Best Baitcasting Reel for topwater Frogs, Whopper Plopper style baits - under $250?
JDM zillion is so far ahead of everything else that it'd be a shame if you skipped it, and grabbed something inferior. All those Tats and Curados are nothing but toys compared to a JDM Zillion. A complete waste of money.

Has the 21 Zillion made the Metanium & Aldebaran kinda irrelevant?
I baby my reels so much that i'd prefer losing a PB than scratching my custom td ito🤭

Diawa JDM reel users; 22 Zillion TW HD 1000HL
At these prices, the Met is certainly in trouble.

And the 12 ball bearings upgrade that i did, which are all the black bearings from the steez sv tw, this reel is so smooth under load that you're just not getting any smoother when going higher end.

Daiwa is too dumb to have em. Both were transfered from a steez a.

I find the ray's spool to look super cheap and the plastic collar and engine cover still being on the reel is destroying the looks of the zillion to me.

You replace those ugly plastic parts like the engine cover and the zero adjuster cap, and these reels are instanly much higher end looking.

It absolutely did. I didn't bother mentioning it because the Met was already more popular anyways.

Do we actually know when their patent expires?

Low profile and as light as possible to balance out on a non tip heavy rod. Of course this fits the bill for many other reels, but when it comes to the higher end reels, this is the reel that i kept hearing the most before 2021.

Before the Zillion came out, the metanium was far more suggested in the higher-mid to high end baitcasters, and Aldebaran was always the jerkbait reel. Ever since 2021, all i ever hear is Zillion this and that, and its as if the two shimano reels were almost deleted from everyone's conversation. I don't know if its the $210 price from Japan for the Zillion, its gear set that doesn't go buzzy within a season, or just the whole package, but i have certainly noticed over the last couple of years that when a Shimano reel is suggested, its always the low end (SLX/Curado) or the conquest, since its arguably the best round reel on the market.

New JDM reels - 2024 Model Year.. who's buying?
Metanium DC when it drops in price in a year from now. Would get the steez as well, but the non 34mm spool is a deal breaker.

dc casting reels
What i find kinda weird is that folks are still saying that DC is all that impressive in windy conditions. Yes, when this braking system was originally introduced in the early 2000's, Daiwa's braking system was MagV, which is very fast and tempered, so it wasn't too hot in windy conditions. But then, MagZ was introduced, and it was already pretty good. Then, in the early 2010's, SV was introduced, and ever since, it has far surpassed DC reels for windy conditions. Just like with skipping, its much better in heavy wind. I've owned 2 Metanium MG DC, 1 Conquest 50 DC and one 2015 Met DC. They were all good reels, and the sound is cool, especially in the early Conquest DC reels, but them casting further than long range casting spools from daiwa like the RCS1016, Type R, Type R+ spools, etc, that's just marketing snake oil. They might help you cast further if you're new to baitcasters, but if you've been using them for a long time, DC braking add nothing but additional weight to the spool and a cool sound.
