  1. Howdy from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Nice intro, got any pictures of that 9lb 14 ouncer?
  2. Sorry to hear of it.
  3. I use 2 piece rods when I have to for size restriction in vehicles, such as going with a friend in a small car. I've had several occasions when the rod tip went along with my lure when casting. Other than giving your fishing buddies a good laugh, it's annoying as heck.

First, welcome to BassResource! Thank you for sharing. Interesting that a Walmart spinnerbait does well for you. I have a couple... I'll have to give them another go.

I appreciate everyone sharing. In my specific case, the lake we fish, we can fish all day, changing lures and spots and never catch a fish. @riverratryan and I fished it yesterday for about 6 hours together, on the small end which is two large ponds connected to the main lake via channels, and he got 1 bass on a flat sided crankbait. There was at well over a dozen other people fishing too. Some for bass, some for cats and carp, some bluegill or crappie. It has that much pressure every evening from about 3 until dark when the lake closes. We watch what other people use. There is a lot of ned rigs, soft plastics, chatterbaits, and topwater. And of course a mishmash of typical bass gear. I've never seen anyone using scent. If they are using it, its most likely something bought local. I am thinking something a bit more obscure or custom made might help.
  6. Heck... It's not uncommon for me to respool (on a backer) with Big Game a couple times a month on my most used reels. It's just too cheap not to use fresh line whenever needed. Not worth loosing a $5.00 lure for .50 of line.
  7. Mostly in between but often on the clearer side of middle. Rarely on the very muddy side.
  8. I appreciate this conversation, thanks all for sharing.
  9. Roll casting in tight bank fishing spots it's hard to beat a 5'6" rod.

I appreciate everyone sharing. I haven't fished one in a while, but I've caught a lot of bass on one some years back. One of my favorite lures.
  11. I'll preface this by saying, I'm looking for an edge for a heavily pressured public lake I frequent. BUT, I also am looking for an edge in not so pressured waters (ain't we all?). I don't use anything for attractant. I know for reaction baits it probably wouldn't add anything. Correct me if I'm wrong please. But what about jigs and soft plastics? Is it worth having in my arsenal? If so, what does everyone like? I tried Berkley Powerbait Attractant https://www.berkley-fishing.com/powerbait-attractant-1285474https://www.berkley-fishing.com/powerbait-attractant-1285474 when I was younger and I don't recall it making any difference. I probably didn't use it enough to give it a fair shake though. Thanks for reading.
  12. I haven't tried the lighter stuff, but the 10 pound (I think it was) was a nightmare on my spinning reel. I gave it what it wanted - the pocket knife, and respooled. Heck I put Big Game on my boys Zebco and we don't have a problem. He loves the bright green color. I've ran it on spinning gear too, but It's not as managable as others. Thanks, I've been wondering about BPS Excel. Anyone else use it?
  13. Thanks all for sharing. I've been thinking about getting some hair jigs. What colors other than black work for bass? Largemouth in particular. Not saying I won't go with black, just wanting other color options. @riverratryan and I were just talking about this the other day.
  14. Dale Hollow is on my list of places to go, though I've not been there yet. Course, it's legendary as the home of the World Record Smallie!
  15. Lots of good information being shared here. Thanks for starting this discussion @OmegaDPW.

I've caught a lot of bass using a black Jitterbug. In a world of whopper ploppers and fake rats/birds/snakes they are a classic standby.
  17. Howdy from the hills of Kentucky.
  18. There are many lures and many water types I've not mastered yet. I do the best on ponds, or perhaps small lakes. I do not do well, at least not yet, on the water where there is no visible structure. I do best in shallow water. I do want to learn though. I want to learn river fishing, lake fishing, winter fishing. I also want to learn lures that I'm not familiar or confident in. Jigs, chatterbaits, creature baits, jerkbaits. One thing that I have taken upon myself to do though is get to thoroughly know my local lake. It's heavily pressured. I figure that will grow a fishing skillset that will directly correlate to any other situation.
  19. I've done a little hunting, but it didn't run in my family, so I'm starting against a hard learning curve. I've killed a few deer and squirrels. My boy who is 4 though, has the itch because I do, and he'll grow up hunting, and his kids will hear about grandpa. I can see how the 30-06 is a great rifle for all around big game, and even small game with reduced loads. I even have taken a deer with an 06, but... it ain't my style. I prefer leverguns and rimmed cartridges. So 30-30, 44 Magnum, 45-70, and of course 22 LR. That said, yeah... I've been thinking about getting another 06, probably a Ruger M77. The 06 lends itself to shooting cast bullets pretty good, and that's another thing I have a passion for. Reloading and casting are as much fun as the guns themselves.
  20. Of all the game meat I've ever tried, black bear steak and roast was the best. It was a friend's church that held a game banquet. There was some duck there that was delicious too. I had a friend that gave me a cooked deer roast once, and it was amazing. Very nice flavor. No idea what he did to it. I do know he's a wild man and will cook and eat about anything, so he has lot of experience with game. I've made some decent deer roasts in the crockpot myself... but not like that.
  21. I'm not an old timer here, but because I got back into fishing last year after a long break, I joined here. I am on several gun forums and on bladeforums, also a woodworking forum. These are my passions, and I want to talk about them, read about them, and contribute where I can. For guns, I am on several forums, with 1 being primarily dedicated to casting/reloading. Then several forums are of interest because they focus on my love of leverguns. One forum, I just liked the folks. Another... when I had my old phone and it didn't work well, I joined because it was the only one that would work on my phone. I still talk there regularly. Some I talk on daily, some not so much. I've made friends off forums before, some are very good friends now. I enjoy the community here. Thanks to all who contribute.
  22. I'm going to work on Jigs, Chatterbaits, Hellgrammites, and Brush Hogs. I've never had much success on the first two, and just am getting into the latter. I got a good feeling about them all though.
  23. Sorry to hear of it.
  24. If it's not horrible, I've always been able to clear it by pulling on loops. I've never been able to clear a monster like that no matter how much I picked.
  25. I have always used mono for my casting reels, but last night @riverratryan came over with some spool ends and I put braid (with a backer) on my favorite. Thanks again Ryan! Guess we'll see how long it lasts.
