JDM Zillion has a aluminum primary gear the US is brass gear. I would make sure the gear is properly lubricated when casting heavier lures like the A-rigs. Tom

Casting lures 1/8 oz is only 1 factor. The lure aerodynamics affects to how well it can be cast, the line type and diameter and the rods action is even more important. Saying the difference between 1/8 and 3/16 oz is only 1/16 oz is correct but it’s also 50% weight difference. Looking at JDM portals both 2021 Daiwa zillion and Steez reels are offered under $250! Amazing prices. If I was still buying reels that is a no brainer. Tom

Living Rubber skirts tend to stay puffed out in lieu of folding back like silicone or hair on the fall, slows the ROF slightly. NorthStar Hairy series jig are a combination of living Rubber and hair creating natural movements in lieu of faster movement that tend to appeal to cold water bass. Silicone offer a vast variety of colors. Soft plastic injection molded jig trailer with flapping trails and appendages stiffen in cold water where as hand pored soft plastics remain softer. Pork rind trailers have the action in cold or warm water with slower natural movement. It comes down to confidence, keep an open mind and try them all. Tom

The question was asked if I had any updates since the original in 1974 and got me thinking after 48 years what could be added? The information was mostly anecdotal based on a decade of experience and using instant read thermometer to measure bass body temps when in my 20’s. Looking back seasonal periods based on water temperatures and activity levels was a frontier at that time period. All my experience at that time was primarily in local deep rocky structure High Land So Cal reservoirs, a few trip to Mexico fishing for Northern strain LMB and a few years targeting Florida strain LMB. This time period included the beginning of big swim baits but didn’t include off shore structure fishing or suspended bass other then recognizing their existence. If there is an interest in updating it would be pure anecdotal observed bass behavior learned the past nearly 50 years. Tom

Use a Atwood anchor lift to manually winch the rope up or let it down. Tom

Change to 30# braid and use the 10# you have as filler. Looks like the spooled line is about 1/2 full from the photo you attached, 30# /.011D braid should fill the spool about 1/16” to 1/8” below the spool rim with close to 75 yards of line. Tom

I don't do video but you can see for yourself the nuances of a hair jig with locating pork trailer by casting it into clear water and watching it closely. What you should see is the hair tightened together as it falls, the trailer swimming with natural movements. Watch what happens when the jig hit bottom.....very important. The hair pops open and moves, the trailer stands up waving, it looks alive. Bass watching this life like movements strike. It doesn’t matter what the jig looks like out of the water it’s in the water that counts. Tom

All caught between January to March during pre spawn. The giant females are older fish near the end of their growth cycle. The 19.3 was a old bass and more then likely close to WR weight 2 years earlier. Spawning is hard on old female bass and takes time to recover if the do recover. During the summer they do put on weight and some of that weight is growing eggs. I believe the major growth time is between 10 to 12 years old in SoCal where they live about 15 years old. Tom

How do you know the rod wall thickness? Most MH casting granite rod blanks measured near the reel seat will be close to 1/2” diameter. Tom

The big bass see what looks like+prey the feed in the seasonal period doesn’t matter. Hudd top hook 68 ROF 12 in black shad looks close enough to herring to work if you have swimbait tackle. I would fish swimbaits between 11A-2P bright sunny days with light wind. Jigs as mentioned everyday regardless of the weather. Tom

Big bass have learned not to chase smaller bait fish, the effort isn’t worth calories burned...still hunger. If the lake has an abundance of larger high protein bait fish easy to eat then swimbaits that replicate that prey source is a good. If the bass are being bombarded by big swimbaits they tend to avoid them. Out west Rainbow trout are planted when the water temps drop to 60 degrees or lower, nothing has higher protein or easier to eat for big bass. That era is over in SoCal. Crawdads however continue to be the high protein prey everywhere and jigs replicate crawdads. Simple choice. Tom

To catch big bass you need to fish for them in lieu of hoping to run across 1. I am a believer in Moon phases during pre spawn and when the 5 full moon phase occurs during the night, not when the moon is up during daytime for big bass. Catching bass in general during cold water period target bass feeding on bait fish using structure spoons, under spins, swim jigs crank baits. Big bass stick with jigs up north. Tom

If I was fishing where you are during the cold water period for big bass my lure selection would be simple old school Hair jigs with #11 pork frog. NorthStar hairy brown and hairy black hair-living rubber jigs in 1/2 and 3/4 oz with Uncle Josh # 11 brown and black pork trail. Keep it simple and use 12# FC line and work major points and rock slides from 2’ to 40’. Cast and let sink until the line jumps slack, turn the reel handle 1 turn and repeat. Shake the jig out of any snags and Shake about every 5’ depth change. Focus focus focus the strike are very light so watch your line closely! Tom

Braid does a few thing better then mono/cploy/ FC lines and that cuts through aquatic vegetation. The noise is in your head, FINS original PRC is quite coated braid. Use it straight no leader. Tom
