Garmin Striker 7SV question...
Well, hell... That messes up that theory. I might have to re-think my plans going forward. My trolling motor, at max setting, can barely hit 4 MPH. Thoughts?

Garmin Striker 7SV question...
Really? 4-5 MPH? I was hoping I could have it on my trolling motor...just sitting there...then turn the trolling motor sideways and "look" in front of the boat(???)

Garmin Striker 7SV question...
Been looking at the Garmin Striker 7SV with Transducer for my old aluminum fishing boat. Plan to mount this up front with transducer on my trolling motor. Will this package give me side view with the included transducer? Or do I need to purchase an upgraded transducer? Thanks! Daubs

Tips for beginner.
Welcome. Read, read, and read some more.... But don't be afraid to experiment. What works in another part of the country might not be the best presentation in your neck of the woods. Good luck!

Who does Deep Fried Turkey

When to shut it down for the year?
Got out Friday and Saturday...windy, atmospheric temps started in the 50's, warmed in to the mid 70's both days. Water temps were in 46-49 degrees. Wind was howling, 15-30 with gusts to 40 on Saturday. I managed to stay out of the wind for the most part. If fished low and slow. No bites. It was GREAT to be out on the water. Highs this week in the 40's...deer season starts Saturday. Cover going on the boat today...time to hunt!

We all start somewhere.
Been fishing a relatively new reservoir here in Eastern Nebraska...have talked to lots of fishermen. Amazed to see what people are throwing... I like to stop and see if they are doing any good. When people ask what I'm throwing I always tell them and show my set up.

Anyone else use a cheaper boat?
Picked up this 1960 Rich Line with 1974 Merc 20HP with trailer for $650. That was back in 2000. I've added the seats, front casting deck, and trolling motor. Great one or two man fishing outfit. If I bump in to trees or rock, I don't sweat it.

Who Made The Switch To Mostly Braid On Bait Cast Reels ?
All my bait casters have has straight braid since the mid 1990's. Water pretty stained in this part of the country...visibility less than 3 feet. I still catch fish. I have one spinning rod with straight braid. Rest of my spinning rods have Trilene XL ranging from 6-10lb test. Tried Floro on a spinning rod this summer...hate it. Holds memory, casts like crap. I might try a different brand. We will see.

When to shut it down for the year?
Well hell. Brother and I were set to duck hunt this weekend...but the farmer called, we can't hunt. Another buddy has paying clients at his blind on Saturday and Sunday, so that is a no-go. I could hunt with a few other friends, but it's going to be 74 on Saturday, and 72 on Sunday.... I just may need to pull the cover off the boat and fish : ) I've never fished this late in the year...I'll be reading the forums and "winter fishing" articles...

Any ole timers are to share
Me and a bunch of buddies from here in Nebraska headed down to Fork in summer of 1996. Threw everything but the kitchen sink, couldn't catch a cold. Talked to a few locals a the bar and they suggested shiners on slip-bobber rigs...said to get the biggest shiners we could find. "Toss it out, grab a beer...when that bobber goes under, count to three, set the hook, and HOLD ON!" We had a blast! Biggest bass that week was close to 9 lbs. (for reference, master angler in NE is 5lb bass)

Who do you send your reels to for service?
Youtube and do it all myself. Also do all the maintenance on my Duramax, Accord, John Deere x750, Polaris 550's, Lawn Boy 6278, Benelli, build and maintain my own computer. I won't take apart my Nikon DSLR (D3s), I draw the line there : )

You ever eat a LMB that you catch?
Love fish and seafood. Grew up eating catfish from Platte river here in Nebraska. Have eaten a few crappie, bass, and trout we caught locally. I have not eaten any fish I personally caught in 20+ years.

Picking an aluminum bass boat
My brother has been looking at boats for a while. All brands. Buddy of ours had a Tracker...didn't like it. Build quality was not what he was expecting. My brother is going with a Lund Alaskan when he retires from teaching.

You ever wonder how bass eat bluegill and crawfish so easily when we can’t even pick them up without getting nipped?
Their brains are small...I believe we "overthink" fishing much of the time and give fish too much credit. Heck, I think we do the same with deer, waterfowl, turkeys...they aren't that smart...

In college, had a professor who was a huge animal rights advocate...didn't like the fact that i hunted because it potentially caused "pain." She did not have a problem with fishing. From her research, she believed based on fish anatomy, they do not feel pain as we do.

Anybody Got Purchase Plans Over Winter?
Looking to get two fish finders -- transom and trolling motor/bow mount.

Glenn
I've only been here a short time (summer), but have learned so much! Very much appreciated Glen!!

I struggle with the dropshot.
Never tried the drop-shot before... Rigged one up with just the stuff I had in my tackle box...medium light spinning rod with 6lb mono, small hook, did have drop shot weight. Attached an old green FLW 4" french-fry... Threw it out near timber in 9' of water...next to 16' deep channel. Third cast...BANG! 3.5lb bass.

Does color really matter?
Read research / book years ago...early 1990's...researcher compared human to hunting dog to LMBass... For comparison: - Human can smell what equates to a drop of vinegar in a 2 liter bottle of water - Bird dog can smell drop in a 50 gallon drum - Largmouth Bass can smell a drop in an Olympic size swimming pool I don't remember the researcher, nor the book...but that quote stuck with me all these years. Oh, and he also said the reason your wife/girlfriend out-fishes you, makeup usually contains fish-oil...and attracts fish : ) I keep a bar of soap in my boat, for when my hands contact gasoline / etc. And to wash off the fish slime (that's for me...not the fish catching).

Gimmicks and gadgets curse?
The world is always doing it's best to separate you from your money...ALWAYS. Bass fishing, hunting, buying a new car/truck, refrigerator, clothing, phones, computers, food...it's all about the latest and greatest...Companies are always looking for the next great thing...to drive more sales. It's all about increasing market share and profit. And that ain't an all together bad thing...drive innovation and creativity. It's a sad thing when a good product is discontinued...I have a bunch of old Cabela's branded hunting clothing (Gore-tex, Cordura, Thinsulate...). They don't make them like they used to...

Does color really matter?
I think it matters in certain situations...I've been fishing the exact same lure as a buddy, but in a different color...and watched him boat many fish while I got skunked. Could have been presentation, but I tried to mimic him as closely as possible...and when I tied on the same color, BAM, fish(!). My largest bass ever was on a rainbow trout colored Slug-Go in a NE Missouri farm pond. No trout any where near that little pond...go figure. Does color matter...I think the answer is... "yes...and no...it depends..."

Looking to buy my first boat
Tillers up on plane, depends on the boat. I put Doel-Fin on my 20HP Merc, gets me up on plane quick and I can manage 23 MPH on the GPS with this set up. 14' Rich Line. Stick with a v-hull. My Dad and brother have a tri-hull...it's rough. Get the best boat you can afford...buy once, cry once. Now is a good time to look for boats...people get sick of them, don't want to winterize, don't want to store them. Keep looking...bound to find something that fits your needs.

If you only can take one lure/bait and combo
Medium light spinning rod with 6lb mono...1/4 oz lead head, white power grub. When all else fails trying to catch bass, I throw the white power grub...it catches bass, crappie, bluegill and the occasional pike. Easy to cast and retrieve. If I'm only concentrating on Bass, it's the 6' medium action bait caster with 20lb braid, texas rigged blue-fleck power worm.

When to shut it down for the year?
I love fishing...but this...yes...
