  1. W2S, how biga boat is it going on. I'd love to have the ten, but realistically the 8 would workout better on my stratos 176 XT. "Space" would be my deciding factor since I can afford either one. Sometimes bigger is not always better. I've learned the hard way. Nick
  2. x4 i like the Arkansas shiner even better Nick O
  3. So I guess your drag works just fine. Huh? Congrats And yeah, I'm a little envious. Nick O
  4. Since you're already in Maitland Patrick, you have the winter Park Chain right near you (requires a launch fee or annual Decal for motorized vessels).A little south of you is Lake Ivanhoe, north of you is Lake Underhill. Just depends how far you want to drive. I'm over in Winter Springs and there area more lakes to fish within 20-30 minutes drive than I can learn. PM for more info. Nick O
  5. Patrick, do have a boat or are you shore bound? This bit of info will make a big diff in the replies you get. Nick O
  6. I've had the Powell Max 683 for about 2 yrs now. I would say the 683 is a little too lite for your desired applications. The tip is more suited to treble hook applications. Smaller cranks and topwaters. It is a great rod for what it was intended. A 684, 704 or a 734 might better be suited for you. I've got these as well. Nick O
  7. Great page, covers most of what we have. I have the page loaded in my iPhone for easy ref. Thanks SFBA
  8. Ok here is the skinny as I understand it. A few years ago Davie Wooten who I believe guides on the white river was coaching a young angler for an Olympic competition. He showed him the Davey knot because it was strong (85%) and very quick to tie. The idea being that the knot was going to be retied after a fish or two anyway. So the speed in tying the knot was what it was all about. Got that? It came about in the course of fly fishing. I've used it for that purpose only for several years now. Bear in mind that I'm tying tippets from 2 - 6 lb. For it's intended purpose it's great. Do I use it on anything else? Nope. "That's all I've got to say about that" Forest Gump

  12. http://www.seaeagle.com/FramelessPontoonBoats.aspx I built a dolly for mine out of a 1x12 and some old wheel barrow wheels, a couple of 10 inch bolts, some u bolts and some washers. These things are nearly indestructible. I use them to float the rivers in N. GA. for trout. I've got the 2 man and the one man. Nick O
  13. X2 Hog feed is cheap, $11 for 50#. I've found that a #16 or 18 Dry fly hook with the barb pinched down works well. I'll bait the area the night before and when I come back I'll throw some oatmeal out. If the shiners are there you'll know it. They will boil the water. The barbless hooks have less trauma to the shiners in hook removal. They are more fragile than you think. Instead of bread balls, try "Crappie Nibbles" Powerbait. Cut each/nibble pellet into 8 pieces. It holds to the hook better than bread or dough balls. This time of year you will want to keep the water cool, if you're using the lake/river water put frozen bottles of water in the tank. You can use city water if you use Shiner Start by Sure Life http://www.sure-life.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=33&category_id=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=55 . The Shiner start really helps condition them. Whether you net them or use cane poles & small hooks. Take the kids with you they'll enjoy helping catch the shiners. In the winter I can keep 5-6 dozen in a 20 gal tank for a week. But in the summer like this I use them as soon as I catch them. It also helps to have more than one shiner hole. Hope this helps. Tight Lines Nick O Gawd I can't believe I just said all that.
  14. I've caught fish on the shad & the BBZ-1 Swimbait 6" in slow sink/Blue herring. My pref is the 6" BBZ. I still can't get used to the Shad & it's windmilling. Guess I'm a glutton for punishment. :-/ Nick O
  15. I squeeze the frog every once in a while too, BUT... only when my partner isn't looking. :-[
  16. A flavor of Florida! I had the good luck to go fishing last Saturday morning. This was a good thing... but after a short time I ran out of live bait. I was sitting there deciding what I was going to do about bait. Then over to the side I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Wild Turkey and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same snake with two frogs in his mouth. Life is good in Florida. :
