How do you work a wacky rig?
Yeah, I should have specified I use it weighted. If its weightless then Id agree you probably will have more success on the initial drop. I dont think I'd have the patience to work it that slow weightless using my technique.

How do you work a wacky rig?
Everyone is different then, Im just going off my personal experience and I have a huge sample size. I normally throw it in deep water and work it back up dropoffs.

How do you work a wacky rig?
This isn't true at all, at least not with my experience. I catch hundreds of bass per year slowing fishing it back to me. It's probably 10% on the initial fall. I cast it out, let if fall close to the bottom, then give it a few small twitches while lifting the rod tip up. This probably pulls it up 2 or 3 feet in the water column. I then let it sink again. Ive actually tried this in a pool before to see what it looks like. You basically get 4 or 5 "falls or flutters" instead of just the initial fall and then reeling it back in. Youre increasing your odds significantly when you have 4 or 5 falls compared to just the 1.

Are Bass Pro brand rods and reels any good?
The short answer is yes, they are very good. Heres what I have: 2 Carbonlite Casting Rods 6'6 M, they rods are a dream come true for throwing senkos and Texas rigged worms, they are extremely sensitive and lightweight, they play more like a ML though. 1 Pro Qualifier Casting Rod, 6'6 M, I use this one for cranks and spinnerbaits as it seems it has a little more backbone than the Carbonlites but not quite as sensitive. 1 PQ1 reel and 1 PQ2 reel, the original one is a workhorse, the PQ2 doesnt seem as well built to me 1 Carbonlite Reel I also have a bunch of PQ and Extreme Reels that I dont really use for bass fishing. My favorite rod out of all I own though is an old Extreme Spinning Rod, 6'0M. Ive caught hundreds of walleyes and wipers from the rivers on that rod.

Windy conditions
Jerkbaits, put your back to the wind and launch it. Then work it back against the wind, it will help it suspend and stay in the same areas alot longer.

Left alone or harassed
I have yet to have a confrontation but Ive had some idiots and weird people interact with me. I had a guy come up to me once making small talk about fishing, seemed way too nice, all of a sudden pulls out a pamphlet and asked if I had thought about "finding Jesus". Same place another time this group 6-7 were fishing. Guy comes up and asks if I want any night crawlers and I politely decline. The whole group then leaves a bunch of trash, beer cans, and just leaves 3 containers of worms. I watch them drive away in their BMW's as Im in disbelief that anyone could blatantly litter like that and not seem to care. This is a lake with a walking path around it that gets tons of human traffic. Ive never seen anyone so blatantly leave trash like it was no big deal and the kicker is there is a huge trash can right by them. I decided instead of getting in a fight going 6 on 1 that I would just pick it up myself.

What bait/lure or technique do you struggle with the most?
Jigs, Ive never caught a bass on one and I dont enjoy even trying with them anymore. If I ever do get bit on them its a tiny bluegill nibbling at them. Its just not something I enjoy throwing. I can catch bass all day with wacky ricked senkos, squarebill cranks, and topwater, but jigs I just never got the appeal of them.

- When to shut it down for the year?
Im in Iowa and Thanksgiving is my last stand. Ive had really good days in November depending on the weather so I usually stay for the end of the fall bite. I usually take December off, then get my ice fishing gear ready for after New Years.- Advice on rude bank anglers?
I would just have a little more patience. What Ive found with these Covid anglers is they have really short attention spans if they arent catching anything and quickly move on. Your scenario has happened to me on multiple occasions just this year. I simply move, wait until they get bored, then go back to my spot. I was just out tonight and its already showing some signs of crowds dieing down. My local 30 acre lake wasnt near as crowded as it was a month or two ago.- Reels and their recommended line strength
8 seems way too heavy with that setup but thats just me. I use 8 on my Shimano 3000 reels and medium rods for bass fishing.- You ever misplaced any tackle?
Just did this the other day, someone got a ziplock bag of about 50 curly tail grubs.- What keeps me going...
I notice you are in Iowa also. I disagree that the bass are getting lockjaw this time of year. This time of year is when I usually catch the biggest fish. I start my evening out about 6:30-7, usually manage a couple every night on wacky rigged senkos or Texas rigged worms. I cast out as far from shore as i can, they are deeper most of the day and into the early evening. I do this until about 8:30 then I start throwing topwater poppers. The fish usually start moving up closer to shore right as the sun sets. This is when the bugs start coming out which is to your advtantage. This is usually the time most people pack up for the evening but for me its my favorite time of day. The bluegills move up to start feeding on bugs which draws the bass in. The bass will feed on insects also. I stay until about 9:30-10 as the bite usually finally dies off about an hour or so after dark. Fish the deeper areas before sunset and after sunset throw on some topwater and start throwing shallower.- Non expensive all stars
Those BPS poppers in the bargain bin for 2.99 will catch alot of fish. Ive caught hundreds of bass using them over the years.- Shipping nightmares
I've noticed all their "clearance" items are always sold out on their website. How many unsuspecting buyers have gotten excited about getting a good deal only to find out they are sold out is beyond me. You would think if an item sells out it would be taken off the clearance section of the website within a few days but I guess thats too complicated.- Amazed by Powerbait Minnows
To this day the 2.5 inch Gulp Minnows in black shad with a 1/16oz jig are the best multi-species fish catcher of any bait Ive ever used. One day I was catching a crappie on them every cast, I ran out of them and switched to a small crappie tube jig and then I would only catch one once every 10 casts or so.- For the Bank fisherman: What "pushes" your buttons while fishing?
I hate when Im river fishing and Im 40 yards downriver from someone. They always launch some piece of cut bait out in the middle without enough weight so the current pushes it towards the bank right where Im casting. Then they get all ticked off when I snag their line.- Funny Random Encounters
I was fishing a Pop-R at night once and had a bat dive-bomb my lure. I couldnt tell what it was at first until I got out my light, luckily it got off the hook as it was flailing around.- St Croix Rods
I decided to trade it in for a Carbonlite 2.0. I've been using BPS rods for years now so maybe Im just used to their feel, but I was not impressed at all with that line of St Croix rods. I thought I would be going up in quality since they are more expensive but the Premiers just seem cheap to me. I have nothing against that company, I just wanted to try out some different brands this time. If money allows Ill probably try one of their Avid series rods at some point. I picked one of those up in the store and they seem like quality rods and a much better build quality than the Premier Series.- St Croix Rods
How does the Patriot compare to the Carbonlite? Im just wondering what the difference in $100 bucks will be. Do you have any idea how the power rating compares to the Carbonlites? In my opinion the Carbonlites play a little lighter than their power rating. The St Croix Premier I bough seemed like it plays a little heavier than its medium rating. I would rather the rod feel a little lighter on the power side than heavier.- St Croix Rods
I think I may do this actually. I already spent $150 so Ill probably just pay the xtra 50 bucks to get a Patriot rod. Do you have any experience with BPS Extreme rods? I have a 6'0 medium that I absolutely love but they dont make those anymore. If the Patriot is similar to the Carbonlites or Extremes that would be perfect for what Im looking for.- St Croix Rods
I think Im going to exchange it for a Carbonlite 2.0, I have two of those but they are "casting" rods so Im hoping the spinning are similar. in build and sensitivity. I made the mistake of ordering online before I had tried out different rods so Ill take it back to the store this time. I like the Johnny Morris Signature Series Rods but they shortest they have is 6'8 and thats a little long for my tastes. Spinning, Ive decided Ill probably go exchange it for something else. Whats your opinion on the subject?- St Croix Rods
Both are medium power rods.- St Croix Rods
Its not that I cant catch fish on it, its just not the same feeling as Im used to on my BPS rods. It feels like it has good sensitivity but it just seems like the tip has alot of play in it compared to every other rod Ive owned.- St Croix Rods
Hey guys, I decided to give St Croix rods a try based on all the positive feedback I hear about them. I decided to go with a St. Croix Premier Series, 6'6, Mf. I planned on using it for finesse bass fishing and using it on the river for walleyes and wipers. Ive used it now for a few days and Im extremely disappointed. The end of the rod tip seems extremely flimsy even though I got a fast action rod, same as all my other rods. You cant get a very good hookset at all because of this. I compared it to my Carbonlites which are exactly the same size and the last 6 inches there is definitely alot more bend in the St Croix rods even though they are both fast action. It just doesnt seem as well built to me as it should be for the price. Has anyone else had this experience when switching rod brands? Should I exchange it for an "extra fast" and see if that helps or go down to maybe a 6'0? - When to shut it down for the year?
