After a monsoon....
After a big rain, all the microorganisms wash into the pond and you'll see baitfish right up to the shoreline, the bass will be a couple of feet deeper right below the shelf or around cover waiting to ambush the baitfish. This is a cool thing to watch. I frequent a pond by my house and sometimes, I'll just go to my spot and watch the activity. The place is a shallow area with lots of cypress knees and root systems. The baitfish will be in a school picking off microorganisms and the bass will bull rush them knocking some clear in the air and stun them and pick off the easy pray that fall to the surface. A good lure to throw is a silver and blue lipless shad just infront of the roots, I also have had luck with a white double willow leaf spinnerbait.

St Croix Bass X Rod
I am sorry, but I laugh every time someone wants information about lower end rod and somebody chimes in with spend the extra $40, for the upgrade. Some of us are weekend anglers, college anglers, high school anglers or like me a working man. Not all of us have expensive bass boats, Shimano Metaniums, and a Rolex. Look we all know that a Lamborghini is going to blow the doors off a Camaro RS, but only a hand full of us can afford a Lamborghini. It's great that you spent the money for a fast car, but we have a pretty fast car too, just didn't spend half a million to get it!!! To each his own! My point is when somebody asks about a lower end product, simply answer the question about the product and save us the drivel about spending more money on something we didn't ask for. No need to thread jack. We've all had bad experiences with one company in the past. I'll never buy another Lucky Tackle Box. Just because it's lower end doesn't mean it's garbage. The Dobyns Colts are $79.99 and I'd put them against most higher end models. Ok, so I can't feel a small pebble that my Texas Rig just hit. Just get equipment that fits your budget and fish!!! Sorry, I've run into far too many of these posts. I think it's disrespectful. A Dobyns Colt and Shimano SLX caught this.

Bait Cast bug has got me again
So far I love the SLX it feels like a working man's Curado K. I don't think I'm really all that interested in the DC, although it is cool and $10 more than a K. Something about the Curado keeps drawing me back.

Bait Cast bug has got me again
I've owned a 703c, in fact, it was my favorite rod. However, I caught a bowfin on the rod and it subsequently broke. It was under warranty so I got a 705cb, I was fishing lots of Squarebills and jerkbaits. 705cb just made sense. I regret that decision. I felt like the 703c was a jack of all trades, more so than the 734c. But as a bank fisherman. I need a shorter rod...I'm on a budget Dobyns doesn't make 683c in the Fury line. So here's what I've decided on. St. Croix Bass X 6'8" MXF Shimano SLX XT 7.2:1 Poppers, Spooks, Whooper Plopper, Buzzbait, Jerkbait, weightless plastic worms Eventually I'd like to upgrade my worm/jig rod...and I loved my Curado K (long story on how I lost it). Dobyns does not sell 704c in the Fury line at Academy, and I can get St. Croix, all the rods I need at Bass Pro Shops. The 703c and 704c are Dobyns Colts, that I owned. so here's my rig... St. Croix Bass X MHF 7'1" Shimano Curado 200K 7.4:1 Jigs / Texas Rigs / Soft plastics I've heard all the bashing of the St. Croix Bass X, but the price is good enough for me. I get a solid rod for a decent price. I mean we only read about the negatives. It's like the salesman for Lew's telling me they made poor quality batch of reels where all the lettering rubbed off the reel. After asking him about it, he laughed and said "oh you must have gotten one of our bad apples...and he did replace it free and shipped it free. There's bad product in everything. I'm sure folks have had bad experiences with Dobyns. My rod broke on a bowfin. Dobyns doesn't have a whole lot of dealers in the Houston area. I live on Lake Conroe and nobody has Dobyns rods. Plus the price isn't what I'm willing to pay for Dobyns upgrade. I think these rods are more than serviceable.

Dobyns Sierra 703c or Sierra 734c
I had a 703c and I loved it, but a bowfin broke it. I'm still mad about it. I would use it for cranks, Squarebills, topwater, chatterbaits, spinnerbait, buzzbaits (moving baits in general)...in some cases, I felt the 703c was better than the 705cb at throwing treble hook lures. Dobyns run light, so a 3 power would be closer to a medium fast. The 734c is a great rod. I throw spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits, heavy Squarebills, 1/8oz Texas rigs, swim jigs. I have a Fury and it's plenty sensitive. I have a 704c it's a sleeper and overlooked in the Dobyns line. It can do everything a 734 can do. I use it for a Texas Rig rod.

How do you use your Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw?
I fish them on a 1/16oz bullet weight on a Dobyns 704c.

Lure How To
Looks like you picked up some Ozark Trail lures from Wal-Mart. I think they are very underrated. Squarebills- typically at structure, laydowns Crankbait- usually in 4-6ft of water Poppers- normally in the early morning late evening Lipless- great in grass, the idea is to rip it and when the lure rips free, it triggers a reaction strike Buzzbait- I like to run a buzzbait along the shoreline (parallel)...if you can get a trailer hook. Run it along side lily pads.

Summer Dropshotting
I don't mean thread jack, but I bought a MTB and evidently I must have gotten a drop shot special. Got a package of lures that looked like fly nymphs on a fly rod. It was so deflating. Not my favorite fishing technique. I'll sell you them to you...nawh, I'll just give them to you.

Bait Cast bug has got me again
So the reel isn't really suited for different applications? DC ---> Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, buzzbait XT ---> Worm, jig I think the MGL paired with an 683c Champion would be ideal.

Bait Cast bug has got me again
Don't know how to change topic. Oh well, it's all subjective anyway right? I've got some ideas, but I wish somebody would give me some clues of how to use each SLX model.

For the Bank fisherman: What "pushes" your buttons while fishing?
Bald cypress trees...roots, knees...etc Those trees alone have cost me about $150 in lures. I really don't like them

Latest Catch Pics Thread
- 2020 is proving to be a tough year.
I live in the Houston area and the bite was hot from March to May, then it just went cold. I could still manage to catch a few, but not consistently. I can't even get the idiot bluegill to bite.- Bait Cast bug has got me again
I just got into Dobyns rods and I really like them. The power thing is confusing initially, but I'm beginning to understand how it works. It seems the more expensive each series is the more options you get. I'm really liking the Shimano SLX series of reels. I'm looking to get the DC, XT, and MGL. I want to try some more rods in maybe the Sierra or Champion series. I've got the 734 and 735 in the Fury. I'm interested in shorter rods too like the 684. I'm thinking the DC would be a good distance reel. I'm not sure about the XT (how would you use it...which technique.)The MGL would make a good heavy finesse reel (to me an 1/8oz weighted senko hook doesnt feel right on a spinning rod). Help me pick a Dobyns rod and an SLX reel. Technique specific. Here is my current line up: ROD...Dobyns Colt 705cb REEL...Shimano SLX 150 6.3:1 USE...Treble Hooks jerkbait, topwater, or squarebill crankbait ROD...Dobyns Fury 734c REEL...Daiwa Tatula 100 HS 7.1:1 USE...buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits ROD...Dobyns Colt 704c REEL...Daiwa Fuego CT 7.3:1 USE...jigs, Texas rigs ROD...Dobyns Fury 735c REEL...Daiwa Fuego CT 8.1:1 USES...Frog, Football jigs, Heavy lures Thank you- Wacky Rig for Spawnig Bass... Hooks???
Would weighted Swimbait hooks work? There is absolutely nothing at the big sporting goods store down the road. Yesterday, I pulled the screw in out of one of my jig heads and it worked pretty well. Can anybody recommend a decent hook that is weighted? What about an octopus hook and a split shot? I don’t like the slow action, I much prefer the Texas Rig?- Favorite Whopper Plopper Color

Anybody?- Gear Ratios & Rods
I’m getting back in the game. I here’s my current equipment: All Star Classic 6’6” Medium Fast Falcon HD 7’ Medium Heavy 6.6:1 Ratio Baitcaster 8.1:1 Ratio Baitcaster My favorite lure is a Wacky Worm rig. I had the rig paired with a 6.6:1 and 7’ MHF rod with 40 pound braid. I don’t know what it was but I caught 5 fish within 45 minutes yesterday bank fishing (which is all I do). I fish frogs, topwater, Texas Rigs, Spinners, some crankbaits and lipless. Here’s what I need help with... I’m reading so much into what I need for tackle...almost daily!!! Here’s what I’ve arrived at: Frogs: 8.1:1 on a 7'3" Heavy power Fast action. 40# braid. (What other lures can I use on this set up, I love the reel...can you suggest a reasonably priced Rod) Cranks/Lipless/Jerkbait/Topwater: 6.6:1 on a 6'6" Medium power Fast action. (I like this set up...would you suggest braid, mono, or Fluorocarbon) TexasRigs/Senkos/ Spinner: 7.3:1 on a 7' Medium Heavy power Fast action. What kind of line here? (Need a suggestion for a reel...was thinking about a Daiwa Fuego CT) *Not sure what happened to the font* - 2020 is proving to be a tough year.
