  1. What kind of cover are you fishing? Either the 873crr or 894c would fish that weight nicely. The 894 is 2" longer and a little more powerful.
  2. I'm sure a st croix avid m/xf rod would be great for both applications. I like the KLX's versatile tapers too. I have mine on an NRX 852 which is awesome for jerk baits and small t rigs, but it's expensive.
  3. These "diy" spools from ray's studio are the real deal. They transform any reel into a bfs machine. I have one in my pixy and it makes it even better and they are pretty inexpensive compared stuff from japan.
  4. I use 10lb sniper on my nrx852/alphas sv combo for the same techniques you are using.
  5. Congratulations! I'd also take a look at the Kistler KLX and ALX rods. My jig rods are NRX, but I really like my KLX. If my budget was around $200-$250, I'd be perfectly content with KLX. I don't own any ALX, but I've heard they are incredible rods.
  6. I've never paid retail for my NRX's. I got all of mine either used or through the tackle trap.
  7. I have no desire to get a rod that long. For me, transporting and storage would be a pain. I wonder how tip heavy they will be.
  8. 2017 scorpion dc and a kistler klx.
  9. I'd figure out what weight lures you're going to use primarily and what kind of cover and then choose the appropriate NRX (852c, 893c, 873crr or 894c). I'd narrow the reel choice down to either the steez sv tw or the met mgl. You can't go wrong with either.
  10. I use a megabass orochi xx jerk bait special.
  11. I don't have the sv103, but I'm happy with my og zillion 50th for pitching cover. They share the same frame which palms nicely.
  12. I use an alphas sv on a medium/light rod. I prefer casting reels for everything except drop shots and live bait.
  13. I use 30lb, 40lb and 50lb braid with mostly 12lb to 14lb fluoro.
  14. It's one of the main reasons I use a leader.
  15. OP, for a reel made so long ago the TDZ is still one of my favorites. One of my favorite things about this platform is the number of different spool options you have which transform this reel: R+, R, zpi 002, zpi 001, rcs1016, sv105, sv1000, megabass finesse, diy, etc. With these spools you can turn your reel into a long bomber, pitching, skipping or finesse reel. I would definitely upgrade the drag to carbontex. Unfortunately, the finish on these reels don't hold up to well so finding ones in excellent condition will cost you. I picked one up that had the usual rash for $120.
  16. Lefties are the only ones you can get 7.1 gear sets for. Fortunately, I'm a lefty.
  17. I don't own the chronarch mgl, but I do have the met 13 as well as the met mgl. Personally, I'd choose the met because it was shimano's flagship model and is a refined reel. I'm sure the chronarch is a fine reel though. I don't notice a big difference between the met 13 and met mgl, but I've heard the mgl can cast lighter stuff better. I don't use mine for finesse though.
  18. I think you're on the right track. When I fish from shore, I don't use cranks that dive any deeper than 6'. You could use your spinning combo for those shallow cranks and just back the drag off because something's got to give with the trebles: the line, the rod or the drag. I'd throw the buzzbait on your MH and carolina rigs on the Heavy.
  19. I use 30lb with 12 fluoro leader on a mh, moderate/fast rod.
  20. Are you talking about the NRX line? Get the 893 and don't look back.
  21. The Megabass Orochi XXX will be available next month. The F 2.5 Black Themis looks like the model you're looking for. Check them out on the Tackle Trap.
  22. The discontinued PQ was one of my first casting reels. IMO you can't get a better reel for $50.
  23. Which rod/reel are you currently using? It sounds like you're already set up for multipurpose fishing with this combo. I wouldn't frog with a medium powered rod personally. I use a heavy powered rod for frogs because I use it in heavy cover. Unless you're fishing in open water, a medium wouldn't do well pulling the fish through slop and pads.
  24. I don't know if there is an advantage, but I just prefer casting gear for jerk baits.
  25. I also use leaders so I can break off snags.
