  1. St. Croix changed the Legend Elite in 2005. The new models have an additional wrap and are brown. I have the green model, it is my main soft plastics rod. I like it VERY much. I too found them on sale during the model change at www.Reedssports.com. They may still have a few left in certain sizes.
  2. There is no obvious reason. Your rigging and equipment is fine. Let's try this the next time out: "Snap-set or quick-set" When you detect a bite, quickly lower the tip of your rod and reel down. Once you feel the fish, snap the rod up with your wrists withouth raising your hands, that is, keeping the butt of your rod in place. This action will drive the hook home. The snap-set should be used with all soft plastics.
  3. #8 may be okay for you, but (without getting into it again) #8 does NOT work for me with smallmouth. I have #8 on a Sustain that I fish jerkbaits on at night for walley and German brown trout. #8 is pushing it on a spinning reel, but it will probably work out alright. I hope it does. BTW, I prefer green, too. But I found some clear (which is NOT, it's white) on a super sale and that is all I am currently fishing. I really don't think it makes a difference. Still, I prefer green.
  4. Well, THANK YOU for the novel! As a matter-of-fact...THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
  5. Tournament fishing is all about numbers. No one fishing tournaments catches big fish consistantly. Nixon tried that several years ago and got his butt kicked. KVD has only caught one big fish in competition and only two 10s EVER! Catching big bass is NOT about being lucky for those that fish for big fish, but for tourney fisherman it's always luck or during the spawn. Generally, tournament guys fish fast and shallow, that's where all the easy fish live. Fishing for a "kicker" usually means 4 or 5 lbs. Guys that target big fish are looking for 5+, in Cali it's 10+. Go big or go home!
  6. The_Natural, Man, I saw the pictures in the post on "stash." So, you have a medium size bait shop in your closet, how do you "pack a bag"? Scenario: The lake is a flooded forest (Lake Fork). This is a four day event. Third week of March, the weather can be "volatile." You get to carry six rods and one soft tackle box (bag). What's your plan?
  7. Law enforcement officials need to answer two questions: Was he shot resisting arrest? or Attempting to escape?
  8. Congratulations!
  9. T-rigged, 1/8 oz bullet weight, with a bead, unpegged. I fish it with the tentacles forward most of the time in deeper water. In this situation I fish it like a tube. In shallow water, especialy in and around grass, I fish the skirt to the back and work it likes a fluke with short jerks. It looks to me like a big bug trying to make its way through the vegetation. I have not fished this bait weightless, but there is no particular reason not to.
  10. Welcome aboaed! Shimano CTE200GT (5.0:1). This reel is strong, smooth and virtually indestructable.
  11. BassChaser57, Thank you for the information. I will make no claim or prediction on how we will do at Fork, but I can assure you, I am not a bankbeater! My standard MO is slow and deep, structure not cover. I'm sure some adjustments will be in order. Thanks again!
  12. I fished the Sunline Defier briefly last fall. Bud (Kentucky Lake) let me fish one of his rigs for awhile and I REALLY liked it. It's about $40 for 330 yards which puts it in the range of some braids. If you don't mind the price, it seems like a great line.
  13. BassChaser57, Do you mean a green trailer on a black jig?

  15. stumpyfd, Welcome aboard! I haven't fished the Gamma Copolymer, but since KU_Bassmaster likes it, I'm sure it's great line. If you decide to try Yo-Zuri, I recommend Hybrid Ultra Soft. This line has virtually no memory in use. I fish #6 (11.9 lb test) on spinning tackle, #12 (19.5 lb test) on baitcasting gear.
  16. GYCB calls them Hula Grubs. I think they are significantly different than a standard grub, or at least I fish them differently. I sometimes hop a grub, but I try to fish it so that the tail is always in motion. By contrast, the Hula Grub can be fished like a tube or a jig. Whereas the grub seems to resemble a shad or minnow, the Hula Grub has more of the characteristics of a crawdad (tentacles on the front).
  17. Brand and size, but you might prefer 4", that is the most popular size. I like 1/4 oz, colored jig jeads. Red, white, chartreuse and black.

My son graduates this May from Kenyon College in Ohio with degrees in Molecular Biology and Anthropology (pre-med). The MCAT examine is the following week. Then four years of medical school, two years of internship and possibly another two years to specialize. My son will probably be thirty-something before he even starts working. Is that a big deal? I think so, but I think it's time well invested. BTW, While he is finishing his undergraduate work he has become the emergency medical technician (EMT) for the local fire department, teaches kick boxing and crav maga. He has spent a summer in Guatemala, Uzbeckistan, last summer in Thialand and a year with Doctors Without Borders in Kenya, Africa. In addition to English, my son is literate in Spanish and Russian and functional in French, Swahili and a native Thia dialect. So, I guess five years in college doesn't sound too bad to me.
  19. Nice "little" dino!

    Welcome aboard, guys!
  21. Panther Martin. This is my #1 artificial on the White River fishing for rainbows. Specifically, gold spinner, black body and chartreuse spots, 1/8 & 1/4 oz. The stretch of river I fish is not noted for smallmouth (we were trout fishing), but I caught a total of twelve small bass in two days and several were caught on the Panther Martin.
  22. Fred McClintock is one of the best multi-species guides in the country. He makes the point in this article that Float N' Fly is a technique of "last resort." Fishing the F-N-F is slow and boring, not particularly productive and even when it is successful, generally produces little fish. I wouln't waste a lot of time learning or using this technique if I were you.
  23. "Hell has no wrath of a woman scorned."
  24. I wasn't counting lures for other species, but that Little George is THE BOMB for white bass. (Silver Buddy, too!)
  25. The Palomer Knot is what is referred to as a 100% knot. If tied properly, it will not fail. This is the knot I use 95% of the time. For large lures I tie a uni knot or Trilene knot. The general answer is, no special knot is required when fishing a copolymer line.
