BPS brand plastics
BPS Flippin tube and tender tubes are the ONLY tubes I use and have no problems with them. I have tried many other tubes and I always go back to my good old BPS tubes they work and work well. I will use them over ony tube out there. I do use the flippin tube 99% of the time. But they are good tubes. I can catch a fish almost anywhere any time with a BPS tube. However they are the only BPS soft plastic I like. PS my tubes never smell bad.

First GAS Bass Boat Purchase
If you like one get it. Yes the fit and finshin may not be the best, and the other boats come with more stuff, but there are lot of them out there and they guys that I know that have them like them. 2 guys in my club have new ones and they are nice, other guys have new tritons and rangers and they look nicer. every body know a mercedes is better than chevy, but many many people still buy chevys. we all can affort a mercedes. If that is what you can afford and like them get it. You see a lot of Pro carft boats? they are the same boats

Livewell Size?
I have twin 18 gal livewells that made out a rubbermaid countaners, in mybig boat. I can put 5 5pounders in each and the fish stay healthy all day. don't make it to big so that it weighs down the boat, but make sure it big enough that a limit of fish will be ok in there. do you fish tournament? two guys? two Limits? if so make sure it big enough for 2 limits, also check your tournament regulations for live well min size. I Know in BASS rules 10 gal is min size. a 48 qt. cooler makes great Live well, you can get on for $20. and if space is an issue, when your not using it as a livewell you have a cooler on your boat. I am going to be redoing my small boat. 14 foot v hull. putting new decks in it and that is what I am going to use. I will use 2 of them since I fish tournaments where I will have two guys in the boat and one of them is a little small for ten fish

WInd Socks
with a 12 footer you will not need a big dift sock, a small one will do. and yes they are great. I fish Lake erie alot and I never go out ther with out them. yes I said them. I use two of them. I have a 18 foot deep V and it gets pushed bad by the wind so I use two and it slows the boat way, way down and I know I would have never caught the fish I have in the past with out them. If you fish open water and drift, get one you will not be dissapointed. Put it this way, this summer Up on Erie I was dragging tubes for smallies, and the wind was pushing pretty good. found my spot. drifting speed was at 1.3 mph on my GPS with no dift sock out, only caught 2 fish at that speed on 4 drifts over my spot, put one drift sock out and the speed drops down to.9mph caught more fish, but stiil a little to fast. put the second drift sock out ( which is alot bigger than the fist one) and speed drops to.4 -.3 mph and I was catching 2 or more fish on every drift. when you need to slow down a drift they are the ticket. I finished that day with a 3 fish limit of 12lb even, my rider had 12 lb 15 oz. He finished 1 I did 2 in that tournament

If you have used both cable and digital steer...
Are you talking a Digital steer motor? As in a Motorguide digital steer TM, or Minnkota Power drive? If so I am right there with you, DO NOT BUY ONE, but there are MG TM's that are digital and are cable steer, and I say buy those ones. and In what i have used they are the best. I have a Motor Guide "Digital" Tour series TM, 36 volt 109# and its a cable steer motor. and in my opion one of the best TM 's out there I have owned a PD and it sucked. I still have one on my small boat, and when I can afford to i will be getting rid of it. I always feel that I am one step behind where I want to be with it. It has its place, but the way i fish, it doesn't fit my style. Its just toooooo slow in reaction and changing direction. My good friend had a digital ster MG and it is as bad as the PD. he hates it too. same problems. In the past MG had some issues with the quality of their TM's and I was one that had problems with them. Even the new pro series on my father in laws new tracker. Now my MG is a tour series Digital and it is great. In the past 3 years since I got my new TM 5 guys in my club have gotten either new TM' or boats and the 3 guys that bought "digital"tour series motors love them, the 2 guys that didin't get the "digital" mg wish they would have opted for the upgrade to the digital. Like I said all these Digital motors are cable steer. In my opion ,never buy a power steering TM ,lways cable steer TM. Minnkota and Motor guide are both great motors. each has its fans and haters when one you get one you will be happy with, just make sure its a cable steer. If you go Motor guide, I would look at the "Tour series" digital motors, they cost a bit more, but in what I have seen worth it.

Winterizing an Outboard
you need to **** the motor and the stabilizer is not just for the gas you don't use, but the gas that stays in the motor. Just cause you run it out of gas does not me that all the gas is gone. gas stays in the carbs and this is where the stabilizer is needed. if you don't stablize it it could gum up on you and then your in troble. you need to run stabilizer through it even if you run it out of gas. The you also need to fogg the motor PS starting the motor every month or so does nothing to lube it, If you stabilize it and fog it it will be fine for along time,

carb question
How do you know that the jets are to Big? You stated that either of you do not know much about motors. The 115hp and 140hp Suzuki's are almost the same, but the 140 has bigger jets. I have a 75hp suzuki and that is the only differance between the 75 and 85 HP. Suzuki motor cycle shop will not be any help. I have stopped at many many shops and the motorcycle and boat motors don't use the same things and most will not service the other. when you say its dying on the water. What do you mean? when you put it in gear it shuts off, maybe? if that is it. the jest are not to big the just need adjusted and new plugs ( make sure they are NKG plug. suzuki's do not run good on any other brand and the right type). My 75 did this when I used different plugs and the carb where out of adjuztment. put the right plugs in and a little playing with the carbs and it ran great. I have been running suzuki's for over 15 years in an area that doesn't have any suzuki ( outboard)shops.closest is 4 hours away. if You need parts and there are no dealers close by. try browns point mariena google it and their web site will come up. they are the best

Lowrance vs Humingbird
Its pretty much Ford vs Chevy, Minkota vs motorguide, Lowrance vs humminbird. Its all about personal preferance. the two seem to have comperable units in every price range.

depth/fish finder question?
I use a 2005 Traker 175PTX alot. Its my father-inlaws. that depth finder on it sucks. It does the same thing yours does. What motor do you have one it? This one only runs a 25hp, because of HP limited water, I found out thet the transducer keeps kicking up when the boat is running at speed. when this happens it will not read. I have to keep making sure the transducer is pointing down, then it will keep up with the boat.

"4" is too slow and "5" is too fast
that is why I Like a "veriable" speed motor, like my MG Digital. You can fine tune it to the speed you need anytime. I hated that with my older MG & MK I had, one speed would be to much, but next would not be enough

Thinking of buying this boat, what do you think?
Looks like a 16 footer and with that 70hp on it, it should run good around 35-40mph yes it looks a bit ruff, but its 25 years old, and its metal boat. it will last. just make sure the motor runs, and comp is good needs a carpet up date, but you can do that in the off season. I would offer $1500, since it needs a prop. if you go alum your talking $150 for the pro + for washers and prop nut, SS prop will run you $300-$400. $2000 still seems good, see it he will throw a prop in with it for $2000 if the motor runs good i would say buy it

On Board Chargers
one of my boats has a BPS 5/5/5 XPS xharger and its a good charger for the $$$ my other boat has a Promariner Pro Sport 20, 20 amps/3 banks both have the ondemand feature that I like. say batery 1needs more of a charge than battery 2 or 3 the charger will give battery 1 more amps till its even with the other two i Like both, both made by promareiner, have no complants. both boats had the BPS 5/5/5, but one did fail after 3 years. it was out of warranty, but BPS and Promariner stood behind the charger and replaced it with the promariner pro sport 20. The bps 5/5/5 is 5 years old, and the Promariner is 2 years old. They stay plugged in 24/7 when the boats are no out, and keep the batteries in great contion.

boat and tightness of winch strap?
First thing is you MUST make sure your straps are tight as they can be. If the rear ones are tight and the front is somewhat lose the boat still should not slide back. Take all of your winch strap out and reel it in tight. there might be a lot of play in it. Also, what kind of boat is this? on your trailer do the bunks go to the end of the boat? or end a few feet before the boat ends? Do you have those teflon slider on your bunks? On my boat I don't use a strap on the winch. I switched to a cable ( because at a few TM only lake I fish alot I can not power load the boat and I had several straps rip when trying to winch the boat up on the trailer) I also use "boat Buckle's" on the rear. these are the best thing ever. Not only fast and easy, but really makes the boat tight to the trailer. If you have those teflon strips on your bunks. they might need to come off. I know they help launching boats easier, but I have seen to many boats fall off the trailers with those. the boat just slide to much with them. On the bunks. I know when I bought my 14 foot V hull. the trailer had small bunks on it which did not go all the way to the back of the boat. With a 15hp motor 6gal of gas and 2 batteries back there, hanging past the bunks. the weight would help to lift the bow. If i didnot have the bow strap really tight the boat would do what you just said your did. and to make matter worse when you tighten your rear straps down your helping to pull the back down more. I had to move the winch mount forward a foot and add longer bunks that go al the way to the back of the boat. Infact I made them to be 4-6 inches longer than the rear of the boat. THis helps hold the back of the boat steady, and the bouncing stopped.

Trailer and Jon bounce like crazy
just a question. is there mounts for shocks? I know most trailer do not have them, but My grandfather had an old boat with a trailer similar to yours, but there were shock on it. I remeber one shock mount broke and the boat bounced badly so he welded a new mount on it and replaced the shocks and it ran ok. shocks will slow and stop bouncing. just make sure everything is tied down good and you will be fine. Just FYI from a post earlier. you do not always have to "flip " and axil to put larger wheels/tires on the. My 14 footer came with 8's and I moved up to 12's. just mounted them on. didn't have to change anything else but the wheels/tire

SW Pennsylvania Thread
this is one of the best times of the yearto be out there. fish may be hard to find, but once you do, man can you get into some numbers. water is still warm( the yough was 75-78 degrees & and the mon river was 66-70, I would not leave the bass yet for those trout. once that water gets, and stays in the low to mid 60's the bass will really start to put the feed bags on. What lures have you been using? Shad like lures are what I like best right now. Two weeks ago was down on Yough Dam for a few days, and the lake was one fire. 3 big lures were torepedos, flukes & tubes. The smallies would destroy a torpedo when ever there was some fog cover. After the fog lifted I moved to flukes in the shallows. Then tubes a little deeper. Also the Pike just loved the flukes, they also hit the torpedos. on that sat got 3 pike over 30inches, biggets abot 33. infact that sat ( when it was about 95degree in Oct) was the best day of the 3. My dad, me and a buddy went out and boated about 30 fish between the 3 of us. All Bass and pike. and missed just as many as we caught on the torpedos and flukes. my dad had the biggest Smallie a real nice 5.3# . That sunday had a tournament down there and only caught 4 fish, all were keepers and go enough for 2cd place. had about 4-6 get off or miss topwater. need to impove on that last week fished the mon river in Mckeesport for about 3 hours on sat morning (only had a little time to get out) caught 3 bass one LM about 14 and 2 sm around 11-12 all on top water. 2 on torpedo and one on a buzz bait. The biggest thing is to have bait fish in the area. that is what happen on the sat at the yough dam. our one spot had a huge school of bait fish and that is where we caught most of our fish. On the mon river we found bass bustin bait fish at a mouth of a creek and got a few there. this time of year I like to use faster moving bait, that look like bait fish, top water, spinnerbaits, crank baits(shallow most of the time), not to metion slower soft plastic work well, flukes ,senkos & grubs(swimming them) Once the water cools some more ( mid 50'S) I'll move to more jigs, and tubes

SW Pennsylvania Thread
i know what you saying. It was pulled from the web site month ago or last year. Infact I have a master catalong from 2005 that has Pittsburgh as a future site. then It was pull from all the mag and the web site. Maybe its a typo, but in the newest catolg its listed Pittsburgh again. Just getting my hopes up, and you have to bring me back down. Thanks . I go to all the stores and I do like GM, but I have two of their stores closer to me than going to washington, but have been there many many times. I do think cabela's isn't the greatest, but its good. Sportsman's wearhouse is good also. I do However like BPS the best, but making that drive to balt is a just a bit long. I know I can go to harrisburg, but that is a small store and don't like it that much

Prop question
what RPM were you getting at WOT? call another shop, see if they say the same for max RPM's, because that seems a little low. or try to get a shop manual for the motor and see what the factory sayes How do you intend to load the boat? Will there only be you fishing from it with small amount of gear and 1/4-1/2 full of gas? or 2-3 guys fishing from it, all their gear, full tank of gas. If you intend on your boat carring a heavy load I would stay with the 13 and just keep it down alittle when its run with a lite load. That 13 will help get the boat out of the hole better and push it better with a heavy load than the 15 will. If its only going to be you in the boat then maybe a 15 will be good. To be honest I would have your tach check out to make sure its reading right. a 15 pitch seems a little high for a 40hp on a 17foot boat. And force motors are not known as powerhouses. I run a 17pitch on my boat (which is 17"6' with a 75HP) and will use a 15pitch when I pull skiers or a tube

SW Pennsylvania Thread
good news to all that like BPS. i just got my christmas catalog. don't really buy anything out of it, but looked at the page that has all their stores on it, and there is a mark for Pittsburgh ( in washington), It sayes "coming soon". I know the have been trying to open one up here so it looks like it might be soon. no date on when it will be open, or where other than washington. This will be good we will have a BPS and a Cabela's within a 1/2 hour of each other, with a bonus big Gander Mountain in the mix. sounds like the bait monkey is getting restless.

Leaders with Braid
I use 50# spider wire stealth with a Yozuri Hybrid leader. either 25# or 30#. leader lenth is around 2-3 feet with a uni knot
-
mono backing for braid problems
I think you need to adjust your reel. the 50# line is coming off the spool slower than the 20#. If the reel was set for the 20# and never adjusted for the 50# the spool is over spinning causing the backlash. I use 50# spiderwire stealth with a 10# or 8# backing and have no problems

Slowest buzzbait
a double bladed buzz bait with counter rotating blades, you will not beleive how many cheep ones have blades that spin the same way

Life Span of a Trolling Motor
First off I fish 75-100 days a year. 90% out of my bigger boat. and I use my TM alot and use it in shallow water, lots of weeds, rocks, and just for fun the big waters of lake erie. When I bought my One boat ( 1990 Sea Nymph GLS 175) in 1995 it had a 36# 12 volt Minkota PD on it. well that motor lasted one year for me and had to change it. So I got another MK, a 55# that one lasted 3 years, when it suddenly deployed at 40mph, ripped it right off the boat. so I got another Minnkota PD, a 52# power drive. In 4 years of owning that motor I had to change the foot pedal 3 times. when the petal went for the fouth time I said that was enough. I did want a bigger TM, so it was time to upgrade. I ended up getting a Motor guide Digital Tour Series 109# 36 Volt TM. the best thing I ever did. 4 year and not one problem with that motor, and if it goes tomorow. I'll buy another one in a second. I bought another petal for that MK. I have it on my 14 foot V-hull and every time I use it I remember how much I hate it

the most H.P for a 14 foot jon boat
I would say what ever the plate says the max HP should be. I have never had a true" Jon" boat, but I have had a 12 foot V-hull starcraft. It was rated for 15hp max, but a friend of mine has a 12 V-hull sears boat and its only rated for 8hp max. the sears boat was wider than the starcraft, but the starcraft was heavier. I now have a 14 foot V-hull starcraft and its rated for 35HP max, its a short shaft transom, if it was a long shaft it would be rated for 45HP. Right now I am running a 15HP (because of HP restricked lakes), but I will be moving up to a 35HP soon.
