know, their name might not make the new ones worth much.

;D Skillet, in that case, you might want to stick with light wt. aluminum.....and duck Sorry to continue to drift Muddy but I need to share something with anyone just getting into iron cookware. They tell you to cure or season it in the oven at 300* and that is OK if you want to stink up and smoke up the house. My 87 year old Mother-In-Law told me of a much better way. I asked her what they used to do when the pans got too much gunk baked on them and needed re-newing. She said that they just tossed them in the fireplace, got them red hot, burned off the coating and then poured and spread lard on them. Caution: you have to be real, real, careful, lard will flame when the pan is red hot and you don't want to do this in an enclosed space, like a living room. Maybe that is why we see so many old chimneys out in the fields down here... ;D Heat them over any kind of fire, grill, whatever, outside and throw a dollap of lard in the pan and spread it around. If the pan is hot enough the lard will quickly go into the pores of the iron, and make you a nice black cured pan. Keep heating and spreading on the lard with a rag until you have the shiny slick cured pan that you want. I have greased them up and turned them upside down in the grill and cooked them at high temp but putting them directly on a fire works best. I'm the kind who 'duct tapes' down the safety features on chainsaws, lawnmowers, 'kill switches' etc., so you might take care in following my directions on most anything where you could get hurt. ;D
  3. Happy belated birthday! As I recall my 58th was a good year, it's been awhile. ;D
  4. I'm afraid that mountain oysters don't compare very favorably with the spread that you mentioned. ;D Enjoy!
  5. You are right I need to try one of the handguns, 44, 45 or 357. Most of us are over gunned in the brush country that I live in. The deer are useually close if you plan it right. That's one reason archery is so big, they let you hunt all season and the deer are close. Habit keeps me using the 250 99 Savage (inch groups at 100 yds ain't bad), or the 35 rem or 30/30 Marlins. Did anyone mention Marlins, fine lever guns. I believe that it was Elmer Keith who told the story of shooting a black bear with a 45 long colt and the heavy bullet went from front to back of the animal. That is a relatively low power round compared to the 44 mag that will do a lot of damage. I killed a deer when I was about 13 or 14 with a 22 short (nobody told me that I couldn't). The bullet went between the ribs on one side hit the ribs on the other and I have never seen more damage to a heart from the ricochet. The deer was maybe 15' away, never ran a step. Almost any pistol would work if you would take your time and pick your shot. Since CNC there are a lot of fine rifles on the market. Those bolt action Savages are about the most accurate cost effective guns that you can find right out of the box.

Thanks, Skillet, he was one of the best. Talking about all this food. With a handle like "Skillet", you ought to be running a restaurant yourself. I love my own iron pans. That Zydeco, Creole party music, goes along with all the other music from down there and blends in well with all that good food and fun. Fun is where you find it, Me and the Missus need to get back down there. Can't understand why Muddy would hang around 'up noth'.

Boys, you have made me hungry reading this thread, I may have gained a pound or two just thinking about the etouffee. ;D It's more than the food, it's the attitude, I can feel it in this thread, I used to love to just hear ole Justin Wilson just carry on. I haven't been there but once down your way but it was memorable. Need to go again. I'll have to make a list of all of these places for next time around. Now I have to go home and get something to eat. Not as rich as that good stuff that y'all talking about, just country food. By the way Skillet, my dad always signed his letters with "As Ever", and I often do the same thing, he was born in New Port, Tn. Is that a Tenn. thing?
  9. That's about what I figured. ;D And you are right, I can't afford it, how about putting me in your will. I haven't used my blackhawk 44mag for hunting yet either but I intend to. I intend to do a lot of things but can't seem to find the time, got to make the time, got to make the time, not let's see, what was I going to do...
  10. Wally World helps to keep the rest of them honest. Got some long sleeved shirts on sale at Dick's SG for $7.00. Dick's had some good prices on grubs and variety that I hadn't seen also. Need to check back with Wal-Mart to see what they've put out lately...
  11. When I get that shot, I'm going to have it made into wall paper! ;D Take your time John J. and believe me, that girlfriend of yours really doesn't like to camp out and fish. ;D Actually, you are better off that way. Ever try to carry two packs, two sets of fishing poles, two sets of ...... you get the picture, they don't go along to do the cooking anymore! Those 1930's models are long gone ;D
  12. Ed - Western NC Reel close to retirement Engineer with NCDOT, review contract work on State projects, seventeen western counties. Make sure that we meet environmental requirements. Two grandsons (so far) that I intend to kidnap and turn into fishermen, hunters, and general all around sportsmen.
  13. That one has been by before, I think, I know that I've seen it somewhere. Notice how everyone moves away from the back side of the RPG. The backblast will kill you to. It also discloses the location of the shooter. "Round on the way, wait".
  14. Catt: Would you like to own more guns, might take that old wore out pre-64 Winchester offen yur hands. ;D Where did you say you live again? ;D Mine is the slog through the field model, still a good utility shotgun. I have a sweet sixteen Belgian made in that and it is sweet. About all of the birds that we have to shoot at are doves anymore. Would love to trek to pheasant country sometime. And short arms, remember that quote at the end of Quigley Down Under, "Said I didn't like um, didn't say that I couldn't use um'."

    Try this: <paparock@suddenlink.net>
  16. I have six of the ten that you mention in several calibers and several others that you fail to mention. They are all good. In order for me to pick one, you need to mention the use or purpose of the gun. I favor all that I have for various uses or potential uses.
  17. That's a great one! Everyone needs a goal to shoot for, the giant Florida bass. ;D
  18. Thanks for the post RW! They also have the top two that you listed on sale as VHS. They may be older versions but they are good. I ordered a bunch of their on sale VHS's thanks to your post and have not been disapointed.
  19. And the weather, Muddy, we must not have anything to do to get into heated (sorry about the pun, ) arguments about the weather. And celebs, Brittany is going down the same road as Anna Nichole, nothing that we can do there either. Oh, and Troutfisher, you are much too young (and homely) to have a girlfriend. ;D

Fellas I hate to see people become addicted to drugs or alcohol, gambling or anything else. What a waste and heartache for everyone involved. I had an Uncle who drank beer, became an alcoholic and had a series of strokes and died after six years of wasting away in a VA hospital. It was awful, but you know, it didn't keep me from drinking and almost killing myself and maybe others. I got lucky and finally grew up without getting addicted. I had a female cousin who went down the same road as Anna Nicole, following that TV, movie star wanna be celebrity role with not quite the same body or talent. She is now in her 50tys, looks as old as her mother and may have to be institutionalized when her mother passes. We make our own bed and then we have to lie in it. Nobody can out smart drugs, please leave them alone! Girls will think that you are much more handsome without the beer.
  21. I'm afraid that you are right! The Iranians have three Russian subs and some mini-subs that they build themselves. <http://bubbleheads.blogspot.com/2005/05/new-iranian-submarine-not-quite.html> We probably keep a pretty close eye on their whereabouts but there many other ways of delivering a nuclear device. I don't know that Iran needs to sneak or even needs a sub to deliver a nuclear device. Remember Oct. 12, 2000 when the USS Cole was hit by a speed boat? The Ship was left with a gaping 35' hole, 17 sailors dead and 39 injured. The destroyer's "Rules of Engagement", as approved by the Pentagon, kept its guards from firing upon the small boat loaded with explosives as it neared them without first obtaining permission from the Cole's captain or another officer. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cole_bombing> This happened after another unsuccessful attack Jan.3, 2000 on the USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) by Al-Qaeda. These were stupid "Rules" and everyone who had a part in them should have been fired or forced to resign up to whatever level it went. Those were insane "rules". The Military is too smart to adopt rules like that without having them foisted on them by an Administration. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cole_(DDG_67)> What is to keep Iran or their terrorists from running a speed boat or a slow boat for that matter with a nuclear device right up the Potomac or any number of our other ports?

I'll quote myself, The child may be better off. I heard this morning on the radio, and we know everything is true on the radio, just joking, before somebody fires back, anyway I don't have the source of the quote so it's iffy but plausible. The quote: "Anna Nicole had her nanny reduce the formula from 3 oz. to 2 1/2 oz. because she wanted her daughter to be sexy" Anna Nicole's cousin was on there, claimed to be anyway, and said that, "Anna Nicole was wild as a young women and simply got out of hand", and that, "her parents couldn't do anything with her". The guy interviewing him said, "I thought that she had been molested as a child, by the parents?" He said that, "it didn't happen", "that Anna Nicole had made it up because she knew that she would get sympathy from the press who would be constantly writing about it". He said that, "Anna Nicole's mother was a good Christian person". He said that Anna Nicole's parents were working people who would like to raise the child but didn't have the money to fight the case in court. The man was believable but who's to know. The child will likely be raised by a nanny and she may be better off without Anna Nicole's influence, not that Howard Stern is a good influence. It's a shame that celebrities are glorified and idolized to the extent that they are. For the most part they would be better off if they would just, "Shut Up and Sing" or whatever their talent is. IMHO

    I pity the poor child.
  24. Alternatives are fine; however, we can't afford to take anything off the table when dealing with religious ideologues who possess or may soon possess a nuclear weapon. Our government has to be firm with them. We don't have the luxury of following in Neville Chamberlain's footsteps, the man who made 'appeasement' famous. I'm not willing to sacrifice an American City to see if the 'appeasers' are right. Negotiate in good faith, sure. If the Iranians are not willing to give up their nuclear ambitions, then drop a tactical nuke down their chimney before they can manufacture a series of bombs to be distributed to our shores. Frankly, I take them at their word. The result of not doing so is unthinkable.
