  1. Anyone fishing Shearon Harris? I plan to take my son (7 years old) out next Sunday and want to catch some fish since he is always "bored" when we go fishing if we don't catch a few in the first half hour : Anyone know if the bream are shallow? I'm Planning to fish for everything. Bream, catfish, bass. Anything that will bite. Taking worms, crickets, minnows and of course 50 pounds of bass lures 8-) I'd love to put him on some bass but I know Harris bass are well educated and it takes a while to figure'em out. Thanks for any info!
  2. Anyone fishing Gambler soft plastics? I picked up some Ugly Otters in the discount bin and I'm very impressed with the bait. Great texture, action, and the bait is impregnated with some scent much like the Berkley power baits. Looks like a winner to me, I'm going to pick up some of their lizards when I see them.
  3. Can you imagine how long it would take a hook to rust out? Better to try and remove it IMHO.
  4. I don't cuss often, but if I'm fishing on a windy day I cuss like a sailor.
  5. I'm in Holly Springs, about 5 miles from Shearon Harris Reservoir. The Little River Reservoir is fantastic, wish I lived a bit closer to that lake! I mainly fish Bass Lake, Lake Benson and Shearon Harris. Just discovered the Cape Fear river is a good place to fish, going to try that some too.
  6. Thanks for the link. Swallowed baits are what I fear the most, I've been pretty lucky so far this year.
  7. About the rain...I've had the same thing happen to me. Like you said it's like flipping a light switch.
  8. Can you post a link to the pair you bought a bass pros?
  9. Good article in this month's Bassmaster magazine. The article basically said that the shad move into the shallows to spawn overnight and move out when the sun rises. So a good pattern to work during the shad spawn is to get out crazy early and fish shallow until the sun rises, then it's basically over until the sun goes down again.
  10. Wayne, where did you find that circuit breaker? My local auto shops have breakers but they only go up to 30 amps or so.
  11. That's terrifific My little girl wouldn't have gone within 10 feet of that frog. Looks like you have a real live one on your hands, good luck in 13 years
  12. Yeah the boat traffic is insane. Gary says he often drifts with the current but on Saturday we caught them better while anchored. Gary was happy cuz he didn't have to pick his way through the boat parking lot while drifting
  13. My brother-in-law and I fished the Roanoke River striper spawn Saturday April 26. This is about as close to "fishing in a barrel" as you can get. The stripers swim up from the ocean to spawn and there are hundreds of thousands of fish. We caught an estimated 40 fish between 7am and 12pm. All fish ranged from 16 to 22 inches. There are strict regulations on what's considered a "keeper" we ended up with 4 keepers. All fish were caught on live bait (heron). We used circle hooks without barb in order to release the fish unharmed. We kept three to eat but the 4th keeper was full of eggs and went back to finish her business. We were guided by Gary Knight of and I must give Gary an A++. He was excellent company, provided top-notch live bait and service. He knew some holes that the fish seemed to like and from what I could see we out-fished the boats around us. All-in-all an amazing amount of fun!! Massive line at the 2-lane boat ramp 6:30am Biggest of the day (22 inches) 18-inch Striper River is loaded with boats! Gary Knight (Right) and Me (Left)
  14. I ran into a similar scenario at a local pond. Bass were shallow with lots of action. I think they were spawning and the action was them chasing the egg-eaters away. They ignored all top-water and minnow type baits. I had fantastic success with a texas rigged lizard however. Give a lizard a try, and like others said throw some top-water to see if the action really is active feeding.
  15. I've been slowly replacing my cheap stuff (i.e. $50 combos) and there is definitely a difference in quality. I especially notice it in how smooth the drag is when a fish is pulling, and how smooth it cranks. The more expensive gear is also more durable because more parts are made of metal (instead of plastic). I'm not buying the super expensive stuff but going from a "cheap" spinning reel to a Symetre is quite noticable. I smile whenever I'm using my Symetre reel on my favorite rod. Having said all that, I took one of my cheap combo to the park the other day and caught four fatties ( ranging from 3 to 4 pounds) and it did just fine! As far as durability goes I've had the spool adjuster break off a cheap Mitchel reel when dropped. I've had the drag adjuster on a cheap Abu Garcia fall apart while fishing. Durability is another big factor.
  16. You hit a gold mine, they don't come around too often
  17. Surfer, that's a great idea! Did you attach a PVP pipe or something to your boat to push the pole through? I'm salivating at the idea
  18. Spinnerbaits are a great bait in this type of structure, they rarely get hung up. Toss it out and let it sink down, then slow roll it through the structure. When you feel it come over something, stop your retrieve and let it flutter down. Deadly.
  19. Fantastic tourney. The miniture trophies at the end had me rolling. One of my favorite shows!
  20. You might want to try your question at the iboats.com forums. There seems to be some real experts lurking on those forums. http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=27 Regards
  21. I'll never understand cruelty, it's just not part of me.
  22. The most valued commodity to these people is probably time, since they most likely work like crazy to afford such a home. Offer to cut their grass, wash cars, look after their kids, teach their kids how to fish. Basically, trade doing a favor for them for getting to fish the lake.
  23. Thanks NY Fish. I discovered my local landfill has a hazardous disposal facility, so I can just take it there.
  24. My 9.9 outboard decided to quit working. I want to replace the gas in the tank just to eliminate that as a potential problem. Problem is, how do you throw away 2-3 gallons of already mixed gas?
  25. Thanks for the reply. I am using last year's gas but I had stabilizer in the gas. A fresh tank sure wouldn't hurt, but how do you dispose of gas? I'll also replace the spark plugs. Another clue is for some reason lubricant starting coming out a hole near the top of the lower unit. This is unusual and has never happened before. I changed the lower unit lubricant when I bought the motor last year and fished with it several times after changing it. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problem.
