If You Could Ask Hank Parker A Question
Which fishing technique in your opinion seem like a local thing in one part of the country, but once found by tournament fishermen spead the fastest nation wide?

landing net?
I have my 5 yr old son using a spincast ultra light so I make sure I have one on hand. Plus he likes to run and grab the net when I catch something, his way of getting in on a bigger fish.

Feeding the Bait Monkey
Hi I'm new to this site also, the thing about a kayak is the limited room for tackle. I think you'll have to pay attention to weather conditions as far as what you take onboard with you, it could change from day to day. But as far as tackle a green pumpkin tube with a 3/8 head might serve you well. I take it your going for smallies?

Would like an experienced guess
I fish Houghton on our family vacation in July. My home lake is lake St. Clair. Amazingly never caught a smallmouth, but I only shore fish at St. Clair.

Thanks for the responses I'm thinking is was maybe just 6 or 7 pounder combined with a failing drag system. But the great thing about this site is I'm expanding my knowledge of techniques so maybe I can get on bigger fish more consistently.

Would like an experienced guess
Well I was just trying to get an educated guess from guys that have caught bigger fish more often than me. Best that I've caught and weighed is 4 1/2 lbs. It bounced off the top lip of boat when my spinnerbait got out of its mouth. Now being that it was a lower end baitcaster drag being maxed out may not mean that much. But I do know what I saw, a largemouth and as far as how far it lined out you don't get to play tournament paintball without knowing distance quickly. Now I was a little bit in shock/amazed at line spooling out. And that reel did break the next year. And I like I said little experience in catching anything above 4 lbs. So is say a 6 to 8 pounder capable of doing that? I've slightly upgraded reels since

Would like an experienced guess
A few years ago I like many have, had a big one get away on me at the boat. It was on my first baitcaster set up a daiwa twitching bar reel with a daiwa megaforce 6,6 MH rod with 30lb braid. When the fish hit it went from one side of the boat and underneath and shot out the other side. Now here is where I'd like the more experienced bass fisherman's input. I had my drag maxed out and line was flying off my spool about 25 yrds before I thumbed the spool and my rod tip and handle at that point facing the same way toword the fish. I did get a quick look at it before it spit my spinnerbait at the boat it look like it could have eaten a 2 lb bass. How big of a bass do you think it was? One of those things I always wondered about, it was at Houghton lake in Michigan.

Any michigan guys here
Best 1 fish day ever. My wife my son and I went to Harley ensign to fish, after a little while my son started getting bored like any 5 yr old would. So I put on a chatterbait I let him pick the color (white) and started casting and held the pole and let him reel, he thought the pole shaking was so cool. Then it stopped I thought he was reeling too slow and got it stuck in the rocks. So I have him back up and I give a little tugg and the line starts moving to the right pole, starts bending, and before I could turn to my son. He's running and yelling mommy we need the net. 29 inch pike the rest of the day was me and daddy got a big fish.

What's your follow up after spinnerbait?
Well this is the only adjustment that I haven't even thought of doing. Up sizing and burning it. All the other recommendations for slow rolling, slight color change, blade change, yo-yo, hard rips and kill it have been done. I'm thinking I'll have to work on keeping a senko rigged up by all the info you guys are feeding me. Which also trying to be proficient at senkos this year too. It just gets to wears on you a bit, when you go and put your best spinnerbait skirt on toss a nice long cast. Don't get me wrong me and bass have had some fun times. But having days when they don't even notice me. And I see all the other fishermen hooking up, I'm just tired of the interest and then having to deal with commitment issues. Now I'm going to watch fishing shows and eat ice cream. If you didn't get the humor that your fault not mine.

What's your follow up after spinnerbait?
I shore fish in lake Saint Clair in shallow water 4 to 5 feet deep. I have a good number of days when I'm getting a few followers but no takers on spinnerbait. After slowing retrieval, adding trailers, and downsizing from 1/2 oz to 3/8 oz still just followers. I've tried weighless T-rigging swimbaits, but casting distance becomes an issue on windy days. While I have picked up a few swimjigs for this year and plan to try those for a follow up. Just wondering if a spinnerbait is the lead in your one two combo whats your most productive 2nd part of that combo? I'm trying to put together a progressive plan instead of just guessing and running scatter shot though my tackle box.

fav cheap polorized glasses
I have 2 pair of bps sunglasses, smoke lens I use for everyday sunglasses. The amber lens I use for fishing. I've had them for 3 years now, other than tightening up the screws every few months I've had no issues.

Swim Jig Preference
Going to be my first season trying out swim jigs. Picked up 3 2K deposits, 3 lifted jigs 38swims all 3/8 ounce. Want to add something to the arsenal, seems on calm sunny days the spinnerbait isn't as effective for me. I shore fish and a 30 to 40 yard cast gets to maybe 4ft deep.

The real question is are you going to make the web shooter sound when you cast it?

If they had the hulk I'd get it for my son. Even though I would hear hulk smash on every cast.

Any michigan guys here
Finally got to throw out some lines for the first time this year. Went to Brandonburg park didn't get anything, but I wasn't expecting to water still a bit cold. Got to try out a few things the bait monkey made me get. Even got the wife to throw something besides a spinnerbait, it was only a chatterbait (babysteps). Well it felt good to get out.

Winter tinkering ideas
- Head scratcher
I did offer up some stuff, plastics and line but he kinda brush the offer off and said he was obviously doing fine. I got about 5 bass he easily got 10. So I really couldn't argue with him. It just amazed me how what most would consider a wore out beat up set up was hold up to all those fish.- Head scratcher
Oh I'm not a gear snob but I guess trying to figure things out is why I like fishing. But things like that make you remember to not discount other people's ways of doing things.- Head scratcher
This is just one of those things that sticks, as far as a how a fishing day went. A few years back I was fishing at my normal spot and an older gentleman was down about 30 yds. I was doing ok but he was just killing them. After awhile I went down to say hi and see what gear he had. I was puzzled at what I saw a spinning reel on an old and I mean old k-mart spincast rod, with the tip broke off. What looked like 4 different types of line lime green braid, red cajun mono and 2 types of clear line Albright knotted together ( side note thats mad knot trying skills ) and a spinnerbait which the barrel swivel for the blade looked rusted/frozen and maybe 8 strands left on the skirt. Has anyone every seen anything where you get out fished by someone that looked like they got their gear out of a garbage can. That will make you scratch your head.- Giving up on a lure or color...when or how to decide?? The
Like a lot of people hear I've amass a descent number of spinnerbaits. Over time I've taken ones that weren't productive and swapped skirts, blades, swivels, added trailers. I don't really give up on a bait just see if I can make it slightly different than what everyone else is throwing. And have them organized form white to black, makes it easier to find that sweet spot the fish want. - Head scratcher
