  1. Without trying to sound rude, why would you fish on a property you had no permission to fish on? If you did have permission to fish the property and someone else tried to ask you to leave, then they would just have to call the cops or the property owner who gave you permission to get it handled. Of course as they say, sometimes it's best to just walk away to avoid confrontation, but if I was in the right I wouldn't leave unless asked by the property owner. I understand what you are saying, but just my opinion its the guys property and he had no trespassing signs, so if he was shooting at turtles, it's not his fault if someone else was on his property on the other side of the lake. Down here in the south property owners handle their own. Ok back on topic, sorry about derailing from the topic of the thread.
  2. Just ordered me and my girlfriend one off ebay, got the Salt Armour Face Shied. Got her the pink camo and I got the dive flag pattern.
  3. My grandmother use to own a house in Panama City Beach and we would go down there every summer and fish off the Russell-Fields Pier. Years ago we was down there fishing and I felt a bite and set the hook, as I looked over the edge of the pier I seen it. A d**n sea snake, some guy seen me reeling it in and ran over and was like "very dangerous, cut line" as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his knife to hand me. Luckily as I got it onto the pier the hook came out and I just pushed it back into the water.
  4. Don't feel bad, my list is less than that. 1. Alabama Been living in the same county, same city for the last 33 years and fish the same river / same spots ever since.
  5. Yea, it does have rings on the spool for the line, when I contacted them about the spooling, since the specs on the reel said 200 yards of 30lb braid, and their only options for spooling my reel was up to 150 yards or up to 300 yards, so I selected the 300 yard option. They said they fill the reels up, so if it casts weird then I'll def. remove some of the line. I appreciate the observation, the spool is filled all the way to just barely touching the lip. Will have to wait until my rod comes back in since I shipped the new rod back to them today. Still excited about having the reel tho, and really glad I went with the 4500, as it's a perfect size for me, I even believe a 5000 or the 6500 would still been fine size.
  6. My order just arrived in the mail. Unfortunately I ordered the wrong rod, so I immediately contacted J&H and they said ship it back and they would exchange it for the correct rod. So soon as it arrived today I got it from the mail lady and took it straight back to the post office to have it shipped back. As far as the reel, I had it spooled by J&H with 30lb PowerPro Spectra Hi-Vis Yellow braided line, this thing is so smooth and nice. They even sent me a free reel cover, which I thought was awesome of them. Will definitely buy from them in the future. Sorta feel like a kid in a candy store as this is really the first nice reel I've owned and I been fishing ever since I was able to hold a rod and just turned 33 this year. http://imgur.com/a/IQTto
  7. Well my stuff just made it here, reel is perfect got the PENN Spinfisher V 4500 LL and he even threw in a free reel cover for me. Now to ship the rod back and get the 7'.
  8. Yea it shipped already, got free 2 day shipping, ordered all my stuff from JandH.com, I ordered it all on the 31st and he had it shipped out that night and will be here any minute now. I remember those days, I use to order CDs and tapes cassette tapes like that. Thank you, Thanks very much for reminding me, PLUS i'm off work Monday.
  9. So I ordered my new setup and it will arrive in the mail tomorrow, so I had a fishing trip planned for Saturday. Well, after looking over my order again tonight I noticed I ordered the 5'6" rod instead of the 7' rod, now I have to wait until I receive it tomorrow, then wait until Monday because the post office isn't open Saturday and ship the rod back and exchange it for the 7' version. Just totally screws up my whole weekend
  10. Not sure about where you live, but if that happened around here, you can guarantee those bushes would of been lit up with gunfire and would have been wrote up as an accident of self defense. Off Topic Story Years and years and years ago, lets go back like 25 years ago, when i was about 7, my parents use to rent this house and it had a lake on the property that me and my father fished from a lot. We ended up moving out and another guy ended up buying the whole property. He always had trouble of ppl coming thru the woods and fishing on the backside of the pond, it was just a small spread of trees that seperated the pond from a main road with houses, so they would just walk thru those woods and fish at the pond whenever they wanted. It got to the point they was just littering the ground really bad around there and throwing their trash into the water and he has ran them off before, so he got a bunch of no trespassing signs and posted them around the lake and waited. He went back down there the next day and sure enough, 2 people was down there fishing again. This time he carried his deer rifle down to the water and waited until they threw their line out and he literally blew their bobber out of the water right in front of them. Of course they ran off and he went down and gathered all their rods and tackle box for his own collection. He went ahead and called the cops and told them what happened and it being his land cops told him he could do whatever he wanted on his own land, for all the cops know he was shooting at turtles .
  11. Well, I ordered everything yesterday and it should be here Monday, totally opposite from what I started to buy but it's done and paid for so we shall see how it does. Ended up getting PENN Spinfisher V 4500LL spooled with 30lb powerpro spectra TSUNAMI Five Star 7' MH Rod
  12. WOW a 4000 size? I was thinking it would of been like a 6000+, but I never really owned a bunch of spinning reels so size comparisons to me are way off. If it's a 4000 size then the 4500 will be perfect for me. Appreciate it. Well Amazon doesn't accept PayPal so I had to go with J and H, got the Spinfisher V 4500LL, went with the LL version just in case I ever need it in the future, it will be nice to have. Still going to put it on the Ugly Stik GX2 and see how it does. My original quest began when I saw the Fierce in Dick's over the weekend, then after reading reviews I kept hearing Battle 2 was a step up for almost the same price and a lot better, that's when I found the Battle 2 for $83 on Amazon, then someone mentioned the Battle was 2 notches down from the Spinfisher V and the Spinfisher didn't cost a whole lot more than the Battle. So I started searching again and ended up with the Spinfisher, have 14 days to return it so we'll see how it goes.
  13. I did look at the spinfishers and they seem nice. The main reason I chose the battle 5000 was that way I had a good reel for years to come. That way if I ever found myself heading down to FL again to fish off the pier in Panama City Beach I would have a decent size reel to handle whatever bit. I have noticed like you said, everyone says how heavy they can get and how tiresome they can become if fishing for long periods of time. I still consider myself semi young, 33 years old and have never got tired of fishing or casting. My longest trip fishing non stop was 18 hours on the Dan Russell Pier in Panama City Beach few years ago, only stopped fishing to watch this older man named Doub pull in a 12ft hammerhead from the pier, then when he walked it down the pier to the beach we got on the beach and picked it up and loaded it onto a little red wagon. Basically just looking for something I could reel in big 40 - 50+ lb cats on, big stripe (as we have some pretty big stripe here in bama when they are running by the dam here) so I was basically wanting a good strong setup, you think the spinfisher 3500 would handle 30lb braid with a 40-50lb blue cat on the end? EDIT: Bought my GF this setup from wal-mart: http://www.walmart.com/ip/33588644?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227023357979&wl0=&wl1=s&wl2=c&wl3=40971376352&wl4=pla-78913930592&wl5=9012466&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=33588644&wl13=&veh=sem and was looking to get a PENN reel about the same size, I KNOW the tiger is mainly all plastic so it's not as heavy as the penn reels, but I would still like one about the same size as that. I know the smaller PENN reels will be more powerful than this tiger setup, but i've never liked the look / feel of a small spinning reel in my hands. NOW you have me looking at nothing but the spinfisher V, now I really can't make up my mind on which I would like to purchase. Talked with Josh at JandH and it seems the spinfisher V 4500 is going to be my best bet, so most likely going to pick that with the Ugly Stik GX2 7' MH rod and 30lb spiderwire stealth.
  14. The fierce did look good, I liked the idea of the LL version with the flip switch, but it seemed every review I read pointed to the Battle 2, then I read an article last night about "Spinning combos for the general fisher" and as I read the article they picked a setup for the general fisherman with no target fish in mind. They suggested the Penn Battle 2 5000 with a 6'6" or 7' Ugly Stik GX2 rod, and while I had a little extra cash (Doesn't happen often) I figured I would go ahead and buy myself a 2nd setup, as I currently use the Black Max combo I bought from wal-mart a few years ago for lure fishing. So I was looking around and found on Amazon the Battle 2 5000 for $83.23 and the Battle 2 6000 for $83.49 so only a 26 cent difference in price, was just wondering if I did pick up the Battle 2 6k and used it for my bait setup with 30lb braid on it, I would have myself a decent setup if I ever traveled back to FL to fish from the piers there like I use to, but also didn't want to seem like I was bringing in a shark reel / rod to fish for cats at my local river where I usually fish.
  15. Went to dicks last night to look at Kayaks and ended up looking at reels also, saw the Penn Fierce II and it looked nice. So today I was looking around online at reviews and such and seen that everyone said go with the Penn Battle 2 over the Penn Fierce II, I tried looking online but can't really get a good comparison of size between the 5k, 6k, and 8k. As I use the Black Max I bought at wal-mart several years ago for lure fishing I will most likely use the Penn reel as my bait reel or possibly a 2nd lure reel. Will most likely be going for cat with bait or stripe / largemouth bass for lure, was wondering if I would need the Battle 2 5k or 6k and how much bigger is the 6k? Will also most likely be using 30lb spider wire for the line. Also thinking about putting this reel on a Ugly Stix GX2 6'5" or 7" med-heavy rod Appreciate the responses if anyone has used these before and could give some insight to them.
  16. Went up and looked at the Shadow Caster tonight, man it's a monster. 12'3" 98lbs 35" across, that was the only fishing kayak they had in stock and I believe I'm sold on it, Will now wait until the prices drop which should be any moment now and I'm buying it.
  17. That's where I keep hearing different stories, the 2lb one that comes with the Talon and the one they sell at Wal-Mart, I keep hearing stories of ppl claiming they are 300+ lbs and the anchor holds them just fine. Going to go this weekend and look at them in stores but at this moment I got my mind set on the shadow caster and hope it goes on sale soon.
  18. I do have a Cabelas, Dicks Sporting Goods, Academy, a new Field and Stream store, Bass Pro Shop. I'm sure as the fall / winter hits I can find some deals on craigslist, but for something like this being my first I will most likely be going to a store and buying one brand new. As I mentioned earlier, my dad was looking at them last year and Dick's ran quite a few of their $500 - $800 yaks for 50% off during the winter, so if I could grab that Field and Stream Shadow Caster for $400 I would def do that probably. Another question I do have is the front rod holder that sits on the swivel, is the primary purpose for that just to hold a rod while I'm paddling, or is it more of rod holder for live bait fishing? That's what I'm thinking, even on a bass boat I mainly stand and fish, I hardly ever use the seat, but with a bass boat the seat does sit up a lot higher than a kayak, is there any downfall to sitting in a kayak and fishing? or can you just as easily fish sitting down as you can standing? Mine will most likely be transported ontop of a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a luggage rack on it, going to put pool noodles on the luggage rack for padding and just strap it down that way. Most likely just about every time I do go fishing, my gf will be going with me. As I mentioned it's our main river here right beside the Lay Dam where our power comes from and it's 100 feet deep in some spots on the river and the bass masters are usually held here. So for the moment it's not like i'm going to be in tiny creeks or in a pond fishing. It's a public place where hundreds of boats are launched from and they have a few piers ppl can fish from (small piers along the bank). I will most likely just drop it in the water while standing on one of those piers beside the boat launch and while she fishes from the pier I will just hit up around the bank where you can't get to by walking and fish the weed beds for bass or paddle out a bit where ppl can't reach and drop a line down for some cat. Guess it's different for me since I've never owned a kayak nor fished from one, just keep seeing reviews about "It's not fast" or "It won't win a race", well I'm not trying to race, I'm just out on the water fishing by myself around the weed beds and peoples docks / piers where other ppl from the bank can't reach. So slow and steady is just fine for me I'm not in a hurry to get anywhere, like they always say my worst day fishing has always been better than my best day at work, I'm just happy to have a line in the water. But yes, the anchor was something I was looking at, I know they have the 2lb folding anchor and the Field and Stream Talon comes with one of those and the mentioned front rod holder with swivel and 2 flush rod holders behind the seat. But the Shadow Caster comes with 2 flush rod holders behind the seat, 0 front rod holder with swivel, and no anchor system, but is considered a stand and fish with a standing assist strap and the seat folds up and spins out of the way.
  19. That's what I've read on all these yaks, even the $800 Shadow Caster I was looking at. I know the kayaks hold an advantage of getting places boats can't, but my main use of this will be at our main river here to just fish around the bank where u can't walk. It's a local public boat launch above our dam here and below our dam where hundreds of ppl fish from the bank. It's nothing but weed beds for bass and I will be able to paddle out of everyones casting range and fish straight down for cat. The other thing, I'm only 5'7" and weigh like 180, the shadow caster is like 12'3" at 98lbs, but seems to be real easy to stand and fish. Is standing in one easier than sitting and fishing?
  20. Went fishing the other day, first time in a little over 3 years now. Didn't catch anything, but let the GF catch a bunch of bluegill and she had a blast so worth it. With most of my hobbies in the past few years, I thought I wanted to get into something and never really do anything. Kind of like my drone / RC helicopter hobby a few months ago, bought a drone for $700 flew it twice and sold it for $575. Now I'm looking at getting into kayaking as I just don't have the funds for a bass boat, even tho my dad owns a boat, he hasn't put it in the water but once in 6 years now. He was also thinking about getting one (go figure, owns a brand new bass boat but still wants a kayak) but it would be fun for both of us. Was thinking about going for under $500 starting out. Wal-Mart has the sun dolphin 10 foot and 12 foot also my local Field and Stream store has the shadow caster and the Talon kayaks. Was thinking about waiting like another month or two and see if they drop the prices a good bit when it gets colder. Cause I've seen dicks sell theirs for 50% off during certain months and a $500 kayak for $250 would be nice. The shadow caster is $799 right now, but has no front rod swivel and no anchor system, weighs like 98 lbs but reviews say real easy to stand and fish. Also few reviews said weak hull as they drug it across gravel or concrete boat ramps and got a hole. (isn't that common sense? Plastic vs concrete) The Talon is $549 with front rod holder / swivel and anchor system built in, weighs like 68lbs, but some reviews say u can't stand, some say they did and it's great. Looking for a sit on top model as I heard those are easier for first timers. Also keep seeing reviews saying "I won't win a race with this kayak" I'm fishing, not trying to break some worlds fastest speed on water. Guessing these reviews are from first time users? What would you guys recommend? I'll be using it mainly on the Coosa River either above or below Lay Dam as I only live like 15 minutes from it. Also with that said, what's good kayak etiquette for larger rivers like the coosa? Above the dam where I'll fish has one spot where it's 100 ft deep and it's usually crowded with boats speeding up and down the river, but I'm not paddling out in the middle. I'll most likely launch it from a pier beside the boat launch the county built for ppl to fish from and fish around the bank.
  21. Appreciate the response, makes sense. I was just figuring the spool tension knob done that and that was all that was needed, but I guess a 2 system like that makes it easier for fine tuning. In my opinion I don't really see a lot of this stuff that time and technology has made really be a huge help. Of course everyone wants an easier and better way to do things, so far my personal best was when I was 6 brought in a 9lb 8oz bass on my old zebco 30/30 with a tore up junebug worm my dad threw in the bottom of the boat when he put a new one on.
  22. Years ago I found the Black Max rod and reel combo at Wal-Mart so I picked it up, being mainly a spinning reel type I never used it much. Here recently I been wanting to get back into fishing and had a few questions about the rod / reel combo. I noticed it had Drag Star, Spool Tension Knob, and a MagTrax Brake Adjustment Dial. I know the spool tension knob is for the lure, you usually set it to where the lure slowly falls to the floor, what's the Brake Adjustment Dial and the Drag star used for or what setting should I set it to? I live here in Alabama by the Coosa River and I usually fish below the dam here and we have bass, catfish, big stripe bass, I usually don't really fish for one fish specifically, just whatever bites usually on my pearl white super fluke.
