Baits you plan on trying this year.
The one I'm trying this year is a fluke. Never fished one before. I was very successful last year with baits I either never tried or never caught a fish on. Before last year I had never caught fish on a spinnerbait, jig, large worm 10" plus, or a shaky head. And trick worms. Both regular and magnum. These have become a favorite of mine. I caught fish on all of them. In fact a few were my most successful lures. I'm hoping to be successful again with the fluke. I'm thinking it might be one of my best lures of the year. I hope you are successful with your lures you are trying this year. Tight lines. Bill

Big Carp eat lures!
I don't like carp. They fight well. I never caught one until this year. I have snagged 2. I think the same one twice. Second time I snagged the tail with a Mepps. Took me 13 minutes to land it. I was using my ultralight rod with 2 pound test. Ended up being a 29 inch 10 lb carp. This was in a small pond. I am disabled and have severe back issues. And landing and releasing them hurt my back. Was a great fight. But I would rather not catch another one. If I caught a 10 lb bass the pain would be worth it.

Oh yes. I have over 60 Mepps. And a number of Rooster Tails. When all else fails. Throw on a Mepps. Or other spinners. Fish bight them not to feed but either curiosity or a defensive bight. Not sure what it is but they want it out of their area. Who knows why? But they do bight them. Question for you inline guys. Do you use swivels? I have but I don't see them really limiting line twists. And I think they deter bights. I will fish with one on and not get a bight. Take the swivel snap off and then get bights. And I use the smallest I can find. But on the small ones, the swivels don't seem to work well. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I was at my local go-to pond today. I fished my normal bass gear and lures with not a bight. I had my ultralight gear with me so I decided to try that. Caught 3 smaller largemouths in a short time. Nothing big. But I didn't get skunked. Thank goodness for ultralight gear.

I'm Still Sick About It
Thanks. My "complaint" was not as much about the reel not being tight in the seat. But the poor quality of the seat. Seems very, very cheap. I did read a few reviews and none of them mention this. Maybe I am expecting to much. But I don't think so. But it is on there now and unless it falls off it won't bother me. The rest of the rod I love. It is basically my old rod with different guides and reel seat. I have yet to land any sizeable fish with it yet. But I am sure it will be just like my old one which is great.

I went to Wal-Mart to get some groceries. And of course I had to go down the fishing aisle. I saw they had a War Eagle Finesse spinnerbait. I have one in Purple Shad and the fish can't seem to resist it a lot of the times. Normally within 5 cast I will catch one. So when I saw they had a different color, Mouse, I figured I would pick one up. We will see if it is as good as the Purple Shad.

Thanks. I was just sharing my thoughts with the forum. I thought that was okay to do. I do plan on telling St Croix.

I have to say the more I check out this new Trigon Mojo Bass rod, most of it I like. But I have to say, and it saddens me to say it. The reel seat is horrible. It feels so cheap. I compared the amount of movement to my other Mojo Bass spinning rod and the Trigon allows the reel to move a lot more. And it just feels like very cheap plastic. The reel seat on my Ugly Stick Premium and regular is much better. What was St Croix thinking? Maybe I am wrong and it is a better one than I think. But it sure doesn't feel like it. And to raise the price as much as they have compared to the discontinued Mojo Bass. If I was buying this from a store and was able to check it out I would not have bought it. I really hate saying this. I look forward to hearing what others will say about it and see if it is just my opinion that is like this.

I'm Still Sick About It
My new rod came today. And I am shocked. I was in management in retail years ago and dealing with manufacturers I learned that most, when they discontinue a model and come out with a new one. They hold on to some of the old ones so they have them for warranty replacements. I was expecting the same rod I had. But I guess St Croix does not do that for warranty replacements because I got a brand new Trigon as a replacement. It came at 12:45 so I went to a local pond to give it a go. At one point I got snagged and of course at first I thought it was a fish. I noticed my reel moved around in the grip. I had tightened it like normal. So I tightened it as tight as I could. If I hold the reel and twist the rod a little it still moves a little bit but I could live with it. I have not noticed this on my other St Croix. It has different guides and maybe it is my imagination, but it seems to cast a little smoother and farther. I also noticed the whole rod does not have a finish on the whole rod. Just around the decals and the guide wrappings. I guess this is trying to save a little weight. I like the glossy coating on the old one but I can live with this. The grip that they are making a big deal over is okay. I could take it or leave it. It's not something I would look for in another rod. So that's a quick comparison between the original Mojo Bass and the new Trigon.

I only got one fishing item when I went to Cabelas this past week. I have a friend that likes to go shooting once a week. Well we went so much I went through all my ammo so I had to get a little bit so we can go shooting together again. He sometimes gives me ammo to clean his guns. He hates doing it. But he hasn't needed any done lately. Anyways. After spending over 2 hours looking at stuff to get and changing my mind a million times. It is hard when you have limited funds and you want to take the whole store home with you. LOL I found they had a Chatterbait Elite for $5.99. So I bought one. I should have gotten both. Duh. It is a color I have never seen. Redbone. I looked around for trailers for it for a long time. Decided to just use what I have at home. The green pumpkin pearl looks pretty good.

Well, you all were right. A brand new rod is coming my way. They even cut the $50 fee in half to help me out. What a company. But what galyonj said is totally correct. They will get a lot of positive exposure from this at the cost of a rod which is probably not as much as we would think. I wonder if I will get one of the new Mojo Bass rods since they discontinued my rod. But I doubt it. I am sure they have some there just for a situation like this.

WOW! That would be amazing. That would make this fat, disabled guy do a dance. LOL

I'm Still Sick About It
I actually just got a response from my email and they told me to put in a warranty claim. I feel kinda bad about doing that because it was totally 100% my fault. But they told me to so I did. It might be to my advantage that my rod is being discontinued. They might really want to get rid of them. If I remember I will post what they have to say.

I'm Still Sick About It
Thanks for the replies guys. I know they sometimes offer replacement rods at a discount. But I meant it when I said I have no money I can put into a replacement. I know some people have a hard time understanding that. But if you saw my disability check I get each month, you might better understand. I did email them. If I don't hear back from them after a while I will call just to see what they might do. But I have a feeling I would be wasting my time due to my limited income.

What's your lightest...
I know I am not in you guys world. But I was curious so I weighed two of mine that I thought would be my lightest. And the winner is my St Croix Mojo Bass MJC71XHF with my Daiwa Tatula CT at 12.24 ounces. That is with 15-pound Seaguar 15lb Fluorocarbon on it.

I'm Still Sick About It
Two Mondays ago I was in NJ visiting my sister. We always fish together when I do. She takes so much stuff I need to use my rod carrier that attaches to the hand grabbers in the vehicle. As I was packing up I was putting my most used rod and one of my most expensive into the holder. My 1999 GMC Yukon had rear A/C with vents in the ceiling. The tip of my St Croix Mojo Bass 6'8" MXF spinning rod tip went into the vent. I could not get it out. Tried several things. Decided to just break the vent so I could spread the plastic to get it out. When I stuck my knife in the vent and hit it. instead of the vent breaking it turned and snapped the tip. Now I know these aren't expensive to most. But to me, it might as well cost $1000. Since I bought it my disability income has been cut by 25% so there is no saving up to replace it. I bought a repair kit from Wally World and put on a new one. But when I look at it I just get sick to my stomach and mad. I hate it when things aren't right. It took me a week to even try it and see how it fishes. But I have noticed my casting distance has been cut by 30%. It only broke an inch and a half off the rod. I didn't expect this much of a difference. I think part of it is the crappy tip I put on it. I need to find a tip like what it had. Sorry to vent but I figured I would share my accident with some people who understand.

What did you accomplish?
I had some goals for this year. And accomplished some things I did not set as goals. There were 2 lures I wanted to catch my first LMB on. And I did. One was a spinnerbait. Yes. I had never caught a bass on a spinnerbait. The second was a jig. I was thinking of a football or arkie-style jig. And I did. But I also caught my first LMB on a swim jig. And it was my largest bass so far this year. I also wanted to fish more plastic lures. I guess technically less of one plastic lure and more of others. I wanted to try large worms. And I caught a good number of them on some. The most on the Ol' Monster. But also on a 7-inch Stick-O and Magnum Trick worms. Fished a lot of finesse and trick worms. I normally fished the finesse worm instead of the lure I hardly fished at all this year—the Ned Rig. Have not caught any on the 12-inch Jelly worm yet. And probably won't this year as it is quickly changing into the season I hate. Stinking, freezing horrible winter. And the worst part of it is it keeps me from fishing. Now that it proves it is an evil, nasty season. I also wanted to catch a bass on my Savage Gear 3D Rat and Snake. I was half successful. I caught one on the rat. The funny thing is the rat was bigger than the bass. So much for catching bigger bass on bigger lures. And finally, I wanted to catch more fish than I did the previous year. I have been back to fishing after an 18-year pause due to health and becoming disabled. I can't walk too far or stand too long so I use a power chair. Saying this to explain my fish count. Some catch more in a day than I do in a year. But I do what I can. 2 years ago I caught a whopping 28 fish. That includes sunfish and all. Last year I caught 58. This year I am at 85 so far. So I accomplished that. Last year I caught my PB LMB at 4lbs 4oz. I was hoping to break it this year, but I knew it was unlikely. But I did catch a fair amount of 3+ pounders. The biggest so far this year was 3lbs 8oz. Not bad for a northern old disabled guy who mostly fishes small ponds. This post has been way too long. If you are reading this still you deserve a medal. God bless and tight lines, Bill

Wal Mart
I always check out the fishing aisle in Walmart. But Only when I go alone. Which is 99% of the time. My wife hates Walmart. I am disabled so I go when she is at work to get some "groceries." And I can't help it if some things jump into my basket as I go down the aisle. I have about 25% of the lures I do because of groceries. Part of me wishes they had a better selection and more good stuff. But I would have a hard time explaining why I spent $50 and only got a half gallon of milk. LOL I am currently trying to figure out how to get a tackle bag I found there to become groceries. I really wish Cabela's and Bass Pro Shop sold groceries too.

Favorite Lure company and why
I have a lot of companies I am loyal to. I could not name one. I could name one under each category. Hard baits - Rapala Plastics - Zoom Spinnerbaits/ Buzzbaits - War Eagle

Favorite Lure company and why
Just one? This is tough. I understand why some people have certain brands due to all that they make. Part of me wants to say Zoom. As they make soft plastics that work all year and aren't to expensive. Another part of me wants to say Mepp's because they catch all kinds of species of fish and are simple and durable. Then another wants to say Rapala. Make all kinds of lures that also catch all kinds of fish. I just can't pick one.

What’s a “good” day in your books?
Being a disabled bank fisherman the most I have caught in a day is 5. I have caught that many 3 times. Including yesterday. Yesterday was the best because they weren't any dinks in the bunch. For me catching a fish is enough to make it a good day. There are to many days I get skunked. So any fish makes it better.

Barbs
I have been going barbless after seeing what the barb is doing to them. At one time I only went barbless on my small treble hook items. You can really mess a fish up when they are small. I think why people don't use barbless is either ignorance, or they simply don't care about the fish. They have no respect for it being a living, feeling animal. They feel it is more important for them to slightly lessen their chance of losing a fish than the health of the fish. The other day I hooked a smaller bass and was using a barbless hook. It hooked the fish in the edge of the eye. If I had been using the barbed hook I know for sure he would have lost that eye. I would have felt awful if I had done that. As a side note. Bass and other fishing organizations that run tournaments are going to go totally barbless according to some behind the scenes. If you fight a fish properly you will not lose many or any more than if you used a barbed hook. Bottom line is what is more important to you? Keeping the fish healthy? Or make sure you can boat flip it into your boat and hold it for a minute or two before you let it go. If you are going to keep them, then it doesn't matter. Bill

Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
About a month ago I got some trick worms and some magnums. I use the magnums the most. I will say I love them and I have caught a fair amount of fish with them. And I lost a monster. Some idiot locked their drag down so while fighting it the hook came out right at the wall. My sister is slow since she is disabled. I am too but I don't move that slow. Especially when someone has a whale on the line. At first, I only had green pumpkin in both thick and magnum. I now have more. I highly recommend them. I have had issues hooking up with a shaky head. So for now I just Texas rig them until I figure out what I am doing wrong. And it works great.

Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
I have been fishing a lot more plastics this year. Went to Cabelas to get some new colors of Zoom Magnum Trick and regular trick worms. Of course, they had no Magnums. None at all. I am exactly between a Bass Pro Shops and a Cabelas. I hate driving to Bass Pro. It is in more city driving with construction that has been going on for the past 30 years. But the store is far superior to cabelas. Better staff. Better stock. Organized in a way that makes more sense. So I am always torn. Drive in an area I hate to go to a store I love. Or have a nice drive and go to a store I hate. I almost always regret going to Cabelas. One day I will learn. When I got home I went on to BassPro.com and checked. They had everything I wanted in stock. Ugggg. So since they didn't have half of what I wanted I got the Yum Mighty Worms. They look good. I will try it out next week. I really like how those Owner hooks look with BIG worms. I will need to get more.

Frogs on an MH Rod?
I fish all kinds of frogs on my mhf rod. With 50lb braid tied directly to the frog. Never had a issue. My favorite frog is a 6th sense. But I can't remember what it's called. I'd have to look it up. But it is a larger frog.
