High end is subjective to your budget. I only use Fishing rods and reels that feel right to me for the presentation it’s being used for. To me it’s a system working together that includes the line and lures being used. All my rods today are light weight under 4 oz and balance with the reels mounted on them. As long as I am in contact with the lure and able to detect strikes, hook set and land the bass it’s good. If paying over $300 for jig & worm baitcasting rod it will be a custom build to my specs. Modifying by shorting the lower lip of the original Pop-R goes back over 25 years before the Japanese improved the spitting design. Unless you want to modify a Pop-R it’s easy to purchase spitting poppers with slimmed down sides today. Filing a notch in the line tie eye is asking for trouble. Use San Diego jam knot and clinch down tight until you hear the knot click. Must bass anglers don’t retrieve poppers fast enough to get the spitting action, like a surface jerk retrieve. Tom

I use Owner Down Shot bell shape weights in 1/8, 3/16 & 1/4 oz sizes. It sits on the bottom without rolling like other shapes tend to do, line clip and swivel works good. About $3.50 for 10 each. Simply tie a over hand knot on line end, Slip the line into the clip. If you get snagged pull or shake the weight the free, the over hand knot prevents the line pulling out easily but breaks the line at the knot before breaking at the hook. Tom

You can’t damage the reel by pulling hard using your rod unless you point the rod tip at the at a snag taking the rod out of the force being applied. Very few bass rods can lift more then 8 lbs of weight/force without breaking. 8 lbs of pulling force isn’t going to bend the spool shaft or damage the end plates or bearings. I think you met Butch Brown not Butch Jones. We had anglers like Gary Harrison, Danny Kadoda, Gary Sampson, Bill Seimantel, Bob Crupi, all trying to catch the world record LMB at Castiac during the 90’s. Castiac is only a 2,000 acre small, but very deep, lake located a few miles off the I5 freeway. It’s hard to imagine the circus this time period was. People set up 200 power spotting scopes to watch anglers fishing. The last thing I wanted was notoriety, my thought was the whale the surfaces gets harpooned! So, no I stayed under the radar as much as possible. Tom
