  1. I've used the St. Croix Bass X in Medium Heavy Fast and the Dobyns Fury 734c. The Fury feels like a natural for this technique. Dobyns Fury 734c Shimano Curado DC 6.2:1 12# Flurocarbon
  2. Rod: Dobyns Fury 705cb Reel: Shimano SLX 150 6.2:1 Use: Small Spinnerbaits pond magic by Booyah / squarebill crankbait / lipless crankbait Rod: Dobyns Fury 734c Reel: Shimano SLX DC 6.3:1 Use: Spinnerbaits / chatterbaits / Buzzbaits / Swim Jigs / Small Swimbaits underspin w/ 4.8 Keitech Rod: St. Croix Bass X MHF 7'1" Reel: Daiwa Fuego CT 7.3:1 Use: Horny Toads / Jigs / Texas Rigs / Buzzbaits / 1/2oz Heavy Chatterbaits / 1/2 Heavy Spinnerbaits Rod: Dobyns Fury 735c Reel: Daiwa Fuego CT 8.1:1 Use: Flipping / pitching / punching / jigs / hollow body frog / swimbaits Rod: St. Croix Bass X 6'8" MXF Reel: Daiwa Tatula 100 7.1:1 Use: Poppers / spooks / Small whopper ploppers Rod: Dobyns Colt 703c Reel: Shimano SLX MGL 7.4:1 (when they come out) Use: Finesse Rig / weightless senkos worms flukes / jerkbait Dobyns and St Croix are two of the most reliable rods for me. Dobyns run a little lighter than the specs, but make up for it in backbone...you can feel everything, especially every tick of a chatterbait and every hump dragging a jig or Texas Rig. While the St. Croix feels a little heavier as a whole, especially in the medium heavy, but they balance so well and sensitive. Favorite reel probably the SLX regular on my cranking rod. It reminds me of a Caenan in an aluminum body. I do like the SLX DC as well. Both are silky smooth and cast extremely far. The Fuegos are my workhorses, nothing too glamorous about them. They just catch fish and are very rugged and sturdy. My dark horse is the Tatula 100. I've caught more fish with it jerking weightless worms and flukes. It's virtually impossible to backlash and it's easy to operate. Just set your reel and go fishing. I can't wait to get my hands on an SLX MGL. I like finesse fishing on a baitcaster, it just feels better. I don't care for a weighted wacky rig or shakey head on a spinner. So there you have it hope that helps.
  3. Tell me about the CA-80. Been wanting to pair it with a Dobyns Colt 703c.
  4. Just curious to see how the general public is using their DC reels. To me this would be good for heavy spinnerbait, chatterbait, swim jigs in 1/2oz, heavy crankbaits, big texas rig worms and creatures. What says you?
  5. Which ever you can afford. Some of us would never spend more than $300 on a reel. Whenever I get my hands on an SLX DC it will be a sweet victory! Curado DC in a 7 speed...yes please!
  6. I don't see the SLX on the chart, do they not make the aftermarket bearings for them?
  7. Bad enough to drive a couple of hundred miles to get it.
  8. Department stores have nothing. Plenty of Lew's reel though. I want an SLX XT so bad!
  9. I have had better luck with a 6 speed especially for swim jigs. I don't understand why this is fact, but slower gear ratio with single hook moving baits is the deal.
  10. I kick myself everytime I decided to switch majors from Range, Wildlife, and Fisheries to Landscape Architecture. I could be a Fisheries biologist be now. Oh what could have been.

  12. @Bass_Fishing_Socal I'm not questioning your experience or expertise on this subject. I respect it, I just never understood the engineering involved in fishing reel. I just like equipment. I was just curious about MGLs and why they are so highly thought of, initially I thought of them like a baitcaster used to throw finesse lures, which in a round about way I was right. I don't have a boat, Jon boat or even a kayak. I'm a pond hopper, so I've got to keep my equipment to a minimum.
  13. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/ICAST20.html?from=BASRES&ccode=SHIM20B This pretty much answered my question. I guess what you have to ask yourself is how much devotion do you want to spend on finesse fishing? I prefer baitcasters any chance I get, being a pond hopper this an extra rod reel to carry. Makes planning your day trip extra important. Thanks @Bass_Fishing_Socal again.
  14. I had the Curado K, but my ex went scorched Earth on me while I was on a business trip and sold all my fishing gear in a fire sale. She made out pretty good evidently. ? I'm building back my collection. It's been fun to rebuild. Find out what I like. I am making my 734c into a dedicated single hook moving bait rod. I'm pairing with an SLX 6.2:1 for now, but I'll probably get an SLX DC in a 6 speed. The tip on the 734 is extra fast-ish. I like it that way though.
  15. @Bass_Fishing_Socal it looks like you are telling me the MGL spool is lighter and therefore has more control of light lures, at the same time holds less line than a regular spool. There in lies the question, why do people buy MGL reels?
  16. So it is a finesse type reel? I've been looking for a baitcaster to throw weightless Zoom Trick worms, Senkos, wacky worms (I like to throw wacky worms on a baitcaster). I'm thinking a Dobyns 703c would be my rod for it.
  17. I do like my equipment, but some of it makes no sense to me. Could somebody use layman's terms to effectively explain the MGL platform. I'm looking for a reel for finesse fishing, but can be multi-purpose reel too. I'm interested in perhaps an SLX MGL when they release or a Metanium MGL if I can find one, but I'd like to make an informed decision. Why did Shimano make the MGL? What are the benefits? What lures does the MGL excel in throwing? Is it made for special lures (is it a finesse reel)? Why buy an MGL over DC or a standard reel? Thank you in advance. I'm not as sophisticated as most of you with equipment. I'm trying to learn thank you for your patience. Feel free to throw as much information as you can. Whatever I left out that needs explaining, please include as much as you can on this topic.
  18. I don't understand. Can you please elaborate on that?
  19. I bring 4 to 6 pond hopping.?
  20. Personally, I'm partial to the Dobyns 735c. It doesn't feel like a pool cue, it's got the perfect backbone and feels amazing when you get a strike. Can't speak for the other.
  21. Thank you all so much for the replies. I'm still a little confused whether the 6 speed or 7 speed is the deal. I've always wanted a DC reel. It feels like a wasting money getting a 6 speed. Especially on a Dobyns 734c.
