I do not have a lot of experience with fish attractants. I do have a lot with scents for attracting deer. I understand there is a vast difference between mammals and fish, but I think one thing that holds true for deer is probably the same for bass. One day that scent may either attract bass or cause them to hold onto the bait longer, and the next day it may cause them to shy away or reject the bait quicker. As far as human scent is concerned, as **** sapiens is not a natural predator of bass (as concerns living in its environment), I’m not concerned about my natural human scent all that much. Unnatural odors such as gasoline, motor oil, etc. is a different story.

I may try that. I also used to have some worm hooks where the point was not parallel to the shank (slightly offset to the side). I think they may have been Eagle Claw hooks. They always had a positive hookset.

Wow. I used to fish almost the same way. Except no weight and would put the hook in the worm’s head like a TR and let the whole worm dangle. When I got back into fishing last April after a long hiatus (almost 30 years), I started doing what I used to do- nightcrawlers on a #6 Eagle Claw snelled baitholder hook. On the bottom or 2’ under a bobber for panfish. I caught this bass on a Cabela’s UL graphite rod and a Shakespeare 2052 spinning reel with 8 lb Stren. That’s my PB, between 6-7 lbs going by measurements (had no scale at that time). That bass started me down this new road of new rigs, new baits, a small boat, etc. But nightcrawlers can catch bass for sure. But they also attract a lot of turtles! I’m glad I stopped using live bait!

Intriguing. But from what I’ve seen, every EWG point is in line with the eye. Many anglers complain of poorer hooksets with EWG’s over round offset hooks. Ergo, one would think a hook maker would offer an offset EWG to give one a bigger gap and a better hookset. Thoughts?

Standard-sized plastics I use a round offset hook. Normally a 3/0. Fattter plastics I’ll use a EWG. Question: does anyone make an offset EWG hook? If not, why?

It sounds like fault is with the boat captain if the boat had known engine trouble. But today, someone wants somebody to pay $$$.

Mine still works, but it’s rough and unwieldy compared to modern baitcasters. Thought about getting it overhauled but probably won’t lol.

I bought one in the 70s as a teenager. I had a 3H (blue) and my friend had a 5H (bronze). We were the only two I ever saw with baitcasters back then in Maryland. Granted, we were teens so it wasn’t like we traveled much lol. Still have it.

90% of the time, none. Either from the bank or my inflatable boat. If I do add weight, normally 3/16 oz is the heaviest I use. But I’m only fishing 8’-10’ waters.

I still think a 454 big block sounds better than a 7.4L. And when it’s 0° out, that’s cold, not just when water freezes. And seriously, does 45°C sound hot? ?

Superior is a subjective term. I mean that sincerely. Can I say a 5” Senko is superior to a standard plastic worm, for all conditions, for all bass small, medium and large, in all types of water and bottom conditions? I don’t think I can say that. What I will say is that whether fished wacky or weightless Texas rigged, it is a rare day it does not produce. It may not light the world on fire, and it may not catch the biggest hawg in the pond, lake or reservoir, but it does get bitten pretty much every trip. I cannot say that about too many other baits.

That would be my #2 choice.

5” Senko. #956 in particular. The first time I ever pulled one out of the package I thought “Wow. Straight. No real tail to speak of. Kinda soft and squishy compared to a standard plastic worm. Rips easily. And this is supposed to be good?” Yeah. It was good. Very good. Truth be told, if I was forced under pain of death to pick one bait to fish exclusively until I departed this vale of tears, I would pick a 5” Senko hands down and never lose a moment of sleep. Wacky rigged or weightless Texas rigged, I’d catch bass.

I tried Catch and Release bowhunting once. Go figure. The stupid buck wouldn't go back where he came from. Last time I was Mr. Nice Guy!

Tying a Palomar, take care the line doesn’t get nicked by the end of the hook eye. That knot always seems to migrate in that direction so I make sure before tightening the line is at the top of the eye and nowhere near the end. One nick can doom you. In fact, it’s the primary reason I shy away from Palomar knots on lures and tend to use them only on bare hooks.

I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a Dobyns Fury or St. Croix Mojo Bass MHF casting reel, but I am intrigued by the Falcon Lowrider. Sounds like a great rod.

Yes. And...no. I got back into bass fishing after an almost 30 year hiatus last April. I started out using all my old spinning rigs, most over 40 years old (with new line of course!). Once I got hooked lol, I started buying some new rigs. I now have six- three baitcasters and three spinning. I can tell you that I while those old Garcia Mitchell and Shakespeare reels will always have a place in my heart, I would not want to fish with them exclusively over modern rods and reels. But, I’m starting to determine that I have a few favorite ways to fish and instead of trying every new bait under the sun, to rely on what I like and what works. Mainly some topwaters and soft plastics of several types. Those are the two presentations I like to fish the most. Line? Five of my six rigs are either Berkley Big Game, Berkley XL or YZH. One is Sufix 832 with a 6 lb YZH leader. I would be happy if I only used mono from here on out. I know what it does, it ties tight knots that don’t break, and is easily replaced with fresh line for $. I do like the braid and leader for some presentations, but I could live without it. I have no bass boat, just an inflatable for fishing the ponds, and no electronics, and at this stage in life I never will. I’m happy to sit on the bank in a chair if it gets my line wet.

I get ya, but if I’m using braid and lures prone to snagging, I’d much rather break off 6’ of 6 or 8 lb leader at the most (likely breaking at the knot on the bait)than lose all that braid.

That’s really a good looking bass. Not all of them look as good as others. That’s a fish to be proud of right there!

I’d say if that was a big concern, the “braid and leader” crowd would cease to exist!
