  1. I don't know why it would even matter if there had been articles here about him. It was only 5 years ago when his behavior first went public but even that wasn't anything like what came out like a week ago. Locally we now know he was known as a fool, a liar, and a cheat, but it's not like the world knew that.
  2. Silly bass, land is for fisherman.
  3. A spinnerbait shines when it is windy. Lipless crankbaits are also gold especially because they cut through the wind for easy casting. At 15mph+ I'm likely to call it quits or not go at all if I'm going to be on the open water. The pain in the arse the wind causes it's worth it to me. It takes a good time and makes it irritating. Some guys say that in their location they deal with 20mph every day or they don't fish at all. We don't have that here so I get to pick and choose.
  4. The mushroom head does better at avoiding snags, especially in the rocks, and it allows the TRD to stand up when touching bottom. Using a round head is like using a cut up stick bait for the plastic; it will work, but it won't be nearly as good. I personally only use the 1/10oz heads at the moment because that's the lightest Z-Man mushroom head with a weedguard. I fish them in rivers for smallmouth and these rivers have a rock and sand bottom. If I don't have the guards they snag almost every cast, with the guards I hardly snag at all. The ponds I fish are too weedy for the Ned Rig and I don't visit the lakes frequently enough. Hopefully Z-Man will make the weedless version in 1/15oz.
  5. Mike Long isn't alone in his thinking. I have an acquaintance who is a casual fisherman I run into once in awhile at a certain pond. He was telling me about bluegills and crappie he keeps and that he feeds well and that they're getting massive. Then he said he could grow a record, bring it to the pond, put a hook in it's mouth, throw it out, and pretend he caught it. This was in late spring before this all exploded. Nothing like that would ever cross my mind.
  6. I agree with a Daiwa Tatula. Daiwa reels are very forgiving.
  7. I don't expect this to impact anyone outside of SoCal and it probably won't even impact them in any practical sense.
  8. The 6'8" Okuma EVX MH/MF is a great rod for squarebills and lipless crankbaits. It's technically their spinnerbait rod but it works great for these as well. The regular 7' Okuma EVX M/MF or MH/MF cranking rods would fit the bill too. $100~ for EVX rods Fenwick HMG 7'2" M/MF at $100~ is an option as well. I love those rods. However, I haven't used this one specifically. I have ML/F and M/F spinning HMGs and M/F and MH/F casting HMGs. Only reason I haven't gotten this rod is because I prefer 6'6"-6'10" rods and will go to 7' if I have to but never higher.
  9. I had to correct a friend who used to do this a few years ago. There's a group of 3 ponds 30 minutes from me that I go to once or twice a year. Last year I saw a teenager holding his spinning rod like this and somehow, and i don't know how, trying to cast it like he was fly fishing. I've gone back once this year so far and saw that same teenager doing the same thing. I didn't say a word because, I just, like, I don't know... Was flabbergasted?
  10. They're so awesome and genuine. Their only fault is they "Stan" for Shimano and won't admit it, but that's really no problem at all. I enjoy watching and learning from them.
  11. I decided to give Lews the opportunity to change my mind about them. I'm getting the new(er) $100 speed spool in 6.8:1 @ 28 IPT.
  12. Probably not the same fish. They don't tend to bite again for awhile if they "felt" the hook.
  13. They even added a treble hook to the photo. Savage.
  14. Jerkbaits are a different story. I'm interested in the guts the 7.2:1 has for hard pulling blade baits.
  15. I keep thinking about a case for fraud for making money off giant bass he either didn't catch or didn't legally catch, but there's no definitive proof; and fraud for taking tournament money from anglers who were legitimately catching their fish, but again there's no definitive proof. What we have is credible eye witness accounts, but that isn't enough in the court of law. I'm thinking about how he likely did try to kill other anglers who knew what he was doing by loosening their wheels, and how that criminal behavior needs to be punished, but again there's no definitive proof. I'm thinking about how he used intimidation tactics, especially regarding a 13 year old boy, when he made it clear he knew where he slept and shined lights through his window, and how that criminal behavior needs to be punished, but again that can't be proven in the court of law. This scumbag will get away with almost all of this. The only thing I can see him being in legal trouble over is snagging the bass in this video. How much trouble in the grand scheme of things probably isn't a lot, if any. I'm sure a case would be made about stalking, recording without consent, cries that he isn't the man in the photo, something, anything. Sadly it seems it is up to the industry to punish him. Take away all his sponsors, take away his lake records, and ban him from all the lakes. No tournaments, ever, although it seems he stopped tournament fishing because he's a fraud who couldn't answer questions honestly.
  16. Just finished reading the whole article. He threatened so many people who caught him cheating and in a few cases essentially tried to kill some of them by loosening wheels. He even threatened a 13 year old and made it known that he knew where he slept and shined lights in his window. He belongs in jail, and he's lucky he never received a shot to the head.
  17. Fenwick Aetos. 6'8" MH/F casting, 6'9" M/F casting, or 6'6" M/F spinning. Just depends, but definitely the Aetos.
  18. Bill Murphy was scared of Mike Long. ... “Murphy absolutely thought he was a cheater. I had breakfast with Bill Murphy a few months before he died, he thought not only was he dangerous, but he was a cheater, and that he was spawning a bad element in bass fishing in San Diego County,” Zieralski told me in a phone interview this May. “He did not respect Long. He feared him. He feared the element that Mike was bringing into the sport.” https://sdfish.com/general/dark-secret-americas-big-bass-guru-mike-long/2/ That's crazy. Sounds even worse than I thought.
  19. Sorry that I'm about to lead off with my regurgitated hatred for the Fury rods I bought, but the 2 of 5 I decided to keep I sold to my friend today for the price of 1. He snapped a rod with me the other day and I handed him a Fury spinning setup and he liked it (how?! lol just kidding, I know I'm the minority) so selling those to him for a deal kind of just... happened. I'm out some money I guess but I already considered it lost money to begin with. Anyways now I've got $100~ to spend towards fishing and a MH HMG rod currently sitting without a reel, so the obvious thing to do is get a reel for it. The Fury had a Fuego on it but my wife adopted it. I've decided on the SLX 7.2:1 at 29" IPT. I'll just use that setup for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, jigs, and Texas rigs. My question is, for anyone with experience with the reel, is this SLX going to be alright for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits? Will it struggle, will it feel good? I don't typically like a 7 for my reels but it is a lower IPT 7 so that would be ok to me and the 6.3:1 is 25" IPT which is just a tad slow for my liking. I guess I just want to know about the "guts" of this reel.
  20. Can there be a case for fraud here as far as money made off the lies? Seems that could be legally devastating for him. Me either it just seems like the quietest, out of the limelight place to go.
  21. If I was him I'd move to the Midwest and just fish (the right way) for fun and stay out of the tournament scene. Just live a quiet life away from the cameras.
  22. Some sports are so corrupt that it pushes formally moral athletes to cheat just to keep up with the rest of the cheaters.
  23. It's clown behavior like that that puts people like me (Aspergers) in a tough and stressful position of lie detector tests should I ever achieve my dreams. Rules, laws, and warnings exist for a reason: because it's been done, and those immoral people screw it up for others.
