  1. My friend: it's phrase
  2. I've got a Thunderbird on the way. It's rated at 1/4 - 3/4oz with a slower action so it should be good for moving baits. I have a Dobyns Sierra 683c that I like a lot and I "needed" a travel rod and wanted to try out Megabass. I'm going to put a 6.x:1 reel on it and use it for lighter moving baits. Maybe some lightweight Texas rigs or finesse jigs - we'll see. Any other Triza owners have thoughts on the lineup?
  3. I noticed that TW collected sales tax from me for the first time on this most recent order, so that's new within the past month or so. I figure all the money I've spent with them over the past year probably kicked them over the threshold in my state.
  4. For what it's worth I sent them this via email: About an hour later I got a link with access to the 20% off deal.
  5. The reel that has pleasantly surprised me the most in my short time bass fishing is the SLX MGL. It certainly doesn't feel as solid/smooth as the Metanium, but I like the way it feels in the hand and it casts great. I agree that a Curado MGL is probably a good option here - I just wanted to give Daiwa a try.
  6. That does look like a compelling value relative to the Steez, especially when I don't absolutely have to have the lightest reel. Thanks for the tip.
  7. I have an Aldebaran (ALDMG51HG) on an Expride 6'10" MF right now. I throw stuff like 2.8" - 3.5" paddle tails and 3/8 - 1/2oz jerkbaits with it. I'd like to work on skipping weightless plastics with this rod, and I'm thinking about checking out something from Daiwa. I was eyeing a Steez SV TW. What interests me about this reel is simplicity of operation combined with good performance in a variety of conditions. Would this be a good jumping off point for me in terms of Daiwa, or is there a better option? Thanks.
  8. I recently fished a quarry that had a pretty well-defined brush line in the middle of the water, with plenty of brush jutting up. I knew there were a lot of bass set up on that line. A skip shot on a weedless rig lets you fish through that stuff without getting your actual line hung up the way an overhand cast would.
  9. I just now tied some brand new braid to a brand new spool using an arbor knot and four half hitches, but stopped short of actually spooling it up. With the braid wrapped around a gloved hand several times I can't make it budge on the spool. What am I missing?
  10. If you do some half-hitches on top of your standard arbor knot you can tie braid directly to the spool with no backer, tape, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QirU7zw6Bw
  11. Last fall while fishing a lake out of the kayak in inadvertently hooked a good-sized turtle on a lipless crankbait. I didn't have a net with me and I wanted to free the bait from the poor guy so I had to use my pliers to hold his shell while I worked the treble free. As soon as I popped the hook free it shot into the fleshy party of my thumb, barb and all. Let's just say I'm glad it was free of the turtle at that point. That reminds me, I need to order some cutting pliers like those posted in this thread...
  12. I agree with all of this. I've caught my biggest bass (plural) on underspins and I've caught bass in various water on underspins. All seasons. I like the weedless Owner Flashy Swimmer in 1/0 and 3/0. Willow and Colorado both catch 'em. Keitech Fat Impact gets it done.
  13. I have a similar opinion. I don't have a specific chatterbait setup; just a graphite MH/F and a 7.2:1 reel that is spec'd at 30 inches per turn. When I get a bite after ripping it through the grass I'm reeling as fast as I can to catch up. A slower rod would probably allow for a slower reel but honestly I don't have any complaints about my current setup.
  14. I managed to get everything reassembled without much trouble and it's a definite improvement. Had it been like this out of the box I wouldn't have posted this thread. I did at least gain some confidence in doing basic reel disassembly and maintenance and learned a lot in the process. Thanks again to all who chimed in.
  15. Thanks for all of the input. This is the ALDMGL 51HG, purchased new from TW. I got brave enough to take the left side plate off (the side covering the gears), and it seems like the culprit is the roller clutch bearing (BNT5099) and the roller clutch inner tube (BNT3289). It's got grease on it, but I'm going to try flushing that and re-greasing with what I have on hand: some Mil-comm TW25B grease. It's what I use on pistol slides and rifle bolts. Wish me luck in getting everything back together!
  16. That's kind of what I had in mind but didn't want to tear into a new reel on a wild goose chase. I've already looked at a couple of videos on how to do it and of course the schematic diagram is included... I just need to set aside some time and make sure I have the right stuff on hand.
  17. A year ago when I dove into bass fishing I started with SLX DC baitcasters. No complaints there, but after picking up an SLX MGL I decided to check out some of the higher-end reels in Shimano's lineup, so I recently picked up a Metanium (8.1) and an Aldebaran MGL (7.4). I have not gotten to spend much time with either but I'm wondering if the noise and resistance that I feel in the Aldebaran is normal. It's tough to tell much from a video but I've created a very simple one. The first reel is the Metanium, second is the Aldebaran. The spool tension is very loose, drags are tight, brakes are at their lowest settings. Do I need to see about doing some maintenance on the Aldebaran or does this seem normal?
  18. I got my butt handed to me a week or two ago by my 9 y/o neighbor fishing my own stuff in the same places. It was almost certainly down to presentation. He was chucking, winding, and popping and I was trying to do things "right." I don't plan on changing anything. Even though he caught fish and I didn't, he also slipped on the bank and fell in and I didn't, so we decided to call the day a draw.
  19. Yes. I placed an order about a week ago that shipped a day apart: half from GA, half from CA. My order placed early this morning has also shipped. Glad to see it.
  20. Not that I know any better, but I'm curious why a change in rod would cause you to want to go from 30# to 50# braid or vice-versa. Casting distance? edit: it occurs to me that you probably mean that you have two MHF rods already spooled with 30# and 50# braid, and that the one that you'd use for these applications is the one that you have with you
  21. Got my order in and it looks like everything got the discount for me, including Shimano, Lucky Craft, and Megabass.
  22. I thought I'd revisit this thread now that I've purchased and fished a non-DC reel: an SLX MGL 70. I get it now. A Keitech 2.8 on a 1/8oz underspin casts effortlessly and accurately. Need to do a one-handed backhand cast to get around a dock or a tree? No problem; just a light flick of the wrist. I realize that these aren't great feats, but they're certainly easier with the MGL than the DC. The learning curve coming from only DC reels was not at all difficult, but I'm sure I'll be glad I have the DCs available in the windy winter and spring. I would absolutely still steer a novice towards a DC (just my opinion), but I'm glad that I've got multiple tools for the job at hand. Thanks to all who provided input.
  23. Whew, thanks for all of the varied replies. I've got a handful picked out to start with: Megabass Vision 110 HT-ITO Wakasagi Megabass Vision 110+1 Jr. GP Pro Blue Jackall Rerange Jerkbait HL Silver Shad 110 Jackall Rerange Jerkbait Blue Pearl Shad 110 Rapala Shadow Rap Ghost 6th Sense Provoke 106X Shad Sense Lucky Craft Lightning Pointer 110SP Bone Pro Blue There were several other really attractive recommendations that I will likely experiment with once I get some time on the water. The Duo Realis Rozante would have made the cut except TW is out of most colors. I have owner ST-36 hooks at home in what I assume are the proper sizes (#5 and #6), but I plan on fishing these lures as they come out of the box. Should I consider a different style treble for when I eventually need to replace some?
  24. I've spent the last year learning how to fish for bass, but I've never fished a jerkbait. I'd like to put a few in the tackle box and get a hang of it so I can be ready as the water temps drop. Down here in MS I'm targeting largemouth and spots. Visibility is typically 0-5' and water temps don't get much below 40 degrees. I'm probably throwing these on a 6'10" MF Expride and baitcaster but I also have a couple of MF spinning rods in the 6'6" - 7' range. Obviously the MB Vision 110 is the standard, and I plan to buy a few in the colors that are commonly recommended. What else, though? 110 Jr.? 110 FX? Ito Shiner? Branch out to Lucky Craft or Jackall?
  25. In the past it shows up as regular price when you check out, but when you get your emailed invoice it reflects the discount.
