  1. Quite honestly, I'm not sure if they even sell dropshot tackle at Academy, Wal-Mart or Dick's. I think the closest I can come to dropshot lure is a Zoom Fluke Jr.
  2. Ok, I wanted to prove that this drop shot technique was garbage, but the truth don't lie, I've come to eat my crow!
  3. Like I said earlier. I don't fish for smallmouth bass. We don't have them in Houston, Tx.
  4. So just so I understand you right, the tag is the part of the excess line that you cut off after tying the not onto the hook. Correct? Guys to be honest, I was knocking something I didn't understand. Why is the drop shot so effective?
  5. I was watching a YouTube video that said to tie the Flurocarbon to mono. I have a hard enough time tying a uni knot
  6. For what it's worth, I do own a spinning rod. I mainly throw Z-Man Ned Rigs with it, when I want to find where the 1 and 2 pound bass are hanging out. Carolina rigs turned me off of ever wanting to fool around with leaders. To each his own I guess. If it catches fish for you, do what works I suppose.
  7. Ok, fair enough, but the work tying all the leaders and knots. It seems like overkill. It's annoying when you spend $30 for a technique that isn't practiced in my part of the country. Sometimes you knock what you don't understand.
  8. You could say that Dobyns are whippy and are a power below what they should be. I own 4 Dobyns rods and the inferior Colts have caught more fish than the sought after Furys. In fact, the way Dobyns describes their rods is very confusing. Not to mention a Heavy (5 power) is really a Medium-Heavy. Dobyns does not distribute their rods very well either. You have 733, 734, 735 and 705cb in the Fury line at Academy and Dick's, while St Croix is fully stocked at Bass Pro Shops. Dick's also has a nice selection of St. Croix. It's a convenience thing for some of us.
  9. The other day I bought an entire drop shot kit. I have the weights, I got these ridiculous feather lures that look like you'd pick up at Orvis, and a few ridiculous other drop shot pieces. I'm from Houston, we don't have smallmouth bass, why would you use drop shots. It seems like an awful lot of work. Pulling out your cute spinning rod, tying a palomar knot on both ends of the weight and then rigging your hook. I don't know anything about it, all I know is it's a midwestern thing and smallmouth bass eat it up. The nearest body of water is the Guadalupe River that is home to a few introduced smallmouth that breed with spotted bass.
  10. That is a good pond. I had a bunch of friends who lived in Forest Hills and we'd sneak on there all the time. It's a good pond. Deepdale looks pretty good. Is it heavily fished and how is the access to the pond? Is it easy to maneuver around the shore? I'm a bank fisherman...a pond hopper. I fish over at Cokeberry in the Woodlands off N. Millbend.
  11. But it's an inferior rod. I'm kidding. What are the specs? I'm looking for a MXF or MHF.
  12. Would you care to sell it? I'd gladly take it off your hands.
  13. I'm originally from Conroe. I've lived in The Woodlands, now I live off FM 242. I fish out there a bunch. There are some good spots out there. I bet we fish s ok me of the same spots. I'd love to pick your brain on some new spots. I'm assuming Yum Dinger WR means Watermelon Red?
  14. Junebug or black and blue senko weightless. If you can find them, try an ultra vibe worm weightless (in the colors above) and run it on the top of the water. The tail makes a buzzing sound, it drives the fish nuts... I've had luck on that!!!
  15. Not sure what part of Texas you're from, but I don't think bass can resist a weightless worm or fluke in these dog days of summer. I've seen my daughter catch three off a fluke jr. last week. The only thing they are biting on lately were weightless.
  16. Yep, I looked at the warranty which is 5 yrs I believe. I've also heard great things about the Bass X as a topwater/jerkbait rod in MXF. I loved the feel of the Bass X in MHF, it felt sensitive but it also felt like it had the backbone to pull in a good fish. I love my Dobyns Colt 704c, but it does lack sensitivity. I can never truly feel if a fish is on when I go weightless or Texas Rigged. I've missed some fish as a result.
  17. I wasn't trying to upset anyone. I was just wondering about Powell's website. Everyone has opinions, fishing has to be the most personal sport as it relates to equipment. I'm happy with Shimano SLXs and Daiwa Fuegos reels and Dobyns Furys and St Croix Bass X rods. Somebody might comment out of the blue how bad my set up is and how I should have spent an extra $50. I'll see your $50 and buy a tackle box full of lures and terminal tackle.
  18. Z-Man Mag Shrooms...I've used them more than my Owners.
  19. I've been at it for about 3 weeks, it's a very shallow pond about 6-7 ft. It's been hot in Houston, the bite has been slow, but finally broke my slump. Caught with a weightless senko and 704c Dobyns Colt/Daiwa Fuego CT 7.3:1
  20. I feel like, unless you are sponsored by a company, the freedom of choice is a blessing. You can't go wrong with either rod, both are solid companies.
  21. Thank you...I saw Powell was marking down his rods really big on his website.
  22. Yes, I just thought that was specific with Dobyns. Thought maybe Dobyns worked for/with Powell and then started his own thing. Do you mind telling me who else does this?
  23. So I'm looking at Powell Rods and noticed the power ratings look like the exact same way Dobyns rates their rods. Is there a connection between the two? Thanks
  24. Nice fat girl! If she can grow into her girth, it's going to be a beast! She's a deep water fish too. Very light colored! What did you catch it on? Good fish! I'd say 3.5lbs just because it isn't very long.
