One warm day
Since Trout Opener I've consistently caught river walleye up to 20" and +2# creek smallies But no trout on some of my best trout patterns.

Spinning outfit vs baitcast outfit for smallies
So its the mechanics (pulling like a winch) of the reel, more so than the rod. Is that it?

How long to you stick with a lure / technique before switching?
Considering the number of times ive caught a bass on the first cast with a lure I should probably change up lures alot more often. Basically if i think ive covered the area without a bite i will move and repeat. Before i move again i switch up my lure

Fly tying....getting back into it.
Ive been using 5ft of 20# Big Game to a swivel and then 2ft of either 17# or 12# depending on the streamer. I add split shot above the swivel. The swivel might be unnecessary but i heard that line twist can really be a problem in rivers and i fish current 90 percent of the time.

Fly tying....getting back into it.
Im just getting into fly fishing. Right now im sticking with a floating line and lightly weighted streamers. I'm figuring out how to build my own leaders with mono.

Fly tying....getting back into it.
You'll drove smallies crazy with these. Are you throwing them on a fly rod?

Does Berkeley Big Game Mono work well on a baitcaster?
Im going to try Big Game as fly line leader! That stuff is great!

Canoe keeps turning backwards
A 15 ft daytripping canoe can carry a thousand pounds with 6" of freeboard. It could be uneven load that is tge trouble but i confess to some serious doubts. If an experienced paddler can solo a 17ft expedition canoe in a decent breeze without any load and track fairly straight then anyone can use a j stroke successfully if the conditions arent extreme. Just my opinion

Risky topic…what are your personal biases???
Mono resists damage better than fluoro Uni is better than palomar FG is the best leader knot I dont need a baitcaster Buzzbaits and chatterbaits dont work Everyone needs a moderate action rod Smallies are more fun than LMB

One warm day
So, Weve had some snow wrapped around 60 F days. Thats spring . But i guessed the smallies might have come shallow into the creeks today. Water temps near 50 and rising. Today it was breezey and hazy so it seemed a good bet. Im not certain i was correct but i did have a solid 3# follower while sight fishing a tiny creek. Thats always a rush when a big fish charges your lure. (Edit- he didnt pick it up)

Spinning outfit vs baitcast outfit for smallies
Why cant spinning gear be effective for larger lures? I would agree that baitcasters are more efficient, is that what you mean?
-
Canoe keeps turning backwards
Ive done alot of canoeing and while i dont quite understand what "turning backwards" is i assume the canoe isnt moving in a straight line. Whoever is in the back of the canoe doesnt know what theyre doing.

Spooking the fish

Is this time of year directly before the spawn one of the toughest times to find river smallmouth?
I can find them reliably once the water temps are near 50, but yeah if a cold snap hits they houdini. And I find the biggest smallies in some of the smallest waters. Probably because they warm sooner. Conversely they also cool quickest.

One warm day
Just one creek chub today. Some guy with his kids asks me what kind of fish are in the water just as i hook the creek chub. Atleadt his kids were impressed. Maybe a fisherman was born today?

One warm day
Decided not to fish today on Easter Sunday but its beautiful outside and im having a beer at a fire. In the swirling wind at my roof top 3 bald eagles enter the scene, two lock talons and spin like tops in a dive. AMAZING MOMENTS

Hair Jigs
I throw black maribou jigs year round. When water hits about 55 I will throw soft plastic and rubber skirted jigs but when the waters under 50 the plastics i use get stiff and the action suffers.
