Probably a rookie question...
Drag was at about 95%. So I was ticked and set it down. Got back to the dock and picked it up cussing it out and it was working perfectly. I don't understand but I tried for at least 90 seconds to reel it and the handles spun around normally and the eyelet went left and right like normal but the reel refused to take up line. Weird.

Probably a rookie question...
I have a brand new bc SLX reel and took it out on the boat today. First 20 casts or so it was fine. Now when I reel the eyelet is going left and right but the spool is not moving and taking up line. What gives?

How do these 3 boats rank from heaviest to lightest?
I am looking at buying a used boat for bass fishing. I am ignorant to many things to consider when making a selection and at the moment I am thinking about weight. I am looking at something in the 12-16 or so foot range. Probably not looking at a fiber glass boat but some of the nicer plastic 2 man boats, a jon boat with a casting deck and storage built on and then some of the smaller bass trackers interest me. I have uploaded a picture of each style as an example. I would definitely be using a trailer so it's not like I would have to lift something into a truck bed or onto a utility trailer. But the vehicle I would be pulling it with isn't exact new and I do not want to wear it out. But for my education based on the style, body materials and such how would say these 3 would rank from heaviest to lightest?

Looking at buying a boat, is this going to be a problem?
I figured it was something like that. Been trying to read all I can about what I should and shouldn't get and what I should take into account. For this particular boat it comes with a 40 HP motor on it. Would a faster motor (vs a slower one) help with this possible issue?

Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean "getting up on plane?" I own a pontoon and this is my first experience into small bass boats.

Looking at buying a boat, is this going to be a problem?
I am looking at a cheap boat option for my family. Primarily for me and my 2 sons under 8. I am looking at one locally and came across one that might fit the bill. It appears he/someone rebuilt the back and middle section with some sort of wood. Asking him about it he said it is a "composite board." My first concern was not so much the look of it but would it be slippery when wet because I did not want one of my sons to be standing back there casting and slip and falling in. The other question I had is would this hold up over time or is there a high risk it could warp? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

For something like that is there restrictions? I assume I couldn't get a $10,000 item and save $1,300 LOL

Is this a good, cheap idea or just a bad one?
I do not envision re-stringing while out on the boat. I could possibly see doing it before a session if I figured I would be doing more stuff that would work with the same rod and the same reel but may be more of a FC kind of thing or more of a braid deal. I could also see doing it if I wanted to evaluate a new line when I could just pop a new spool in or out. Again, just an idea I am kicking around. If I heard something like there is a technical reason it wouldn't work or would cost a lot I would not consider it. Again, just something I was thinking about.

So "spool assembly" is the technical name for the part then?

Mono backing opinions?
Assuming we are not just talking about a BC reel you are going to fill up with mono anyways what are your thoughts about first applying mono backing? Is it just a way to save some money? Do you view it as something a "serious" fisherman would never do? Are there certain presentations or main lines you'd NEVER put mono backing on first? ANY chance of reducing the performance by using backing? Just curious as to people's thoughts on the matter. I've always been a put 100% main line on the reel guy and the other day I had a guy throw line on a new reel at the store for me and without saying anything he put mono backing on. I was kind of upset I wasn't asked first but then I figured I perhaps should try it out and see what I thought.

Is this a good, cheap idea or just a bad one?
Well I will have to think about this a bit. Besides the "hassle" I assume this would work fine in theory? Are all SLX spools the same? Meaning are they all the exact same spec and would work flawlessly in the 6:3, 7:2 or 8:2 reel? Looking online I could not see to find a specific link to order from, do you have a URL I could check out?

Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
Forgive my ignorance but what makes these such a hard find? Were they a limited run? An older model that is just hard to find now? Just curious.

Is this a good, cheap idea or just a bad one?
I am saving up for a boat for me and my 2 sons right now so my wife isn't going to approve of me spending a lot of personal fishing gear right now. I bought a Shimano SLX reel for the new Dobyns champion 734 I bought. While messing with the reel I popped the spool out and had a thought. Being on a budget I can't just buy 4 or 5 more rods and reels to match different presentations so could I buy another spool with a different type of line on it? I've got plenty of different rods that can handle a wide array of presentations easily enough and this particular reel is a 7:2 so I could do a lot of different stuff with it but in my eyes the problem is the line. Some presentations are much better with braid and some are much better with FC. Could I buy another spool and have one rigged up with braid and the other rigged up with FC? Again, I am confident I am not the first person to have this idea but I would love some feedback here. Other than the "hassle" of having to cut off your existing bait, take out the current spool, pop the new one in, thread the line through the guides and retie a bait on is this a sound idea? This is all assuming I could find and buy an SLX spool at a price that makes this a reasonable idea. Obviously if money were not an issue I would not even consider this option. Thoughts?

Do you use a new reel right out of the box?
If you buy a new higher end reel do you spool it up and use it right out of the box or feel you need to lube up any particular parts or other tasks on it?

When to use a jig vs soft plastic vs shakey head?
This is the kind of thing I was looking for Russ. Not rules so much just general guidelines or principals to adhere to. Thanks again Russ! That makes a lot of sense regarding easily being able to make drastic adjustments to see what's productive or not.

I have been reading this post. Talks about how to jig but not when to jug versus pitching soft plastics and such.

2 trolling motors on small boat?
My buddy has a 12 foot plastic bass boat that we are going to trolling motor on. Ideally should we put his motor on the front of the back or is there no difference? For additional speed we thought about bringing my trolling motor as well. Is there any harm or anything to consider when putting a trolling motor on the front AND that back? I can't see them somehow working against each other or causing a problem or am I wrong? If one motor was stronger than the other should the more powerful one go on the front or the back?

When to use a jig vs soft plastic vs shakey head?
These 3 presentations are new to me and I am going to make myself learn them this year. My question is when to use each? In my eyes a shakey head is a bit different that the other 2 but be it in grass lines or brush piles or docks what are the general rules when to do each of these?
