New to fishing and overwhelmed
Well I just started fishing about 6 years ago. I started with a 20$ combo from Sports Authority. And it was a POS but I didnt know it at the time and I enjoyed the $hi+ out of that rod and reel. In fact I paied more for the Line then I did the rod and reel. (30lb braid at like 17$) As I learned more about fishing and saw that I liked it, I started to upgrade my stuff a little more at a time. AFTER I saw that I enjoyed fishing. I would recommend not to get to worried about your gear to start. Sure it would be nice to have, but its not needed to enjoy the activity. In fact I bet that most people here didnt learn on 150$ rods and 100$ reels. In willing to bet that more than not it was a zebco! Enjoy fishing, then enjoy better gear. Try not to let it get in your head that you are "missing out" not having nice stuff. Thats my 2 cents. Funny thing is that I STILL have that rod and use it more often than my "nice" stuff because it sits in my trunk and goes lunchtime-fishing with me. See if you like fishing first, then worry about the gear. Vic

Do I NEED a leader for braid?
I usually do not put a leader on my braid lines. But I fish in Fl where the water is pretty murky usually. The only reason I put a leader on is if I am fishing some thick bushes and trees. This is only because if I get caught up, having all braid is pretty tough to break off. So when I am around that cover I use a leader so that if I get caught up, it will break off easier at the knot. Why you should never be a show off.....
LOL that was great! They guy that got knocked out was doing a martial art called capoeira from Brazil. They have a lot of moves that look like dance moves. In fact they hid their martial arts training in dance where it was outlawed. Same reason how kung fu was passed on through chinese opera. Guess this guy concentrated too much on the dance and too little on the fight.

Hunting Question - Curious For Responses
The problem is that "being in pain" or "being in misery" is very subjective. At what point do you say that a deer or animal is in pain to a point where its better to shoot it. Is it where an animal is limping? Well how do you know that it wouldnt recover? Is it to where he has a visible wound and limping? Again how do you know it wont recover? Is it where the animal is bleeding out and stumbling? Or is it when the animal is lying down yelling in pain? It doesn't take much to follow the laws and to call the authorities and ask. If the animal is truly wounded to the point where a hunter thinks it should be put down, It probably wont be that hard to follow/track the animal if it can even move. I once saw a three legged deer in the wild. I saw a few others with bad limps and healed gunshot wounds. Whats to stop someone from shooting one of these out of season and saying "it was in pain".

Re: Braided Line Question
50 lb power pro or suffix performance braid. Might sound like overkill but it has the same diameter of 14-16lb mono. The trouble is if you get hung up really bad you might have a tough time breaking the line. Vic

Hunting Question - Curious For Responses
Call it in. Your not a vet and if you shoot it, your poaching. Animals get wounded in the wild all the time and some of them are in miserable pain for the rest of their (probably short) lives. It may sound cold-hearted, but its nature. Vic

Dear Mr. BaitCaster
Braid is more limp than standard mono. Thats why it is sometimes easier. It lays real lazylike on the spool and doesnt want to "spring" out like some mono and floro can due to line memory. 50 pound braid is the same diameter as 12-14 lb mono. Thats the reason heavier braid is prefered. 12 lb braid is very thin. In your situation, make sure you adjust your cast control knob after switching to the t-rig worm also. Vic

Dear Mr. BaitCaster
Two things might cause this. One is that the spool is releasing out line to fast. When you toss out a lure, it leaves the rod really fast, then starts to slow down in the air, then falls into the water. Now the spool is letting out line during this entire time BUT when the lure starts to slow down and fall, the SPOOL is still spinning really fast because it has less friction. This causes slack and extra line in the spool and BAM you get a birds nest. And this will happen while your lure is flying through the air. What you have to do here is apply thumb pressure to make sure that the spool isnt letting out line faster than the lure can pull out. The second cause maybe that your line is too stiff or has to much memory causing it to loosen up as soon as you release the spool. Kind of like a spring right after you cast. Try some 40-50 pound braid. Understanding how a birds nest occurs is the key to stopping it. Its mostly what I stated in the post above but I just wanted to show you why it happens. Vic

Dear Mr. BaitCaster
Sounds like your not putting thumb pressure soon enough or your line is unwinding off the spool after you cast. Apply the thumb pressure when the lure is still in the air but slowing down. In otherwords just after it hit its speed apex so that the spool is not letting out more line faster than the lure is flying. It can also be that your line stinks. I tried a few lines that were so stiff that it jumps off the spool everytime I casted no matter what. This happened to me more with floro line. When I switched to braid, it never jumped off the spool again. Another tip, if you cant get it yourself, have someone else HELP you. Some people learn better when shown instead of reading or watching a video. Maybe asking someone to show you how to once, you might get it easier. You have a good reel. Your line might not match your reel. Sorry to hear that your giving up though especially since you spent all that money and didnt even get it out on the water. Vic

how old were you when you learned the bimini twit??
Mostly for offshore fly fishing. Good for larger fish and for fish you have to pull up into the boat. Vic

$200 for speeding?
Thats 17 MPH over the speed limit. The ticket wont be the last of it. get ready to bend over and take it from the INSURANCE companies after they catch wind of it. They always ask "have you ever beend ticketed for going over 15 mph over the speed limit". A ticket like that once doubled my friends premium. Just be glad you didnt get a reckless driving ticket with that also. Vic

Burned out on Baitcasters....
I just read your post again and I might have gotten the intent of your post incorret. After re-reading the original it seems that you know HOW to cast a baitcaster and do so on your fishing trips. But you are getting frustrated that you get at least one backlash during your trip. If this is the case, then what I recommend is that you slow down before every cast and try to concentrate on your cast and spool control. And do so before and during EVERY cast. Keep that in mind and I bet that you will go without a backlash. They seem to happen most when your not really paying attention. Now if you are getting a backlash on the majority or good part of your casts, then see the above post. Vic

Burned out on Baitcasters....
Do you set your cast control knob also (not just your brakes)? You have to set that for every different lure you use. Try using 50lb braid. That can help you a little in the begining. The "trick" is to learn when to apply thumb pressure and how much to apply. When you cast your lure, you will notice that the lure is flying through the sky and your thumb can feel the spool going fast. Now right before your lure starts slowing down in the air, you apply the tumb pressure onto the spool to slow that spool down. The backcasts I get usually occur when the spool is going faster than the line is being pulled out. So if you watch the lure and the spool, you will see that once the lure slows down the spool continues to go at the same speed for a while. Thats where you get the backlash. The tighter your cast control knob, the slower the spool will let out line. That is why its important to set that one correctly. But remember even pros get backlashes once and a while. Vic

trout help!
Salmon eggs work really well also. You can get those by the powerbaits usually at the store. If legal where you are going, I would go for a size 14 or so treble hook. Sprinkle a little salt on the eggs to keep them from breaking easier. I prefer these to powerbait. I seem to get better results on stocked trout. Crickets are also a pretty good bait to use.

Just wow! Darn theives
ACK! LOL one sec, I looked at the video again in higher quality and what I took for a charging hadle on the bolt, wasnt. I also didnt see the saftey that is common on AK platforms. Sorry Burley you were certainly right and that is not an AK I was wrong. :-[ Sorry about that Here is the actual rifle and it is an AR-15 made by Olympic Arms. http://www.olyarms.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=57&category_id=7&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=37&vmcchk=1&Itemid=37 Vic

Just wow! Darn theives
Here are a few more pictures of various AK-47 designs. There are many different variants but they work the same way. Another on a bipod Now take a look at all the Ak-47's, specifically at the middle of the barrel. That tube going up fills with gas and pushes a piston that ejects the spent shell and reloads the rifle. On all three rifles, this is present (these two and the one in the video). Ok here is an AR-15 Now if you look at the AR15 design, you will see that this is not present. The AR has a much smaller gas delivery tube system that directly recharges the rifle. In otherwords there is no piston that the gas needs to push back on to reload. Vic

Just wow! Darn theives
Looks like an AK-style rifle to me. This looks like an AK? :-? Completely, If you notice the gas block and gas tube on top of the barrel and the handle attached to the bolt. Thats more of an AK design than an AR. The gas from the fired round goes up the block and pushes the piston. Here is a diagram a similar designed AK as the one pictured above. They AR's use a different system. You can see it a lot better when she turns the gun arround to the other side (at 1:49/2:12 into the video, I dont know how to take a picture of it). But the lower section does look a lot like an AR though. Vic (source: www.ultimak.com) They AR's use a different system. You can see it a lot better when she turns the gun arround to the other side. Carp Fishing (Pics)
What you have there is a Mirror Carp. They are a mutation of the common carp. Where common carp have even scales, the mirror carp have some very large scales, mixed with small scales, even patches of no scales. The mirror scales are unique and you might not find many with the same patches of scales. Google Mirror Carp and you will see a few examples. Vic

Just wow! Darn theives
Looks like an AK-style rifle to me. The scarry part is that the theives were cutting the phone lines. So they knew that someone was going to be home.

Carp in my Bass Pond
Bread balls and mealworms on hooks work really well. If you want to use artificials the only thing I have seen them caught with are Gulp! worms. But there may be others. They are FUN to catch but take some time to revive them. They use up a lot of energy in the fight and take longer to revive than other fish.

Plasma, worth it or not?
If power bills is a concern, then go with LCD. I once walked past my brothers Plasma Screen while it was on and I swear it was about 5 degrees hotter in the vacinity of the screen. You can feel the heat eminating. Vic

WASP Injection Knife
What does WASP stand for? Every time I see that knife I think White Anglo Saxon Protestant. I couldnt find on the site what their knife acronym stood for. It looks like a cool idea, but the gas delivery system needs a little work I think. You have to depress the thumb button on the guard in order to relesae the gas. In a situation where you are stabbing a predator under the sea, or even a person attacking you, it would be hard to get the timing right in order to depress the button and release the gas. Most things move away REALLY fast after you poke it with something sharp. They dont stay still and let you press the button like a melon. After watching the videos again, it took about 2 seconds between stab and gas release on the first melon. A little longer on the second melon. And these are people trained and know exactly how the knife works. Vic

Carp in my Bass Pond
These fish are created and introduced into a habitat for purposes of vegitation control to protect the native habitat including irrigation and flood control. There are a lot of steps to introducing this fish into a water body and its costly. But mainly because they are providing a service for the habitat they are in. But Common Carp is a different story all together. Vic
