Without going into this too deeply we need to agree what a point is. We can agree that a point is a structure or point of land that extends underwater. Where I live and fish the topography is mountainous with man made lakes created by dams flooding canyons or river valleys. The ridges that extend underwater become points. Points can also be created by river channel swings and can have only a few feet of depth change in a natural lake. Lots of definitions depending on the lake type or classification. On deep structured lakes points are obvious and have steep depth changes on the sides and may extend several hundred feet out into the lake basin or river arms. Main lake basin points that extend over a hundred feet down into the original river channel are called major points that often divide the lakes river arms. There are secondary points located inside bays or river/ creek arms. How you fish a points depends on the type of point, it's Location and depth and the seasonal periods. Please define the type of point and seasonal period. Tom

Depends on seasonal periods, predominate prey available and type of bass. Crawdads are a source of high protein and prefered during pre spawn when the craws become active and start moving out from cold water burrows. Summer is mostly young of the year baitfish, whatever falls in the water and shad if available. Fall shad and a variety of baitfish and crawdads. Winter crawdads make up a portion of the meals along with baitfish. Largemouth eat a wider variety of prey then Smallmouths that prefer crawdads bottom dewellers like sculpin and other baitfish. Good combination at a reasonable price, however.....you need to let the teen earn this so he has some skin in the game. Talk to his mon and figure out a allowance plan to help payback a few bucks toward this rod/reel, line, etc.Tom

Ice out creates a turnover and the water mixed killing the shad due to cold water temps. The pit is more than likey spring feed with water warmer than 45 degrees, the lower limit for shad. Tom

Originally sniper was limited to pound test under 10 ans was available in clear only. Super Sniper has replaced theoriginal Shooter and is available up to 20 lb test and clear ot green colors. For general bass fishing, including jigs and T-rigs, Super Sniper works good. Tom

It doesn't matter if it's functional, the new rod has a flaw that bothers you, contact the rod makers and they should have a 30 to 90 day free return clause. Exchange the rod and make sure it's inspected before shipping. It's your money and you shouldn't be having this issue and you will not be happy later on. Tom

The risk factor for ANYTHING made in China is buying counterfeit products. There isn't any laws to protect the buyer in China...buyer beware! Metals may or may not meet specifications so some manufacturers supply the metals to help solve that issue. Quality control is another problem, manufactures need to be on site to monitor quality control. There are some excellent products made in China and under the same label counterfeit products. The only way to avoid problems is to avoid made in China products. Tom

Catt is the night fishing expert on this site. I really love to fish at because we don't have bugs in SoCal, however our lakes are closed to night fishing except for few nights each month between May to September for tournaments. So if I night fish it's some type of fund raiser derby or sanctioned tournament. The events are only 6 hours that start at 8 P to 2 P or sometimes 6P to 12P. These events you use everything plus the night stuff after dark. Winning weights average over 25 lbs, big bass are active during the late afternoon through sundown, then tend to scatter. My preference for dark nights are dark colored lures; black/red crankbaits, black/blue T-rig big worms and jigs, double buzzers, single spin spinnerbait, rat wake baits and musky Jitter Bug. Tom

Talking rods in a lure thread seems off topic, it isn't. Swimbaits are application specific lures and trying to select smaller light weight swimmers because you don't have the right rod limits what type and where you can use a swimbait. The Okuma med-hvy swimbait 7"11" rod is very versatile for several lures up to 3 oz.; deep diving 3/4-1 oz crankbaits for example. The 5"-7" swimmers and wake baits of all types can be fished with this rod effectively. If you plan on using heavier swimmers like 8" Hudd or Slammers, then go with a 7'11" heavy, still works well with the 1 oz lures. Not familiar with Daiwa musky rods. Most musky rods would be too heavy and designed to cast lures 4 to 8 oz, plus the handles tend to be long to make figure circles near the boat. I would save $$ and wait for a sale on Okuma or equal med-hvy swimbait rod for the lures you plan to use. I started using a musky rods for swim baits, because I had one and it was difficult to use. Invest in a swimbait rod, flipping rods are not designed to cast swimbaits. Okuma guide special swimbait med/hvy rods are about $100, well worth the $$. Tom

The original Black Dog Shell Cracker 5' swimmer is about 3 oz with hooks and a good swimbait, you will need a med-hvy to heavy swimbait rod for these. Not familiar with the smaller G2 model, other than watching the video. Tom

First remove the rusted hooks and split rings. Soak over night in a mixture of white vinager, baking soda and warm water; 1 part each vinager and baking soda to 4 parts water. rinse and scrub with a tooth brush. If this doesn't clean them, then hang them in you dish washer using standard dish washer soap in cool water setting, not the hot setting. Should be clean and ready to hang new hooks. Aviod scrubbing with anything that removes the original finish. Tom

Without knowing the type of laker (reservior) it becomes a guessing game as Catt has pointed out and you don't need to fish blindly with a wide variety of lures during pre spawn/spawn, or any other period. Answer Catts ?? focus on specific areas with lures that work in the the type of cover and depth the bass should be at. Hook sizes aren't standardized and worms don't have the same body diameters so length to hook size is meaningless. Think about hook gap distance verses worm diameters; 2 to 1 is about right, 3 to 1 is max. Tom

I don't use small swimmers, the S Waver is a glide bait more than a wake bait. The key with wake and swimbaits is learning to slow down your presentation technique and staying with it. Good water clarity is important and fishing areas known to have baitfish concentrations. Pre spawn major and secondary points are prime targets, post spawn the same areas. Tom

Weedless wacky hooks by Gamakatsu, Owner and VMC all work very well. The size doesn't need to be larger than size 2 for 1/4" diameter worms, size 2/0 for Senko's. Also look into wacky style jigs in 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8 oz for wacky worms. Jackall makes a premium tungsten wacky jig along with Gamakatsu and Owner that have a weedless style that are excellent. Tom.
