  1. Trying to get into jig fishing and have a question about the presentation of it. Do you pretty much always need to fish it to/into structure and such? Just short flips or somewhat vertical targets? Or can you be out on a flat, fan cast around but obviously a much slower presentation? Or is is specifically a deal associated with cover? Can you jig fish from the bank or much more a boat application?
  2. Went to buy a bag of Zoom trick worms today and noticed some bags labeled the original trick worm and others the super salt variety. I understand that higher salt content allows it to sink faster but I was curious for a trick worm which was wtter to go with or offered more usage in different situations and why?
  3. Some goodness from Mike arrived yesterday!
  4. I hate to ask but does anyone else have an opinion here? I understand that some people would say it's not as necessary on a moving bait like lipless rod to have a nicer reel but all day long your chucking it and I can see wanting something smoother. I can also I understand on a frog/jig rod having a better set up. For jigs there isn't a ton of serious retrievel, unless bringing back in a fish. But I can see frogging and what can be difficult retrievel. I'm just torn and if anyone else has an opinion that would be great. Thanks
  5. I was forgetful and forgot to take advantage of the TW Memorial Day sale. Do they do anything for Father's Day and if not does anyone know when they traditionally do their next sale? Does anyone know if they do price matching? I wouldn't bother some cheap stuff like lures but I'd love to do it with pricier items like rods/reels.
  6. I've got enough in the budget to upgrade to a better reel on on of my rods, the question is which would be better to do? For now I am not wanting advice which reel to go with or what line to put it on. I have a Dobyns Fury 705CB that I use for moving baits like lipless and small cranks. I also have Dobyns Sierra 735C that I use as a frog and jig rod. Which of these two rods/presentations would benefit more from a better reel? (This of course goes under the assumption that my two existing reels are of the same age and quality and the correct gear ratio.)
  7. Either better for zoom worms like trick worms or ol monsters? Super fukes?
  8. Besides being completely owned by a small fish or feel like your fishing with a broom stick what signs would you need to say a rod is too light or too heavy for a situation or presentation? I think if a buck bass was doubling up your rod that's one sign it's weak but would that speak more to the slow action of the rod? I guess I'm asking because I'm in the market for a new rod. I may get a few brief opportunities to fish a few specific ones but not long enough to catch several fish and determine if I am missing hook ups because it's too strong or weak. Just want to get this right the first time.
  9. So if I was definitely going braid or definitely going FC would that perhaps change which I should go with?
  10. I'm thinking due to budget restraints I need to go no higher than the Sierra series. While I'd welcome input on the length to go with I doubt that's going to be difficult to figure out. So I guess it comes down to do I want the 3 or 4 power. Most everything points me towards the 4 but the style baits recommend for each rod points me to the 3. 3 seems awfully light to me for an all around rod, especially with Dobyns rods running a bit light to begin with. That's why I'm hoping for some people's personal experiences here.
  11. I have a 7.2:1 Shimano SLX reel that I am going to use in a combo setup. Not sure yet if I am going to start with 40lb 832 braid on it or 15lb InvizX FC. Now I have to decide on the rod. I want something that would be a great option for an all around rod. I am envisioning something I'd grab on my way out the door if I could only take a single rod with me and would handle most things well. Probably would throw 3/8 or 1/2 lipless, squarebills and small diving cranks, 3/8 or 1/2 spinnerbaits, probably A LOT of trick work or other plastics, 4 or 5 inch paddle tails, 3/8 or 1/2 chatterbaits, 3/8 buzz bait, smaller jerkbaits, etc. Just something that will do a lot of things well. I've got rods that do all these types of things specifically but I need a catch-all, as it were. I think I am going to go with a Dobyns, probably something in the Sierra line. I am leaning towards a 7' variety as a 7' MH with a fast action is the most common thing sold in a combo. I figured that size would give me the most versatility but I haven't closed the door on a 7'3" yet. I was looking at the 703C based upon the lure type recommendations it gives. But with how everyone says Dobyns runs a bit weaker than most a 3 power really makes me think I should look at the 704C perhaps. If I were to look at the 7'3" I would probably have the same issue between the 733C or the 734C. Does anyone have some personal experiences with these particular rods and point me in the right direction?
  12. I think someone posted on here recently a website that had some great deals on Dobyns rods. Anyone know what site that was?
  13. Soft plastics or every Strike King product they carry?
  14. Awesome advice Josh! I'm probably going to give this to my wife and she still has problems bird nesting. On TW website they said this about this reel: Using centrifugal force rather than magnets to control casting, the Shimano SLX Casting Reel employ and advanced VBS (Variable Braking System) to virtually eliminate backlashes and extend casting distance. Is there some truth to this or is this someone just trying to sell a reel? If this reel/design somehow did reduce bird nesting I would be more apt to letting her have it. Opinion?
  15. Is a pin "engaged" when it is pressed down or up? When you suggest engaging half the pins does it matter which ones? If so I labeled them here 1 through 6 if you can make a recommendation. Thanks!
  16. I'm thinking about trying some Owner Twist lock regular wire hooks on Super Flukes. Should I go with a 3/0, 4/0 or 5/0?
  17. I've got regular Gammy EWG 4/0 and some 4/0 Owner beast hooks so I guess those 2 options would have me covered for the most part.
  18. What is the thought process there? Is it that the weight of the hook would affect the running depth?
  19. I was looking at the light wire Owner Twist Locks hooks to try with the super fluke. Do I want the light wire or the "regular" one?
  20. I have a couple of packs of the bottom ones here but I have just been trying to figure out what I would want to fish on them. I have the same model but in the light wire for senkos and if I wanted to do something more serious I would go with the Owner Jungle straight shank. Anyone have some suggestions for what I would want to use these with? Just seems like they would do a few things OK but that there are better choices for most specific baits.
  21. Yeah I see that too and that kind of lead me to that conclusion. I saw the Owner Cover Shot hook too. What situations would I want these vs the Jungle model? I have a 7'3" Dobyns Mag Heavy that I am running 55# straight 832 braid on. I am looking for something I can flip and pitch light to medium cover if it helps.
  22. This all started because he found a sale on Owner Jungle flipping hooks and wanted to try them. He asked my opinion on if he wanted to buy only one size (he's cheap) which to go with and try.
  23. Settle an argument between me and a buddy. For most "normal" plastics you'd flip or pitch if you could only pick one hook size I said 4/0 and he is saying 5/0. Again, if you only could pick one which would you go with?
  24. Putting together an order now!
