  1. Welcome to the family. jj
  2. I survived it. You can survive it, too. Lots of advances in the last 10 years. My PSA was eleven, and they removed 5 lymph nodes. Four follow-ups show no residual. I'm lucky, I had a good doctor, and The Big Guy Upstairs had mercy on me. That's in reverse order of importance, y'know. ? jj
  3. You can take what Tom wrote to the bank. Pun intended. ? jj
  4. If you fish long enough, you'll find out that you really like certain techniques or lures. Go with them. You'll do a heck of a lot better with something that you like, versus mentally floundering around, trying to figure out what to use next. For me, it's spoons, spinnerbaits and #5 Aglias. But everybody's different. If you don't enjoy it, why fish? jj
  5. I'm fishing tomorrow. Will try these things. Will get back 2 u. jj
  6. I take it that you mean get a braid that is the same diameter as 6 or 8 lb. MONO, correct? Wouldn't that cut into my distance? I've got an old M/F 7' down in that basement. I could try that. ? Wind knots are caused by 2 things: line body characteristics and friction. Both can change rather quickly. That looks almost as small a diameter as Gliss. Thnx ... I MIGHT try it. Maybe. I don't use Gliss because I can't get consistency from the knots. You dadgum people are pushing me back towards superlines again, which is where I didn't want to go. I used Nanobraid 8 lb., PowerPro 10 lb., 832 8 and 10 lb., and Nanofil 12 lb. I used a Nasci 1000, Fuego 2000SH (same spool lip size as BG2000) and 2500 stradics, both plastic and metal. I want to emphasize that I didn't have trouble with superlines UNTIL I really hotdogged it to get that super distance. I had no problems with normal casts. And I also have no wind knot problems with mono when I push the distance, which is why I said I was using Trilene and Stren. Remember ..... the heading on this topic is "No braid, no way". There's a reason for that. Don't go giving me hope and then let me down, now. There was a redhead that did that down in San Antonio back in the 70's. ☹️ jj
  7. Hmmmmmmmm........ Are the benefits they claim actually real for spinning tackle?
  8. I fish a sand pit, and I fish it from shore. Mornings and evenings, fish hit waaaaaay out in the middle. I have a 7' Avid-X spinning rod, ML/F (1/8-3/8) and throw 1/3 ounce spoons and trap-types on 6 lb. Trilene XL and Stren. Yesterday, I set the hook on 8 bass. Five jumped and threw the hook almost immediately. Of the other 3, I got 2. The third one got off about ten feet out. I don't know what to do, but here's some advice people gave me: 1) Rod is too stiff. Get a slower, more flexible rod. ( I don't have one like that anymore. I'd have to buy one.) 2) Use braid. (No, I won't. Forcing a long cast like this just gets me wind knots, sooner or later. I'm old, I'm cranky, and wind knots put me in the foulest mood you ever saw.) 3) Set the hook, but then slack waaaay off, as if you were using an ultralight. The fish won't jump. (I don't know about this one. I think a fish with a hook in its mouth is gonna jump to shake it off, no matter what. But I could be wrong.) 4) Get a more flexible and much longer rod. (The guy who told me this is a fly fisherman, so it kinda figures. But I fail to see what length does for me if I already have a soft rod. Again .... maybe I'm wrong.) What do you guys think I should do? jj
  9. You're not the only one who uses a hobby to help you get better. Welcome. jj
  10. Well, so much for my idea. I thought that maybe you were putting your whole hand ahead of the reel stem. My experience is just the opposite of yours; I have the 7' ML/F Avid X, and it's by far my most comfortable rod. So I don't know what to tell you. Good luck! jj
  11. That is HORRIBLE! ??? ??? jj
  12. If you want a rod that's really light and still durable, you're gonna spend a good chunk of change. At that price level, why don't you consider custom? You can get the light weight, at the length you want, and get the guides and handle you want. This site has a "rod building and custom rods" forum. Try and start a thread there, asking whatever questions that you deem most important. I did that last year, and now I've got a great custom rod that is just what I asked for. jj
  13. Try e-bay. There are a few. jj
  14. If sour cream goes bad, what do you call it? jj
  15. How high can you count? jj
  16. Beat me to it. jj
  17. Why not call or e-mail Daiwa? jj
  18. For me it's purely a matter of how well it casts. In other words, I don't look at the spool; I look at the cast. I don't use backing, so that's not an issue. Naturally, heavy line gives me problems much sooner than low-diameter lines. I have inadvertently spooled myself on the cast with heavy spoons. That's why I keep line with me, not sitting at home. I have noticed, however, that fluoro (InvizX) can get lower than mono or braid before the cast drops off. That really surprised me. jj
  19. Fluoro is InvizX, no doubt. Baitcaster only; I don't use fluoro on spinning. Braid is PowerPro on spinning, and Fireline Ultra 8 on baitcasting, but only by a hair. I just started using the Ultra 8. We'll see how it holds up compared to Sufix 832. jj
  20. The predecessor to the bg2500 (mechanically) was the Fuego 2500SH. I have one, spooled with 10 lb. Sufix 832 and no leader. It's on a 7' M/F Compre rod. Gets great distance, good sensitivity, and I took a 37" musky last fall with it. I see nothing wrong with what you have at all. If I used a leader ( and I've been experimenting with not using a leader to see if there's any difference) I would use 8 to 12 lb line for the leader. But that's just me. I fish where there are pike and musky. YMMV. jj
  21. Now that was a lucky stumble, wasn't it? Lucky for you, and hopefully lucky for us. Welcome to BR! jj
  22. I'm one. The weedless slider head started me on what we now call "finesse" fishing. I started with 1/8 oz. and the 2" crazy tail grubs. Moving up to worms was just natural. Previous to Charlie Brewer, you couldn't have made me use soft plastics for any money. I just didn't believe in them at all. He changed all that. He was practical. I owe him a big thank-you. jj

How fast things change. My Dad said that my grandmother (born 1877) would roll out dough for pizza, bake it, slather it in garlic butter and fennel. Grandpa would fold this over and take it to work as his lunch, sausage on the side. No tomato was involved unless a small jar of tomato preserves went along with Grandpa. Cheese would be grated on the crust in cold weather, but not in hot weather. My Dad said that in 1946 or 1947, Grandpa saw what we now would call regular pizza, with the tomato sauce, cheese and other toppings. He wondered why anyone would make it that way. jj
  24. You're right about the M/F rod. That's where to start. I tried my M/MF and it didn't work well; too much tip give. I use 12 lb. InvizX on a Casitas reel, and 20 lb. Fireline Ultra 8 on a Curado 70. I use the braid in brush, otherwise I use the fluoro. Both reels work great. I have a MH/F rod that I want to try with flukes, but just haven't gotten around to trying it out quite yet. I will, though. Experimentation is half the fun! jj
