Hey guys. I have a friend who's just kind of starting to get into fishing. He has a nice casting set-up, but his spinning set-ups he got at a garage sale and are pretty beat up. Anyways, I'd like to get him a decent combo for Christmas. He throws a lot of smaller cranks, smaller jerkbaits (KVD 100) and smaller Keitech's (2.8 and 3.3). Personally, I have a lot of technique-specific rods that I use (and many time I use casting rigs for with some of these techniques). What one spinning rod would you guys recommend that can handle these techniques? I see the Sierra's are on sale right now for around $120. How about a 703? Or 704? They also make a micro guide version as well. How would those fare with braid/leader knots? Any other suggestions for around that price?

I use 10# 832 Ghost with 8# fluoro leader.

I would just rig it on one of these. Man, it would slither through any cover. Unmatched action to boot. Pretty much fished it like a Fluke/Slug-Go.

I have the Frog Rog that I bought maybe 3 years ago. I've tried 'upgrading' my frog rod with other rods since then, but always find myself coming back to the ZX. It's a great rod. It's a great rod. I thought I read once that Lew's actually made these rods. I could be wrong, but I thought it had been confirmed by someone. Anyways, you may wanna give the Lew's TP-1 Black a look. What is your budget?

I bought a Kistler Helium 3 a few years back. 7'1" med-heavy. I use it exclusively for Texas rigs. To me it feels as, if not more, sensitive than my Expride and Orochi.

Ya know, I've been wanting to try the rattlesnake, but always forget when I place an order! Majority of the time t-rigged, unpegged. But also on a shaky head.

I started fishing the Grande Airtail Rattler a few years back. I've caught a ton of fish on that bait.

Has anybody else ordered these yet? Just like the traditional 1.5 squarebills, but now with a single hard knock rattle inside. This this is gonna be killer in some of the more stained/muddy lakes I fish. The hooks on these seem sharper out of the box than the regular 1.5. And the hooks also seem a tad smaller.

Oh for sure. TN is one place I've contemplated moving to in recent years because you DO still have smallies. I was talking more south..

Smallies are the one thing that's kept me from moving south my whole life. I love being able to catch both black bass and brown bass. Smallies are so fun and MEAN. Largemouth on steroids.

Nobody has asked the question yet but, what's wrong with smallies??!

So sad to hear this. Through junior high and high school, all I ever asked for my birthday was In-Fisherman subscriptions (and Bassmaster magazine). I learned a lot from Al, Ron and company. Godspeed, Ron.

How much does Tatsu stretch compared to Sunline Sniper?

Yeah, I fish all 3. I'm sure I'll still fish the full size one since it's been a staple for so long. But I really like the medium size. The baby will always have a place for me, especially for smallies on a shaky head.

KVD is one of the good guys. Have talked to him a few times. Another is Wheeler. Talked to him once and you could tell right away that he's a genuine guy. JT Kenney is another.

Have you tried the new mid-size? Not sure I'll ever fish the larger ones again.
